Ware always-compelling Vision Festival, its 15th edition expanded this year to 11 days 7 by Martin Longley at 7 venues, including the groups of saxophonist David S. Ware (Artist Profile), drummer Muhammad Ali (Encore) and roster members of Kadima Collective On The Cover: Herbie Hancock (Label Spotlight). And based on the success of the WinterJazz Fest, a warmer 9 by Andrey Henkin edition, eerily titled the Undead Jazz Festival, invades the West Village for two days with dozens of bands June. -

DAVID LYTTLE “SOPHISTICATED AND SHARP... ONE OF THE BEST, ROBUST LISTENING EXPERIENCES.” - ROLLING STONE David Lyttle is a MOBO-nominated Irish musician, recording artist, songwriter, jazz drummer, producer and record label owner! Lyttle was born and lives in Northern Ireland. Music is truly a family affair, Lyttle began performing as a member of the Lyttle Family band from the age of four, playing folk and classical music until his teens. Lyttle honed his musical skills across drums, percussion, cello, keyboards, bass and vocals. At age 14 Lyttle kick-started his DJ career on the Northern Irish club circuit. Aged 19 he became a solo artist, it was also at this age he discovered the great jazz artists, who would become his greatest influence. This was a pre-YouTube time so, people really had to make an effort to discover music genres and artists. Lyttle cites his genre influences as jazz, hip hop, soul, classical, pop and folk and music artists as, Art Blakey, Q-Tip and Dr John who he appreciates for their strong vibes. to launch in 2017. “ART BLAKEY HAS MOST INFLUENCED MY JAZZ DRUMMING. SLIGO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 24-29 July sligojazz.ie Tickets 071 9161518 Sligo Jazz Project’s annual event is one of Europe’s most unique festivals, built around Europe’s premier jazz summer school. This year Sligo Jazz Project has 26 tutors and attracts over 120 participants annually. This fabulous bunch of avid music lovers forms our core audience and makes for an atmosphere like no other festival. As a consequence, the empathy that builds throughout this week is quite extraordinary. Participants attend workshops each day, perform together in ensembles, a wonderful facet of this week, when it spills over into our twice daily jam sessions, which feature participants and tutors alike. But hang on, to use the term “tutors” is a massive understatement. We really need to elucidate about the musicians that spend the week teaching and performing at Sligo Jazz each year. Our 2018 faculty features musicians who have performed with Steely Dan, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Hans Zimmer, Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Stevie Winwood, Dhafer Youssef, Joe Lovano, the WDR Big Band, Kurt Elling, Maroon 5, Dirty Loops, Westlife, Annie Lennox, James Morrison, Van Morrison, Mose Allison and Nina Simone. We’ve had Grammy winners and Golden Globe nominees. These are not mere educators but consummate composers, arrangers and performers spanning a range of idioms. In Sligo you get the opportunity to learn from the masters. It is these amazing musicians who will perform for you this week, in ever so unpredictable a number of combinations. Catch them jamming with participants and playing concerts, only five of which are pay-in events. -

Over the last one hundred years, jazz performance in Dublin has represented contrasting values for different people. What has remained consistent is the notion of participation within a network of musicians, audience members, promotors and institutions that make up a scene. To participate in a scene is to be actively involved in contestation and negotiation as individuals and groups seek to create meaning and identity through jazz performance. -

Jazzwise, Feb 2016 Tom Harrison"s Ellington Project aims to explore the music of the genius jazz legend Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator Billy Strayhorn. Following a year of intensive study of Ellington" music, Harrison embarked upon a UK tour in February 2016 to perform, develop and record the project. Harrison was interviewed by Jazzwise ahead of the tour, which can be read here. The tour was generously sponsored by Arts Council England, with all 8 dates selling out thanks to national and regional exposure in the press, including extended coverage on BBC television and Time Out London. Five gigs of the tour, including the project launch at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean St were recorded live, with a view to producing and releasing an album of the performances later in 2016. SLIGO JAZZ www.sligojazz.ie 24-29 July 2012 International Festival of Jazz and World Music WELCOME Sligo Jazz Project (SJP) was formed in 2005 by Sligo based musicians, with the aim of creating world-class education and performance events for musicians and music lovers. In a comparatively short space of time we have achieved this and created a unique annual event, described by the Irish Times last year as “one of the most important events in the jazz calendar”. SJP’s importance to Sligo’s cultural tourism is growing each year, and in 2011 surpassed many other local events in terms of foreign visitors. At the time of press, we have received summer school bookings from ten countries and expect that to grow as it has done since 2006. SJP’s week-long main event features a world-renowned summer school faculty that inspires and educates, combined with a full blown international jazz and world music festival. 2012 sees arguably the greatest line-up we have ever assembled, both summer school and festival brimming over with a rich and varied cocktail of world music and jazz events. We are particularly delighted to see the return of some of the greatest jazz musicians in SJP history: Rufus Reid, John Riley and John Taylor may not be household names but have been very much at the forefront of the modern jazz scene since the 1970’s and have performed with a who’s who of jazz greats. SJP Guest of Honour this year is a renowned jazz legend: a modern jazz innovator for several decades, composer and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler is still touring in his eighties. -
