Arctostaphylos uva-ursi. Also known as Kinnikinnick. A low growing native shrub. It is from the family ericaceae and is evergreen. Thick leathery leaves are light green in spring, deep green in summer and reddish purple in fall. It has showy flowers and fruits. Flowers are pink or white, bell-shaped and in clusters. Bright red berries last into/through winter. This shrub gets 6-12 inches tall and can spread 3 to 6 feet. Grows best in sandy and well drained soils in full sun. Does well on rocky and gravelly sites, makes a lovely groundcover along rock wall, edge of woods. Does not grow well south of USDA Zone 7. When planting do not compact soil too tightly and do not fertilize. This native plant habitat is circumpolar, being found in northern parts of North America, higher elevations along the Rocky and Appalacian mountians, northern Europe and Asia.
