This review seeks to examine what role, if any, the marketing of menthol cigarettes plays in the formation of consumer perceptions of menthol cigarettes. The available literature suggests that menthol cigarettes may be perceived as safer choices than non-menthol cigarettes. Furthermore, there is significant overlap between menthol cigarette advertising campaigns and the perceptions of these products held by consumers. The marketing of menthol cigarettes has been higher in publications and venues whose target audiences are Blacks/African Americans. Finally, there appears to have been changes in cigarette menthol content over the past decade, which has been viewed by some researchers as an effort to attract different types of smokers. Kindscher, Sahnish (Arikara) Ethnobotany This book describes the traditional use of wild plants among the Arikara (Sahnish) for food, medicine, craft, and other uses. The Arikara grew corn, hunted and foraged, and traded with other tribes in the northern Great Plains. Their villages were located along the Sahnish (Arikara) Missouri River in northern South Dakota and North Dakota. Today, many of them live at Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota, as part of the MHA (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara) Ethnobotany Nation. We document the use of 106 species from 31 plant families, based primarily on the work of Melvin Gilmore, who recorded Arikara ethnobotany from 1916 to 1935. Gilmore interviewed elders for their stories and accounts of traditional plant use, collected material goods, and wrote a draft manuscript, but was not able to complete it due to debilitating illness. Fortunately, his field notes, manuscripts, and papers were archived and form the core of the present volume. Gilmore’s detailed description is augmented here with historical accounts of the Arikara gleaned from the journals of Great Plains explorers—Lewis and Clark, John Bradbury, Pierre Tabeau, and others. Additional plant uses and nomenclature is based on the field notes of linguist Douglas R. Parks, who carried out detailed documentation of the Sahnish (Arikara) Ethnobotany tribe’s language from 1970–2001. Although based on these historical sources, the present volume features updated modern botanical nomenclature, contemporary spelling and interpretation of Arikara plant names, and color photographs and range maps of each species.

Bearberry favours dry or gravelly soil and can be locally abundant on the drier moorland characteristic of the eastern and central Highlands. Netted Mountain Moth This habitat is often referred to as “Arctostaphylos heath”. If Arctostaphylos heath is not burnt, then bearberry can become scarce as heather slowly dominates. In the absence of controlled burning, bearberry can maintain its presence on disturbed ground, especially steep slopes, track and verge sides or in more exposed conditions usually at higher altitudes under natural erosion. However, it is thought that the Netted Mountain Moth does not favour these more exposed sites. Some Netted Mountain Moth sites have been lost due to afforestation, whilst over-grazing by sheep and/or deer, and both uncontrolled and a cessation of burning can also be detrimental. Good muirburn practice that creates a patchwork of small burns on a 7-10 year cycle is beneficial, and on some sites essential. We report on (1) the historical context of tobacco use among Ojibwe Indians; (2) risk factors that facilitate use: peer/parental smoking, acceptability/ availability of cigarettes; (3) cessation efforts/ inhibiting factors for cessation: smoking while pregnant, smoking to reduce stress , beliefs that cessation leads to debilitating withdrawals; and (4) protective factors that inhibit smoking initiation/ use: negative health effects of smoking, parental and familial smoking behaviors, encouragement from youth to quit smoking, positive health benefits, “cold turkey” quitting, prohibition of smoking in tribal buildings/homes. Smoking is prevalent, but protective behaviors are evident and can assist in designing culturally sensitive prevention, intervention and cessation programs. Commonly known as the Arkona Cluster, these sites date to between A.D. 1000 and 1280 during the early Late Woodland Period and are thought to be part of a borderland region between distinct cultural groups known as the Western Basin Younge Phase and the Early Ontario Iroquoians. Using a combination of distribution and attribute data from each site’s pipe assemblage, I explore how the similarities and differences observed can be used to draw insights into the potential relations between the sites and how they relate to a larger regional context of identity formation, territorialization and intergroup interaction and exchange.

Another common name for the plant is airplane plant. The scientific name is Chlorophytum comosum. The spider plant is native to coastal areas of South Africa. The spider plant is a monocot meaning it has parallel leaf venation and is in the lily family. The spider plant is a clump-forming perennial. The leaves are long and narrow with a fairly prominent mid- rib. The leaves are somewhat folded or in a v-shaped pattern, especially at the base of the plant. Flower stems are stiff, wiry, and long. At the end of the flower stem plantlets begin to form. Flowers are white having three petals and three sepals. The flower is 0.25 to 0.75 inch in diameter. Spider plants have thick fleshy roots that store food reserves, making the plant perennial. There are four common varieties or cultivars of the spider plant. The native plant has a solid green leaf color with a lighter green color in the center of the leaf. The ‘Mandaianum’ variety is a dwarf spider plant with 4-6 inch dark green leaves with a bright yellow stripe.
