The greatest challenge in the nuclear age is developing and maintaining a global perspective which fosters international cooperation. While the modern world is comprised of politically independent states, people must transcend nationalism and recognize the significant interdependence among peoples of the world. The exposure of students to different cultural systems provides the background of thought necessary to developing a global perspective. Cultural learning is present in many disciplines. Exposure to perspectives on art, business, engineering, music, and the natural and social sciences that lead to an understanding of the contemporary world supports the view that intercultural interaction has become a daily necessity. The complexity of American society forces people to balance regional and national goals with global concerns. Many of the most serious problems are world issues and require solutions which exhibit mutuality and reciprocity. No longer are hunger, ecology, health care delivery, language planning, information exchanges, economic and social developments, law, technology transfer, philosophy, and the arts solely national concerns; they affect all the people of the world. Survival may be dependent on the ability to generate global solutions to some of the most pressing problems. The word university, from universitas, implies that knowledge comes from many sources and is not restricted to local, regional, or national perspectives. The Global Awareness Area recognizes the need for an understanding of the values, elements, and social processes of cultures other than the culture of the United States. Learning which recognizes the nature of others cultures and the relationship of America’s cultural system to generic human goals and welfare will help create the multicultural and global perspective necessary for effective interaction in the human community. Courses which meet the requirement in global awareness are of one or more of the following types: (1) in- depth area studies which are concerned with an examination of culture-specific elements of a region of the world, country, or culture group, (2) the study of contemporary non-English language courses that have a significant cultural component, (3) comparative cultural studies with an emphasis on non-U.S. areas, and (4) in-depth studies of non-U.S. centered cultural interrelationships of global scope such as the global interdependence produced by problems of world ecology, multinational corporations, migration, and the threat of nuclear war. • Dave Gahan “Angels & Ghosts”: in Italia, Unica

  • Toward Innumerable Futures: the Offering of Frank Stanford’S Poetry,” Published in a Raccoon Monograph, Monograph Two (The Frank Stanford Monograph), in April 1981
T O W A R D I NNUMERABLE F UTURES : FRANK STANFORD & ORIGINS A. P. WALTON MASTER’S THESIS ◆ LIVR07 SPRING 2015 Paul Tenngart ◆ Supervisor Literature - Culture - Media, English Literature The Centre for Languages and Literature A NOTE ON THE TITLE he principal title of this thesis alludes to Frank Stanford’s poem “Time Forks Perpetually T Toward Innumerable Futures In One of Them I Am Your Enemy,” the final poem in Constant Stranger (Mill Mountain Press, 1976), his sixth book; his title’s phrasing is taken from “El jardín de senderos que se bifurcan” (“The Garden of Forking Paths”)—the title story in Jorge Luis Borges’s first collection of short stories (Sur, 1941)—verbatim (sans the intersentential period) as translated from the Spanish by Donald A. Yates and first published in the Michigan Alumnus Quarterly Review on May 24, 1958, then later collected in Labyrinths: Selected Stories & Other Writings (New Directions, 1964). (Translation revisions were numerous and varied from periodical to book, but the aforementioned line remained intact.) My specific use of “Toward Innumerable Futures” pays pointed homage to an essay that ranks among the more impassioned and perspicacious of precedent Stanford criticism, Pamela Stewart’s “Toward Innumerable Futures: The Offering of Frank Stanford’s Poetry,” published in A Raccoon Monograph, Monograph Two (the Frank Stanford monograph), in April 1981. A. P. WALTON | i ABSTRACT his thesis is a combined critical, biographical, and bibliographical study of American poet T Frank Stanford (1948-1978). A prodigious, prolific poet’s poet, Stanford is a long- underappreciated artist whose unwavering legacy, in recent years, has grown to be an undeniable force in contemporary American poetry.

BIOGRAPHY AS A SEARCHLIGHT: FINDING THE FRANK STANFORD STORY CYCLE IN ELLEN GILCHRIST’S FICTION by ALYSON WARD Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON December 2010 Copyright © by Alyson Ward 2010 All Rights Reserved ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Dr. Desiree Henderson for agreeing to direct the thesis of a complete stranger – and for pushing me to find my argument. I also thank my committee members, Dr. Neill Matheson and Dr. Cedrick May, for early feedback and helpful suggestions. I offer thanks to Dr. Linda K. Walker-Kennedy and to the late Professor Ann Miller at Baylor University, who made me want a lifetime of poetry and passionate study. Above all, I thank my parents, Ann and Gene Ward. Without their encouragement and help – throughout my life and especially in the past year – this thesis would never have amounted to more than a pile of notes and a vaguely interesting idea. November 15, 2010 iii ABSTRACT BIOGRAPHY AS A SEARCHLIGHT: FINDING THE FRANK STANFORD STORY CYCLE IN ELLEN GILCHRIST’S FICTION Alyson Ward, M.A. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2010 Supervising Professor: Desiree Henderson Ellen Gilchrist’s short stories and novels form several story cycles that connect her characters and tie her work together into interdependent story groups. Her work is also strikingly autobiographical, featuring protagonists who resemble her in obvious ways. Though critics have identified many of Gilchrist’s story cycles, one important cycle has been all but ignored: a young poet appears in a number of her stories, and for several of Gilchrist’s protagonists, he serves as a catalyst for needed change.
