PERSPECTIVES ON TERRORISM Volume 11, Issue 6 Articles Al-Qaida and the Pakistani Harakat Movement: Reflections and Questions about the pre-2001 Period by Don Rassler Abstract There has been a modest amount of progress made over the last two decades in piecing together the developments that led to creation of al-Qaida and how the group has evolved over the last 30 years. Yet, there are still many dimensions of al-Qaida that remain understudied, and likely as a result, poorly understood. One major gap are the dynamics and relationships that have underpinned al-Qaida’s multi-decade presence in Pakistan. The lack of developed and foundational work done on the al-Qaida-Pakistan linkage is quite surprising given how long al- Qaida has been active in the country, the mix of geographic areas - from Pakistan’s tribal areas to its main cities - in which it has operated and found shelter, and the key roles Pakistani al-Qaida operatives have played in the group over the last two decades. To push the ball forward and advance understanding of this critical issue, this article examines what is known, and has been suggested, about al-Qaida’s relations with a cluster of Deobandi militant groups consisting of Harakat ul-Mujahidin, Harakat ul-Jihad Islami, Harakat ul-Ansar, and Jaish-e-Muhammad, which have been collectively described as Pakistan’s Harakat movement, prior to 9/11. It finds that each of these groups and their leaders provided key elements of support to al-Qaida in a number of direct and indirect ways. -

Harvard Middle Eastern and Islamic Review 8 (2009), 176–199 Transnational and Cosmopolitan Forms of Islam in the West Karen Leonard Transnational forms of religions—in this case, Islam—are not new. As Richard Eaton and many others have written, Islam and Muslims have long constituted a “world system.”1 Muslims were, in interactions and aspirations, moving across linguistic and political borders long before there were modern nation-states.2 Even though current deªnitions of transnationalism rest on the existence of nation-states, modern nations actually work against transnationalism by producing tensions that chal- lenge and weaken efforts to establish and maintain transnational con- nections. In this article, I argue that transnational forms of Islam are inevita- bly engaged in losing struggles, particularly in North America and Eu- rope.3 Although only a few years ago, such writings were rare, some scholars of Islam in Europe are beginning to write about European Is- lam or Euro-Islam, about Swedish or Norwegian Islam, and about Euro- Muslims, Swedish Muslims, and so on.4 In North America, Muslims and scholars who previously resisted the phrase American Islam are now accepting it and imbuing it with meanings beyond a simple politi- cal claim on the United States or Canada. American forms of Islam can be discerned as the forms of Islam in the West become strongly cosmo- politan rather than transnational. In examining transnational and cosmopolitan Islamic movements in the West, much depends on the deªnitions employed. I am using spe- ciªc deªnitions of transnationalism and cosmopolitanism rather than the broad deªnitions that were presented in works published in the 1990s on primarily economic migrants (people moving from their homelands to other societies and linking two or more societies).5 Steven Vertovec employs a similarly broad deªnition in an essay on diaspora, transnationalism. -

Most of the Muslim inhabitants of Southeast Asia support the secular state and eschew the violence and literal interpretations of Islam that have plagued their South Asian and Middle Eastern co-religionists. Only a small minority advocates the establishment of Islamic regimes gov- erned by sharia, law based on the Quran. There have always been Muslim militants in the region, but the conventional wisdom holds that these mili- tants were focused on their own domestic agenda. As one of the most noted U.S. scholars on Southeast Asian security wrote: “Southeast Asian terrorist groups are essentially home grown and not part of an international terrorist network, although individual members may have trained with Al-Qaida in Afghanistan.”1 That analysis is naïve and underestimates the degree to which radical Islamists in Southeast Asia have linked up with transnational terrorist organizations like Al-Qaida. Academics and policymakers have been loath to come to terms with the growing threat of radical Islamicism in Southeast Asia. The devastating attack on a Balinese nightclub on October 12, 2002, in which some 202 people (mainly Australian tourists) were killed, was a wake-up call to governments in denial and skeptics in the region. -

Credibility of Halal Logo Design among Consumers Nurul Wahidah Mahmud Zuhudi & Jasni Dolah Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia Email of corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract The credibility of halal logo certified by JAKIM must perform as a vital indicator in providing consumers with trustworthy components during product consumption. The recognition of halal logo will also be helping in raising potential brand awareness to avoid conflict and confusions to consumers. Previous research has indicated some point of view on the use of multiple patterns on crescent and moon applied for halal logo (Brill, Leiden, 1960), which is inconsistent to shows strong significance to consumers. The appropriateness aspect of putting correct symbols or shape for halal logo is particularly subjective, and yet has not been widely discussed. The objective of study is, i) to examine factors influencing consumers to recognize and perceive halal logo, and ii) to suggest appropriate visual recognition to enhance better understanding. Using self-administrative questionnaire as a method of gaining a result, this study has been conducted among consumers. The findings may reveal some recommendation in improving previous halal logo to grab a sense of required recognition and raise brand awareness, which significantly essential in spreading wider knowledge for halal industry. Hence, religion is a system of beliefs and practices by which of people interprets and responds to what they feel is supernatural and sacred (Johnstone, 1975). -
