Dr. Arsen Manukyan to Discuss ‘Business Environment in Armenia’ at NAASR Talk

BELMONT, Mass. — Visiting expert Arsen Manukyan will give a talk titled “The Business Environment in Armenia: Legal and Practical Issues for Investors,” on Monday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m., at the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) Center, 395 Concord Ave. The lecture is presented as part of the NAASR/Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Series on Contemporary Armenian Issues and is jointly sponsored by Armenian Business Network. This presentation will outline some of the main challenges, from legal and practical per- spectives, that Armenia is facing as well as some of the positive developments in the last sev- eral years. The Armenian government has made efforts to improve the business environment in order to attract foreign and domestic investors. Despite the steps and initiatives under- taken by the government, the results have not been satisfactory and there is a need to increase efforts to ensure a more favorable business climate. Dr. Arsen Manukyan has over 20 years of experience in the public sector, government, and leading programs for economic and social development in Armenia. He specializes in conduct- ing legal analysis, development of legal opinions, and the drafting of laws and regulations. His professional career includes work in the Parliament (National Assembly) of Armenia (Senior Specialist of Juridical Department); Armenia Human Rights Defender’s Office (Head of division on protection of social and economic rights) and the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (Head of Legal Department). BELMONT, Mass. — Translator and scholar Jennifer Manoukian will give a talk on the French Armenian author Zareh Vorpouni (1902-1980) on Thursday, May 25, at 7:30 p.m., at the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) Center, 395 Concord Ave., Belmont. The lecture, titled “A Literary Renegade: Zareh Vorpouni and 20th- Century Western Armenian Literature in France,” is presented as part of the NAASR / Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Series on Contemporary Armenian Issues and is jointly sponsored by Armenian International Women’s Association (AIWA). In the 1920s and 1930s, a group of young writ- ers turned Paris into the epicenter of Western Armenian literary life. These writers deliberately broke with their Ottoman Armenian predeces- sors in theme and form, staging an outright rebellion against them. Their invention of new lit- erary standards and their impulse to represent the new realities of the diaspora challenged the conservatism of the Armenian community and created a fleeting period in which questioning nationalism, clericalism and sexuality became the norm in literature. In Armenia and Karabagh Manoukian’s presentation will focus on the life and work of one of the least known, yet most prolific, of these writers: Zareh Vorpouni, focusing on his 1967 novel The Candidate, recently translated into English for the first time.
