That’s why the Little Theatre is an official Club Pass venue for the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. We’ll be hosting 18 concerts in Theatre 1 and will have free music in The Little JUne’s MEMBERCARD PLUS BENEFIT Café throughout the festival. Meanwhile, if you want to enjoy air-conditioned entertainment, we will still have four theaters screening the best independent SENECA PARK ZOO films in Rochester. WXXI’s booth will be stationed at the hub of the Festival site at the corner of Main Street and Jazz Street, where you can pick up information on what’s planned nightly at The Little. Our TV crews will also be on site recording the newest season of our national Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival series at Kilbourn Hall, as well as shooting the sights and sounds throughout the streets and venues. Our news team will be reporting live from the Festival (you can hear those reports on AM 1370 and WRUR-FM). Finally, if you get home from the Festival and want more jazz — tune in to WXXI-TV at midnight for rebroadcasts of classic episodes of our Jazz Festival series. The programs are marked in the TV grid of this magazine. I hope to see you on Jazz Street during the Festival – at Kilbourn Hall for a concert, or at The Little for music and movies – because no matter where you go during those nine days in June, WXXI will be there! 2222 Saint Paul Street Rochester, NY Best regards, (585) 336-7200 senecaparkzoo.org Valid for 2-for-1 admission during the month Norm Silverstein Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Primitive Pursuits, located in Ithaca, offers a variety of nature-based educational programs. Outdoor activities range from birding to winter survival skills. Co-director Tim Drake explains more about the organization founded in 2000: Q. How would you describe Primitive Pursuits? A. Primitive Pursuits on the surface is a nature connection program. Dig a little deeper NTS and you see it’s also a personal development program. Digging even deeper, you find a foundation for cultural healing. Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Primitive Pursuits? A. Primitive Pursuits, though rooted firmly in youth development, has grown to offer a wide variety of adult programs. We were all kids once! Q. What types of camps and programs are available at Primitive Pursuits? A. Adult programs range from stand-alone weekend workshops heavy in the primitive skills to 200- EVE plus Wilderness Skills Instructor Certification Courses. Youth programs include summer camps and school break programs, home school and afterschool programs, leadership classes, and more. Q. Which of your programs offers the most unique experience or has gained the & greatest response? A. Of late our year-round Forest Preschool program. Although there are relatively few like it in the United States, it is very common in several northern European countries. S Q. Primitive Pursuits provides an opportunity to reconnect with nature. Do you feel that former students find a way to incorporate what they learn in their typical technology and social media-focused lives? A. Thankfully yes! We have been around for 15 years now, and we often hear back from alumni. For some the program has set a solid foundation for prioritizing time spent outside. Also, there is awareness that with such a practice there is a certain peace of mind that can’t be found anywhere else. For others the program has influenced their career paths and course of studies EW at university levels. At Ithaca College where we teach, we have had several former Primitive Pursuits alumni return as college students and then begin their careers with us. www.primitivepursuits.com N CO-DIRECTOR TIM DRAKE To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email [email protected] CAMPAIGN UPDATE Thanks to the generous support of good friends like you, we are approaching the $15 million mark on the Go Public Campaign for the future of WXXI and The Little Theatre. The main intent is to aid instructors in their own lesson preparation, so most of the language and information is geared towards the adult, and not the student. It is not expected that all the information given will be used or that all activities are applicable to all settings. Teachers and/or parents can choose the elements that best meet the specific needs of their individual situations. Our hope is that the information will be useful, spark ideas, and make connections. The series follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, and redefined, as well, the role of the United States within the wider world. Although it is difficult to trace the origin of the French horn, it is generally accepted that it was developed in France during the 17th century • An outgrowth of the early primitive and the later sophisticated hunting horn, its value in the use of Fanfares was acclaimed during the reign of Louis XIII • It was also discovered that strange and wonderful musical effects could be had by inserting the hand in the bell • One of the first orchestral uses came in 1717 when Handel included the French horn in his score of the ''Water Music" • The modern instrument embodies a main tube measuring approximately 7 feet 4 inches in length, coiled in circles and finally expanding into a widely flared bell • As the French horn lends its importance to the value of the modern symphony orchestra, so too does the trained and reliable insurance office develop a modern and sensible insurance program for business and personal accounts • We would welcome an opportunity to analyze your need for complete protection.
