WXXI-TV/HD | WORLD | CREATE | AM1370 | CLASSICAL 91.5 | WRUR 88.5 | THE LITTLE PROGRAMPUBLIC TELEVISION & PUBLIC RADIO FOR ROCHESTER LISTINGSSEPTEMBER 2014 Ken Burns’s seven-part documentary weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. The series follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, and redefined, as well, the role of the United States within the wider world. Parker, station relations and web coordinator for WXXI Public Broadcasting in Rochester, New York, died July 12 after a courageous battle against ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). She was 43. Parker joined WXXI in June 1996 as a TV operations technician and quickly moved up the ranks to segment producer for several WXXI series including Need to Know, Assignment: The World, and 60 Second Science. She also served as associate producer on WXXI’s Crucible of Freedom, a companion piece to the national documentary Not For Ourselves Alone by Ken Burns that aired statewide. In June 2002 Parker was promoted to stations relations and web coordinator. She served as station liaison for Homework Hotline, WXXI’s statewide live call-in show where kids get help with homework problems right on the air. As web coordinator she provided daily maintenance of WXXI’s website, managed content for various WXXI eNewsletters, and used various platforms of social media to reach potential members. She was affectionately known as the “social media maven.” Parker was diagnosed with ALS in April 2010. When the disease progressed, she began working from home and remained vital to WXXI and her department until the day she died. She also helped to raise thousands of dollars for the Greater Rochester Muscular Dystrophy Association and The ALS Association Upstate Chapter. In December 2013 Parker submitted a personal video piece to Art for Freedom, part of Ray of Light Foundation. It was chosen by Madonna and celebrity curator, David Blaine, and Parker was awarded a $10,000 grant for her submission. She donated the money to MDA Rochester and the ALS Association. “Although we are deeply saddened by her passing, we will remember Joy for her love of life and family, for her passion for her work, and for the example she set in fighting this devastating disease,” said Norm Silverstein, President of WXXI. Parker was also a photographer and artist for more than 30 years. Her photography has been exhibited at several galleries and festivals throughout upstate New York. An avid blogger, she maintained her own website simplejoysonline.net where she shared her photography and her personal story living with ALS. Parker is survived by her husband Mike Champlin and daughters Katherine (18) and Nicole (9).
