    R. Feener A re-examination of the place of al-Hallaj in the development of Southeast Asian Islam In: Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde 154 (1998), no: 4, Leiden, 571-592 This PDF-file was downloaded from http://www.kitlv-journals.nl Downloaded from Brill.com09/30/2021 12:59:33AM via free access R. MICHAEL FEENER A Re-Examination of the Place of al-Hallaj in the Development of Southeast Asian Islam For decades, the academic study of Islam in Southeast Asia has been domin- ated by a preoccupation with the role of mysticism in the region. From the earliest descriptions in Raffles' History of Java of 1817 to the anthropological writings of Clifford Geertz (Geertz I960, 1968), the mystical orientation of Southeast Asian Islam has been assumed a priori. Such an orientation has dominated the contents of several Leiden dissertations, and eventually led to Professor Johns' thesis concerning the role of Sufi turuq in the Islamization of the region.1 While there is no denying that some schools of Islamic mystic thought have been influential in the development of Islamic civilization in Southeast Asia, it seems inadvisable to continue taking the 'mystical' nature of Islam in the region as a given. Rather, we should refrain from letting the nebulous term 'Sufism' bias us in our investigations of the actual situation in both its historical and contemporary contexts. It was just such a predisposition to find the 'mystical' in Southeast Asian Islam that was evident in the Dutch publications cited by Massignon in his Passion.2 Going by indications in this handful of studies, Massignon came to imagine a much more prominent role of 'Sufism', and of Hallajian elements therein, than it may have actually played.

  • Reinventing Tradition: New Dance in Indonesia 1 by Sal Murgiyanto
Reinventing Tradition: New Dance in Indonesia 1 by Sal Murgiyanto Introduction I would like to begin this lecture by expressing my sincerest respect and deepest sorrow for the thousands of people who died as victims of the dreadful earthquake and deadly tsunami in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Aceh, Indonesia. Still, in the midst of the disturbing pictures and reports published in newspapers, and eerie scenes broadcast on television in December 2004, miracles were also told. A two month-old baby girl was sucked into an undertow and thrown back by a tidal wave alive into her mother’s lap. Early in the morning after Christmas, a ten-year-old girl sat beside her father enjoying the beauty of Phuket’s beach in Thailand. Upon seeing the water on the beach receding drastically and, from afar, white tidal waves surging one after the other, Kelly told her dad, “A tsunami is coming in twenty or thirty minutes and there will be disaster!” She had learned this fact in a class prior to her vacation. The wise father told the story to a coastguard who ordered everybody to leave the beach immediately and head back to the hotel. This speedy action saved more than 400 human lives; thirty minutes after the announcement the tsunami destroyed everything standing on the beach. Saving the lives of many, Kelly was called the “Angel of [the] Beach.” 2 There is still one more miracle to relate. Forty kilometers from the epicenter of the December 2004 earthquake sits Simeulue, a small island in the Indian Ocean 150 kilometers off the west coast of the province of Aceh, on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.

  • The Application of Maslahah Mursalah in a Mediation Process Between Disputant Parties
Journal of Islamic Economic Laws Vol. 3, No. 1 January 2020: 1-14 The Application of Maslahah Mursalah in A Mediation Process Between Disputant Parties Andika Catur Prastyo Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Surakarta email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to explore how is the mediation process in the Sragen District Court in Sharia economic disputes. It also seeks to determine the suitability of the mediation process in terms of the Maslahah Mursalah. This research is a field research with a qualitative approach. The data source of this study consists of primary data and secondary data. The location of this study is in Sragen District Court. Data collection techniques in this study were using documentation and interviews. This study shows that the mediation process in Islamic economic disputes is not much different from other disputes. This research also reveals that there is a non-compliance with the existing regulations, i.e that peace which is carried out by the parties occurs outside the court and there is no Peace Act. Based on this, it will lead to a different legal effect. Keywords: Mediation Process, Maslahah Mursalah, Sharia Economic Disputes INTRODUCTION It cannot be denied that Islam is a living guidelines. As a guidelines, the teachings of Islam consist of the rules encompassing every aspect of human life. Generally, the rules can be divided into three parts namely Aqida (creeds), Akhlaq (ethics) and Sharia (law). The first two parts, Aqidah and Akhlaq are constant, while Sharia always changes according to the development of human needs and life.

CONTEXTUALIZING ‘CONTEMPORARY ART’: PROPOSITIONS OF CRITICAL ARTISTIC PRACTICE IN SENI RUPA KONTEMPORER IN INDONESIA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Amanda Katherine Rath January 2011 © 2011 Amanda Katherine Rath CONTEXTUALIZING ‘CONTEMPORARY ART’: PROPOSITIONS OF CRITICAL ARTISTIC PRACTICE IN SENI RUPA KONTEMPORER IN INDONESIA, 1973-1994 Amanda Katherine Rath, Ph. D. Cornell University 2011 This dissertation contends with the development of seni rupa kontemporer (contemporary art) between 1973 and 1993, with certain case studies extending to the late 1990s. I offer a history and genealogy of concepts of critical artistic practice, examining to what purpose strategies of a contemporary art have been put and from what conditions they emerged. I examine how these have been interpreted to possess criticality in Indonesia. Taking the controversial curatorial essay published for the 9th Jakarta Biennale of Art (1993) as a catalyst rather than as a point of reference, I rethink the possibility and value of a construct of an avant-garde and postmodern in seni rupa kontemporer.I propose a kind of avant-garde without modernism’s tradition of transgressive poetics. The mode of marginality I have in mind is a critical position possible only on this side of the political sea change and depoliticization of the cultural field in Indonesia after 1965. This entails tracing shifting notions of art’s and artistic autonomy, which were largely dependent upon the relation art had with politics and the spheres in which artistic practice was seen to reside.

The relentless damp of the tropics, it argues, suffuses European evocations of the Indies; from drenched forests and malarial clouds to the lush figure of the concubine, the islands of the archipelago have long been made synonymous with natural abundance and tireless sensuality.

  • Introduction National Literature, Regional Perspective
CHAPTER I Introduction National literature, regional perspective Indonesia’s literary world is heterogeneous, but based on language use and form its literature can be broadly divided into two sections: national literature and regional literature. National literature, also known as modern Indonesian literature, is that which is written in the Indonesian language, while regional literature is written in regional languages such as Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese and Buginese. The term ‘regional literature’ is ambiguous, because apart from referring to literature written in regional languages, it is also used somewhat pejoratively to refer to literature in Indonesian that originates at a regional rather than a national level. In this context, the term regional literature is defi ned in ‘a negative way as being of appeal only to restricted audiences’ (Kratz 1991:193). Similarly, the term ‘regional writers’ often has an inferior connotation when comparison is made with ‘writers from the centre’ – a term that refers to writers who live in the capital, Jakarta (formerly Batavia), have been nationally recognized or have written work regarded as part of the Indonesian literary canon. Both regional literature and its writers are considered, in post-colonial terminology, as ‘an inferior Other’ (Newton 1997:283). The study of Indonesian literature continues to concentrate predominantly on its canon, a body of work written by nationally recognized writers and published in Jakarta – the political, economic and cultural centre of Indonesia. Good examples of this are the intensely studied novels of Pramoedya Ananta Toer and more recently those of Seno Gumira Ajidarma and Ayu Utami. Studies that focus on this canon exclude much signifi cant work I Nyoman Darma Putra - 9789004253636 Downloaded from Brill.com09/27/2021 08:06:50PM via free access 2 A literary mirror from outside the capital and reinforce the idea that Jakarta is the centre of all literary activity (Sumardjo 1979 cited in Hellwig 1994:4; Hill 1993:246-7, 253).

  • The New Tradition of Putu Wijaya 105
The N ew Tradition of Putu W ijaya Ellen Rafferty Introduction Putu Wijaya is one of Indonesia's most prominent and prolific authors, contributing numerous novels, short stories, dramas, and film scripts to Indonesian literature.1 He is Balinese by birth and Jakartan by choice having spent the past twenty years there. The marriage of Balinese and Jakartan cultures is reflected in his literary style which is char acterized by a departure from the conventions of realism, an eagerness to borrow from traditional and folk genres,2 * and a black and biting humor. This style draws on elements commonly found in regional genres, such as wayang, arja, ludruk, ketoprak, lenong, and Srimulat * creating artistic forms that are reminiscent of Javanese and Balinese cultures, while remaining rooted in contemporary Jakarta. His language is colloquial, peppered with Jakartanese and Javanese expressions; his syntax is bare, direct, even shockingly abrupt. His themes, often arising out of urban settings, include feelings of alienation, 2Putu Wijaya was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Wisconsin, Madison during the 1985-1986 aca demic year. I am grateful to him and to two anonymous readers for their comments on this essay. 2By "traditional genres" I mean the contemporary cultural expressions of ethnic groups such as Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, etc., not the performance traditions of past eras. Since performance traditions may be learned and performed by anyone of a particular region, the Indonesian term kesenian daerah or "regional arts" is a more appropriate term because it avoids the distinction between ethnic affiliation and regional group identity. The term "folk" characteristically is used to identify cultural performances associated with the lower class.
