Dr. Brian O’Neil Appointed as Medical Center’s Specialist-In-Chief of Emergency Medicine

DETROIT—June 4, 2012— Detroit Medical Center (DMC) has appointed Brian J. O’Neil, M.D., F.A.C.E.P. as Specialist-in-Chief of Emergency Medicine effective May 16, 2012. O’Neil succeeds Suzanne White, M.D., who was named DMC Chief Medical Officer on January 1, 2011.

As Specialist-in-Chief of Emergency Medicine, Dr. O’Neil will oversee and manage emergency medicine services, resident training and operations for all DMC emergency departments.

Nationally recognized as an expert in the fields of cardiac and cerebral ischemia and resuscitation, Dr. O’Neil, a Detroit native, who was actually born at Hutzel Hospital, is currently the Edward S. Thomas Endowed Professor and Interim Chair for the Department of Emergency Medicine at School of Medicine. He is also the Director of Basic Science Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. O’Neil is currently the Chair of the National American Heart Associations’ Advanced Cardiac Life Saving Committee and serves on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation. Dr. O’Neil was a co-author of the prestigious 2010 AHA Acute Coronary Syndromes Guidelines. Dr. O’Neil is also an associate editor for Academic Emergency Medicine and was program director of the American College of Emergency , (ACEP) Scientific Assembly Research Forum. He is a member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine’s Research Committee, ACEP research committee and is a reviewer for , Critical Care Medicine, Chest, Journal of the American College of and the Annals of Emergency Medicine. .

After earning his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. O’Neil completed his emergency medicine residency at DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was also chief resident. Dr. O’Neil also completed a National Institute of Health (NIH) sponsored fellowship in Basic Science Research. Dr. O’Neil has served as the Director of research at Grace Hospital, St. John Hospital and Medical Center and William Beaumont Health System.
