Because of your time here, you now have an opportunity to have a meaningful, fulfilling impact on people’s lives and on society at large that few people can even dream of. You’ve shown, through your flexibility and grace during unprecedented challenges, that you are well equipped to thrive as physicians in an unpredictable world. You’ll certainly benefit from your many hours of study and clinical practice, and from the opportunities you’ve had to engage with the world outside the classroom from our campus in . This gives you a distinct advantage.

Yet, the richest reward of your time here in medical school may be the wisdom and humanistic outlook you’ve gained, which have made you a compassionate and thoughtful , committed to making a difference in your community.

Class of 2021 Commencement and Hooding Ceremony | 17 DEAR CLASS OF 2021:

Congratulations on graduating medical school!

The dedication, sacrifices and resilience you have shown these four years is a testament to the exceptional physicians you will become. Your family and friends should be very proud of your accomplishments.

I remember walking into Jaffar Hall that first day of medical school: bright-eyed, eager and with my trademarked Pikachu backpack in hand. I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed seeing almost 300 students fill every nook and cranny in Jaffar Hall. I never imagined how much we would grow and develop in four short years.

First year was a trial-and-error process in which we began to figure out how to think, discover and learn as future physicians. We began that process in anatomy lab while also building lifelong friendships and memories.

Second year showcased our grit and knowledge as we tackled exam after exam in the process of slaying the granddaddy of all exams: Step 1.

Third year we began to tie in the integration of medical knowledge with the art of caring for a human being. The most rewarding aspect was serving the Detroit community, which has endured financial, educational and political setbacks but continues to fight on and persevere.

Fourth year taught us how to adapt during a pandemic. At the onset, you found creative ways to aid, whether that was making personal protective equipment or running errands for frontline workers. You volunteered to administer COVID-19 tests, and when we were allowed back into the hospitals you fought for the right to care for the sickest COVID-19 patients. This year you demonstrated what makes the Class of 2021 unique in Wayne State University School of Medicine history through your unwavering faith to your patients, your camaraderie with your peer, and your resilience in tackling any obstacle presented to you.

My old football coach recently asked me, given what I know now, if I would do medical school again? My honest answer was that I think medical school is an experience that is best enjoyed once in a lifetime, but if I had the opportunity to go back and do it with you all again, I would do it in a heartbeat.

No matter what you do in life, no matter where you go, it is the people who make or break your experience.

Thank you for making my medical experience a great one, and for showing me what it means to be Warrior Strong.

Yusuf Qadeer Class of 2021 President

18 | Wayne State University School of Medicine OATH OF COMMITMENT CLASS OF 2021

I do solemnly swear by all that I hold most sacred that according to my ability and judgment I will in every particular keep this, my oath and covenant:

I pledge to dedicate myself to the service of humanity and to honor the noble traditions of the medical profession. To hold those who have taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with them. To give to my teachers the respect and gratitude which is their due; to regard my colleagues equally with my brethren; and to teach this art by precept, by lecture, and by every other mode of instruction, to those who practice the healing arts.

As a physician, I will maintain the ultimate dignity of life while guiding its arrival, protecting its course, and easing its natural passage from this world; I will offer to those who seek my aid not only my knowledge and skills, but my warmth and compassion as well; whatever in the lives of those I shall see or hear, either in my practice or outside of my practice, which should not be made public, this will I hold in silence, believing that such things should not be spoken.

I will conduct myself with honesty and virtue; with conscience and dignity will I live my life and practice my art. In all circumstances, I will consider every individual as equal without regard to race, creed, or gender, refusing no one my help. I will abstain from every act of injustice and corruption. Above all else, I will do no harm (Primum Non Nocere).

I freely take this oath and will maintain the noble traditions of my profession, always tempering my science with the warmth and humility of the true physician.
