DETROIT MEDICAL CENTER AND OLYMPIA DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCE PROJECT TO
DEVELOP STATE-OF-THE-ART SPORTS
MEDICINE INSTITUTE ADJACENT TO LITTLE
CAESARS ARENA

Sports medicine facility to provide specialized services for professional, collegiate and amateur athletes as majority tenant for new, $65 million development recently announced as part of Phase 2 of development in The District Detroit

Project brings dozens of new highly-skilled construction, medical and office jobs to The District Detroit Five-story, 127,000-square-foot building to replace current surface parking lot and bring new, Class A office space, street-level retail and sports rehab, medical research and sports simulation services

DETROIT – Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and Olympia Development of Michigan announced today a long-term agreement to build and operate a state of the art sports medicine facility adjacent to the new Little Caesars Arena—adding new professional jobs, medical services and retail opportunities in The District Detroit. Both organizations envision an innovative facility that leverages the expertise of DMC’s specially-trained clinical and rehabilitation teams to provide athletes with immediate access to sportsrelated care.

“The District Detroit continues to catalyze new and exciting opportunities for our community, like this project with the Detroit Medical Center that will bring additional world-class, specialty medical services

to Detroit.” said Christopher Ilitch, President and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc. “It will also increase the job

opportunities, tax base and retail activity on Woodward Avenue and will spur even more growth in the

surrounding area.”

-More-
One of six new projects recently announced by Olympia Development as the launch of Phase 2 of development in the District Detroit, the five-story, 127,000-square-foot facility will occupy land currently used as a surface parking lot at Woodward Avenue and Sproat Street. The development is bringing four floors of Class A office space and 17,000 square feet of street-level retail with construction scheduled to begin next year.

The DMC Sports Medicine Institute will occupy approximately 50,000 square feet of the new facility, and the remaining 60,000 square feet of office space will be available to office or complimentary medical

tenants looking to be a part of the city’s remarkable resurgence and The District Detroit. The facility will

also bring even more vibrancy to the area, which also includes Little Caesars Arena and the soon-toopen Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University.

The project includes investment of more than $65 million and will bring dozens of construction and construction-related jobs, as well as professional medical and office jobs to the area.

DMC has been the official healthcare provider for both the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers for more than 10 years. DMC doctors also offer on-site orthopedic care for players during games at Little Caesars Arena and Comerica Park.

The DMC Sports Medicine Institute will be the first of its kind in Detroit and will include many exciting features only steps from Little Caesars Arena such as a golf simulator, 3-point basketball court and a 40-

yard track. Additionally, there will be high quality specialty rehab services offered such as a mobile MRI and a rehab pool.

“We are excited about what this facility will mean to our community, athletes from near and far, and the teams they represent,” said Dr. Anthony Tedeschi, DMC CEO. “We look forward to offering injury

management and performance improvement services supported by sports science, biomechanics and other innovative therapies. This long-term investment is yet another example of our continued

commitment to Detroit and to further enhancing our outpatient services model.”

Through an exclusive agreement with EXOS, a nationally-recognized sports performance delivery provider, the DMC sports medicine institute will offer tailored health programs that guide athletes to improve in the four pillars of human performance: mindset, nutrition, movement and recovery— services highly sought after by athletes.

Currently, professional athletes from Detroit and players from Michigan’s universities often leave the

state for training, evaluation, performance assessment, injury prevention/improvement, specialized orthopedic therapy and long-term recovery programs. The DMC Sports Medicine Institute will serve a growing demand in southeast Michigan and become a destination site for athletes from across the state and other parts of the Midwest.

The DMC Sports Medicine Institute will be a place where physicians, therapists, trainers, other clinicians and researchers can collaborate to better provide innovative sports medicine services to professional, collegiate, high school and recreational athletes. DMC continues to demonstrate its commitment to the revitalization of Detroit and the new Sports Medicine Institute is yet another example of its promise to further enhance the world-class care it provides to the Detroit community and beyond.

This new sports medicine institute joins more than a dozen other major projects Olympia Development has completed or undertaken since 2015, including Little Caesars Arena; office developments for

2
Google, the Detroit Red Wings, Olympia Entertainment and 313 Presents; four new restaurants; a team store; the Little Caesars world headquarters campus expansion; the Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University; Chevrolet Plaza and other public spaces, infrastructure enhancement and more. Together, the projects set the stage for significant additional retail, office and residential development.

WARNER NORCROSS + JUDD LLP, OLYMPIA DEVELOPMENT OF MICHIGAN,

ANNOUNCE LAW FIRM’S NEW OFFICE ON WOODWARD AVENUE IN THE

DISTRICT DETROIT

Leading law firm office to occupy nearly 30,000 square feet of Class A office space of new five-story building adjacent to Little Caesars Arena

DETROIT – Olympia Development of Michigan and Warner Norcross + Judd LLP announced today that the award-winning law firm will contribute to Detroit’s continuing resurgence by establishing a Class A office location in The District Detroit at 2715 Woodward Ave. Located between Little Caesars Arena and the new Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University, the five-story building offers proximity to Detroit's most important business destinations as well as premier entertainment and cultural attractions.

The Warner Norcross + Judd office will be the sole tenant of the building’s third floor, occupying nearly 30,000 square feet of the 127,000-square-foot, office/medical/retail building. The modern workplace will house about 55 attorneys and staff and will feature conference rooms, collaborative work spaces, dedicated parking and a lounge overlooking Woodward Avenue.

"This agreement represents our commitment to the city of Detroit and our desire to be part of its exciting resurgence," said Linda Paullin-Hebden, executive partner of the firm's Southfield office, one of two in the metropolitan Detroit area. "Whereas other large Michigan law firms have looked to expand outside of the state, Warner has consistently doubled down on Michigan by establishing eight regional offices in key geographies. As a result, Warner will be the only major law firm to have offices in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties."

Paullin-Hebden added that Detroit has fostered a one-of-a-kind, dynamic business climate in the last decade that has made the new location perfect for Warner.

"The District Detroit is an ideal location that promises innovative design and convenience features while also being located close to the action—this is right where our attorneys and our clients want and need

us to be,” she said.

-More-
With 230 attorneys statewide, Warner is one of the largest law firms in Michigan. The firm represents more than 7,000 companies, organizations and individuals based in or doing business in Michigan, including Fortune 500 companies, second-stage growth businesses, entrepreneurial start-ups, nonprofits, individuals and families. The attorneys moving to Detroit practice in dozens of areas and industries, including automotive, media, labor and employment, energy and environment, family law, financial services, health law, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property and real estate.

“Warner Norcross + Judd’s planned expansion is just one example of how The District Detroit is attracting world-class companies and professional services to the city of Detroit,” said Travis Arbogast, vice president of development at Olympia Development of Michigan. “We look forward to their presence in Detroit, along with other companies that are eager to bring jobs and spur economic growth

in our community.”

In addition to Warner’s 30,000 square feet of office space, the Detroit Medical Center will lease part of the building to operate a state-of-the-art Sports Medicine Institute. The building will also offer approximately 17,000 square feet of street-level retail.

James Berkemeier and Sam Munaco of Advocate Commercial acted as Warner Norcross + Judd's real estate advisors. The District Detroit office properties are represented by Mike Carl and Ron Gantner of Plante Moran Cresa. For leasing inquiries please send an email to [email protected].

(Burchfield) Daily Transactions 1 Most likely Detroit Tiger to be traded? Probably J.D. Martinez October 20, 2016 By Anthony Fenech/ Detroit Free Press The Detroit Tigers aren’t in a position to spend more money. General manager Al Avila said as much on Tuesday afternoon, saying with certainty the team would not be a big player in the free agent market. Avila wants the team to get younger. He wants more financial flexibility. And this off-season, he will approach the trade market with a number of high-priced, uber-productive chips, none more likely to get moved – if a move is made – than rightfielder J.D. Martinez. Martinez is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2017 season. He is due $11.75 million. “I don’t foresee any talks of a long-term contract at this point,” Avila said. “In saying that, we’re going to keep an open mind in what possibilities come across this winter, this coming summer. I’m not going to rule out that we wouldn’t consider a long-term deal, but sitting here today, we’re not thinking that way right now.

  • Introduction Making an Adjustment

    Introduction Making an Adjustment

Introduction Making an Adjustment David M.K. Sheinin and Raanan Rein The Jewish American comedian Lenny Bruce famously reflected, “Who can be glad they’re Jewish? You can say…I’ve made a good adjustment, but that’s all.”1 In his 2013 documentary, “When Jews were Funny,” director Alan Zweig is pre- occupied with and anxious about what has changed in recent decades regard- ing Jewish comedy and Jewish comedians in the United States. More specifically, he asks, is there still “Jewish” comedy? No comedians interviewed have the same answer, but Gilbert Gottfried may have come closest to explaining a shift that has occurred over time. While yiddishkeit, Yiddish in-jokes, the Borscht Belt, and the other categorical “Jewish” markers of a comedian’s identity may have slipped away, Jewish comedy continues to function through comedic devices that identify protagonists as Jewish in conjunction with other, overlap- ping identities. Reflecting an ever more complicated set of ethnic and other identities in the Americas, the shift is away from the rigid, and toward a set of constantly reconfiguring identity borders. So according to Gottfried, on the popular television comedy Seinfeld, “every character in it was a Jew, even though they changed their name…. George Costanza and his family were all Jews, but they have an Italian name.”2 Jews have been adjusting their identities for centuries. Sport tells those adjustment stories in the twentieth century where Jewish sport narratives have both reflected and pushed a growing fluidity and complexity of ethnic identity and its boundaries. Jewish sports narratives have tended away from rigid mark- ers toward more complex, multifaceted identity narratives.
