Resources A Guide for Secondary School Educators The Educator’s Guide Created in conjunction with the exhibition, SINGAPO人: Discovering Chinese Singaporean Culture Discovering Chinese Singaporean Culture This exhibition examines how the Chinese community in Singapore developed its own distinctive culture. Here, visitors discover and rediscover what it means to be a Chinese Singaporean. The aim is to develop a stronger sense of the Chinese Singaporean identity amongst youths. This will help foster a greater sense of belonging while giving them an understanding of how we are similar to or different from other Chinese communities. This exhibition presents Chinese Singaporean culture through daily life in Singapore – through the things we see, hear, do and eat every day. Therefore, the experience is highly interactive where visitors can touch various stations, play games, listen to stories and have a dialogue with the gallery. Through this exhibition, we will explore ideas of: Chinese heritage Cultural interactions Public policies The exhibition content extends classroom learning and teaching, by complementing History, Social Studies and Character & Citizenship Education subjects taught in secondary schools. It is also self-guided, where students can learn and explore independently. One of the main interactive features of the exhibition is the use of wristband tags. Students can tap their wristband tags to answer questions scattered throughout the space, trigger videos and play games. At the end of the visit, students can print out their own personalised report card which summarises their exhibition journey along with prompts for further cultural exploration beyond the exhibition. This report card serves as a starting point for them to reflect about their identity in relation to everyday life. -

Chinese zodiac is an original folk culture in China, and it has a profound effect. In vision style, the pure animal totem evolves into a diverse and polymorphic performance style. Nowadays, the design trend that is to be contracted, returns essence. The form of the Chinese zodiac culture is also quietly changing, presenting a new aesthetic style in a contracted form. Introduction Zodiac is a unique folk culture in China, and it originated from the ancestor's natural worship. Compared to nature, people seem tiny or even negligible, so they seek for gods' asylum. The so called "all things have spirit", "beings are all God", in fact are people's beliefs when they personify the animal’s and plants in nature which become the object of worship and awe.[1] Zodiac in the twelve kinds of animals: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig naturally become a symbol of the gods. Chinese Lantern Festival February 21st 2008 The Lantern Festival or Yuanxiao Jie is a traditional Chinese festival, which is on the 15th of the first month of Lunar New Year. The festival marks the end of the celebrations of the Chinese New Year. Chinese started to celebrate the Lantern Festival from the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 221 AD). Like most other Chinese festivals, there is also a story behind the Festival. It is also believed that the festival has Taoist origins. This is a festival for people having fun. On the night of the festival, people go on streets with a variety of lanterns under the full moon, watching lions or dragon dancing, playing Chinese riddles and games, and lighting up firecrackers. There is really a lot of fun for the young and the old. The festival is not well celebrated in the US, though you may find celebrations in some Chinese communities. Yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball) or Tangyuan is the special food for the Lantern Festival. It is believed that Yuanxiao is named after a palace maid, Yuanxiao, of Emperor Wu Di of the Han Dynasty. Yuanxiao is a kind of sweet dumpling, which is made with sticky rice flour filled with sweet stuffing. And the festival is named after the famous dumpling. Yuanxiao is sticky, sweet and round in shape, symbolizing family unity, completeness and happiness. You can find Yuanxiao in oriental food stores. Most of the folk dances of present day China were developed during the Han Dynasty. Dances reflected sacrifices to gods and superstitions of the Chinese culture. Today these dances are still practiced and enjoyed by the people of China to preserve their traditions and culture. The Flower Drum Lantern Dance is one of China’s most represented folk dances of the Han Chinese. This dance is often accompanied by percussion instruments such as cymbals, gongs, and flower drums. The Flower Hua-gu- Drum Lantern Dance contains a combination of fast and slow, and small and large body deng movements. Dancers must jump, spin, and tumble in The Flower partnership with the lively rhythms. Props including fans, handkerchiefs, and umbrellas are often used Drum Lantern during this dance. Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history. -

At the same time it proved to be transparently entertaining to its Cantonese audience. THE RULERS OF SKY AND EARTH THE SYMBOL OF THE DRAGON AND THE TIGER IN CHINESE AND JAPANESE ART Grade Level This lesson is written for grades 9-12; it can be used in a World History or an Art class. Purpose To look at how symbols of power, the dragon and the tiger, are portrayed in the art of China and Japan; students will then compare and contrast this with the Western conception and portrayal of the dragon. Concepts In the Western world, dragons are portrayed as evil, fire-breathing creatures that must be subdued and killed by heroes. The Western dragon is seen as essentially negative, a symbol of evil and a sign of the devil. In Asia, the dragon is a positive force, a symbol of peace and harmony. Chinese and Japanese dragons are considered to be benevolent and auspicious. They breathe water rather than fire and have the power to bring rain, an important attribute in an agricultural society. The Chinese dragon is a supernatural, mythical creature that inhabits the sky and the waters and is connected with clouds, rains, and fertility on one hand and the emperor and his venerated ancestors on the other. For the last 4,000 years, the dragon has intertwined itself into all phases of China's social and political life as well as every form of art and literature. The dragon is the most important symbol of power, and the symbol of the emperor; no other animal has occupied such an important place in the thought and art of the Chinese people.
