The city is nestled among the hills of the Eastern Ghats and faces the Bay of Bengal to the east. It is located on NH-16 (Kolkata- Chennai Highway). It is the administrative headquarters of Visakhapatnam district and also the Financial Capital of Andhra Pradesh. It is a fascinating town ship with multi-cultural ambience and a rich cultural heritage. This is major Industrial and fastest growing city of Andhra Pradesh after bifurcation of united Andhra Pradesh. It is a Hub of business activities and is one of the fastest growing cities of India, having highest per capita income in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The city sometimes goes by its now mostly defunct colonial British name, Waltair. During the colonial era, the city's hub was the Waltair railway station, and that part of the city still is called Waltair. Visakhapatnam has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission. Visakhapatnam was ranked as the fifth cleanest city in India according to the government's Swachhta Sarvekshan rankings.
