To survive, the ballad had to have a repertoire of mnemonic devices. Ballad singers knew not one but a whole Style of the ballads host of ballads (Mrs Brown of Falkland knew thirty-three separate ballads). -
A Collection of Ballads
A COLLECTION OF BALLADS INTRODUCTION When the learned first gave serious attention to popular ballads, from the time of Percy to that of Scott, they laboured under certain disabilities. The Comparative Method was scarcely understood, and was little practised. Editors were content to study the ballads of their own countryside, or, at most, of Great Britain. Teutonic and Northern parallels to our ballads were then adduced, as by Scott and Jamieson. It was later that the ballads of Europe, from the Faroes to Modern Greece, were compared with our own, with European Märchen, or children’s tales, and with the popular songs, dances, and traditions of classical and savage peoples. The results of this more recent comparison may be briefly stated. Poetry begins, as Aristotle says, in improvisation. Every man is his own poet, and, in moments of stronge motion, expresses himself in song. A typical example is the Song of Lamech in Genesis— “I have slain a man to my wounding, And a young man to my hurt.” Instances perpetually occur in the Sagas: Grettir, Egil, Skarphedin, are always singing. In Kidnapped, Mr. Stevenson introduces “The Song of the Sword of Alan,” a fine example of Celtic practice: words and air are beaten out together, in the heat of victory. In the same way, the women sang improvised dirges, like Helen; lullabies, like the lullaby of Danae in Simonides, and flower songs, as in modern Italy. Every function of life, war, agriculture, the chase, had its appropriate magical and mimetic dance and song, as in Finland, among Red Indians, and among Australian blacks. -

Tradition label Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Tradition Label Discography The Tradition Label was established in New York City in 1956 by Pat Clancy (of the Clancy Brothers) and Diane Hamilton. The label recorded folk and blues music. The label was independent and active from 1956 until about 1961. Kenny Goldstein was the producer for the label during the early years. During 1960 and 1961, Charlie Rothschild took over the business side of the company. Clancy sold the company to Bernard Solomon at Everest Records in 1966. Everest started issuing albums on the label in 1967 and continued until 1974 using recordings from the original Tradition label and Vee Jay/Horizon. VAUGHAN WILLIAMS MEMORIAL LIBRARY LUCY BROADWOOD COLLECTION CATALOGUE Introduction In 1931, two years after Lucy Broadwood's death, her executor Leopold Broadwood offered to the Folk Song Society a collection of her music MS, notes, and letters. This represented the 'folk song' or 'official' part of her papers, separated somewhat haphazardly from her more private correspondence which eventually (in 1977) went to Surrey Record Office. The collection was gathered together and arranged in the early 1960s by Margaret Dean-Smith and Ethel Bassin. Before that, according to Miss Dean-Smith, it had lain in utter confusion, with 'much of the correspondence ... pell-mell amongst sheets of music'. They arranged the material in envelopes and placed it in boxes with a rough contents list, but the items were not numbered and no actual catalogue was prepared. Margaret Dean-Smith transcribed some of the material and used it in her 'Letters to Lucy Broadwood', published in the EFDSS Journal in 1964. Except for the absence of a catalogue, this arrangement was quite satisfactory, but c.1972 a decision was made to microfilm the music MSS, and for this purpose it was removed from its accompanying material and thereafter kept in a separate box. No doubt, this was done with the best of intentions, but nonetheless it constituted a major archival crime, since no attempt was made to indicate what had been removed, or the provenance of the removals. The process was not even consistent, since not all the music was microfilmed: one major collection, that of Mrs. Leather, was omitted completely. Of the material which was filmed, some was from printed collections and there was even an original MS poem by Lucy Broadwood. -

DECEMBER 1, 1828 Vol. l ANCIENT BALLADS OF THE NORTH OF SCOTLAND* Touching ballads and ballad-makers so much has been said or sung by various worthy and ingenious spirits within this last half century, that, honestly speaking, we find little remains for us to do than briefly to report to our readers the sum of their learned labours on this interesting topic. For your modern foisonless poetical inventions, called ballads, we care not a doit; but for the old traditionary, romantic, or heroic strain, which, like the shibboleth of free masonry, has lived upon the memory without the intervention of written character, and has been transmitted from sire to son, from generation unto generation, from the remotest times to the present graceless days, we profess a sincere and perfect love. When, therefore, we meet with a goodly volume of ancient ballads, purporting to be for the first time set forth in print, we are ready to hail the choice blessing in these words which an early dramatist puts in the mouth of that wicked and unnatural jade Ragan: As gold is welcome to the covetous eye, As sleepe is welcome to the traveller, As is fresh water to sea-beaten men, Or moist’ned showres unto the parched ground, Or any thing more welcomer than this,† So, and more welcome we repeat to our literary affections, are these poetical monuments of our fathers.—So, and most welcome to us are these volumes, for in honest verity they contain many admirable and most valuable remains of the early song of our native land. -

I gratefully acknowledge the help and hospitality given me by the staffs of both institutions and their willingness to allow me to make these materials more widely available. My visits to both facilities in search of data, transcribing hundreds of letters to bring home and analyze, was initially provided by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial and Andrew W. Mellon foundations and subsequently—for checking my transcriptions and gathering additional material--by the Office of the Provost for Research at Indiana University Bloomington. This serial support has made my work possible. Quite unexpectedly, two colleagues/friends met me the last time I was in Kirkcudbright (2014) and spent time helping me correct several difficult letters and sharing their own perspectives on these and other materials—John MacQueen and the late Ronnie Clark. Robert E. Lewis helped me transcribe more accurately Child’s reference and quotation from Chaucer; that help reminded me that many of the letters would benefit from copious explanatory notes in the future.
