Chapter 3 – the British in North America 3 The British in North America Chapter What kind of society did the British colonists create in INQUIRY North America? Key L Mercantilism CONCEPT Many imperial powers from Europe used the mercantile system to grow powerful. Mercantilism allowed an imperial country to become rich in gold and silver by selling the resources taken from its colonies. Fish, furs, wood, and iron ore could bring the home country great wealth. With unlimited access to these resources, the home country no longer had to pay to get them from other countries. The imperial country could consume as many resources as it needed. Then it could make even more money by selling what it didn’t need to other countries in exchange for gold and silver. This chapter examines Britain as an example of one imperial power that used the mercantile system. Through its colonies in North America, Britain hoped to obtain everything it needed to become rich and powerful. British Colonies In Chapter 2, you learned how newcomers from France built colonies in North America. In this chapter, you’ll discover the reasons why Britain wanted to do the same. You’ll see how Britain’s colonies differed from those of France. This chapter gives you a chance to analyze the impact of the newcomers on the First Nations. Nevertheless, burial sites throughout Saskatchewan help tell the story of the first peoples and their cultures. Extensive studies of archeological evidence associated with burial sites have resulted in important conclusions with respect to the ethnicity of the people using the southeast Saskatchewan region over the last 1,000 years. In her Master Thesis, Sheila Dawson (1987) concluded that the bison culture frequently using this area was likely the Sioux/ Assiniboine people.

    37 The "Bowrey" Dictionary and Henry Kelsey H. Christoph Wolfart University of Manitoba David H. Pentland University of Calgary The collections of the British Museum include what appears to be the earliest substantial document of Cree: a pamphlet of seven pages in folio, without any overt indication of author, date or place of printing. The only explicit iden­ tification is the title: A Dictionary of the Hudson's-Bay Indian Language. Thomas Bowrey This dictionary of approximately 600 entries has long been associated with the name of Thomas Bowrey. For Algonquian- ists, the most important citation is that of Pilling (1891: 54-55) who, if he had any doubts about the dictionary's authorship, expresses them only by the explicit mention of his sources: Ludewig's Literature of American Aboriginal Languages of 1858 which, he claims erroneously, followed the Bibliotheca Britannica of Robert Watt, published in 1824. Bowrey also appears as the author in most general biblio­ graphies, notably Sabin's Dictionary of Books Relating to America (vol. 2, 1869) and both editions (1956, 1973) of Peel's Bibliography of the Prairie Provinces. Apart from a few oblique remarks, Algonquianists have ignored the Dictionary of the Hudson's-Bay Indian Language, and not even its presumed author—otherwise unknown in early North America—appears to have elicited much interest. The only question about Bowrey's authorship was raised by the editor of his papers (Temple 1905:xli) who concludes rather diffidently that "if the Dictionary ... were really the work of Bowrey, then he must also have voyaged to North America." Thomas Bowrey was a "free merchant" whose life spanned many voyages to India (mainly between 1669 and 1679) and a number of European enterprises.

(Winnipeg: Dawson Richardson Publications, Limited, for The Historical and Scientific So­ ciety of Manitoba, May 1928. Pp. 43. With maps.) Professor Bell describes Henry Kelsey as being "the fii'st white man to reach the Saskatchewan River from Hudson's Bay, and the first to see the Buffalo and Grizzly Bear of the Canadian Plains," and in the 43 pages of the brochure proceeds to demon­ strate the accuracy of the statement. In driving home his points, the learned author shows that he had searched diligently and pain­ stakingly into the highways and byways of original sources, and the result is a comprehensive mass of information condensed 111 a remarkably small compass, much of it being made available to the general public for the first time. Kelsey was an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company in whose service he was from 1683 until 1722, a period of thirty­ nine years, most of it spent on Hudson's Bay. When he landed at York Factory, the Company was only in the thirteenth year of its existance. In 1689 he was put ashore north of Churchill River, wi'th an Indian lad as his sole companion, with instructions to journey into the northern country with the object of persuad­ ing the natives to bring their trade to the Company. He journeyed two hundred miles into the wilderness, which, so far as known records go, had until then been untrodden by any European.

Reluctant explorers, traders looked for easier access and cheaper means of transport. Initially content to wait on the shores of the Bay, HBC was forced to meet their competitors in the natives’ homelands. The Red River Valley was easily accessed from Hudson’s Bay, becoming the center of the fur trade in the northern plains. HBC helped colonize the first permanent settlement west of the Great Lakes in the Red River Valley.

The idea that before settlement the grizzly occurred far across the prairie eastward of the Rocky Mountains has prevailed for a long time (Seton 1929; Hall & Kelson 1959). Since the geographic distribution of a species is a matter of ecologic significance, it may be worthwhile to examine this information. It is recognized, of course, that a line on a map demarking the outer limit of a distribution in any direction does not represent necessarily either a continuous or static situation. Henry Kelsey (1929) seems to have been the first European adventurer to leave a record concerning the grizzly in the mid-continent region. In his journal entry for 20 August 1691, he provides a description of this bear which is sur- prisingly brief considering it was doubtless a new experience.
