NEW THh PAS BKIMit KEY TO NORTH ROADS Number 10 highway in northern Manitoba is undergoing a major facelifting. Included are a new bridge at The Pas, re-location of the roadway in the vicinity of Flin Flon, and paving and improvement programs in the vicinity of The Pas. Latest step in this development was the ceremony held Saturda71 October 19, to mark the start of work on the bridge over the Saskatchewan River at The Pas. Transportation Minister Stewart E. McLean referred to the bridge as a "new and vital link" in the northern road system of the province. Participating in the ceremony were Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs John B. Carroll, Minister of Labour C.H. Witney, Mayor Harry Trager of The Pas, and Chief Gordon Lathlin of The Pas Indian band. The $1.63 million bridge is to be made of steel and re-inforced concrete and will be about 1,200 feet long. The new bridge is to be finished in the late fall of 1969, and will improve truck service into the north, which is now handicapped by load restrictions on the present obsolete bridge. Tenders have been opened for the grading of the last portion of the re-location of No. 10 highway at Flin Flon. Low bid of the six submitted is $259,746 from Pneumatic Drilling and Blasting Limited of St. James. This covers 1.5 miles and includes blasting and removal of 47,000 cubic yards of rock, with work to be completed by next summer. -

Researchers claim they are set up according to the stars and planets, clearly depicting that the Moose Mountain area has been an important spiritual location for millennia. 23 Establishing Cultural Connections to Archeological Artifacts Archeologists have found it difficult to establish links between artifacts and specific cultural groups. It is difficult to associate artifacts found in burial or ancient camp sites with distinct cultural practices because aboriginal livelihood and survival techniques were similar between cultures in similar ecosystem environments. Nevertheless, burial sites throughout Saskatchewan help tell the story of the first peoples and their cultures. Extensive studies of archeological evidence associated with burial sites have resulted in important conclusions with respect to the ethnicity of the people using the southeast Saskatchewan region over the last 1,000 years. In her Master Thesis, Sheila Dawson (1987) concluded that the bison culture frequently using this area was likely the Sioux/ Assiniboine people. -

His stay at Nootka was so brief, his exploration of the coast so perfunctory, and his preoccupation with Alaska so much to be deplored. We are driven, in asking the reasons for these solecisms, to examine his instructions from the Admiralty for the third voyage. Alas, they hardly mention the coast of Northwest America between 45 ° and 65 ° North. Did their Lordships of the Admiralty slip up? Was Cook, that supreme professional who had had a hand in drawing up his own instructions, at less than his expert best? Did Palinurus nod at the helm? LAWRENCE MARITIME TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM Mike Piskur† ABSTRACT: The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Maritime Transportation System (“MTS”) bears critical importance to the economic competitiveness of Canada and the United States (“US”). Maritime transportation comprises both a major economic driver and job creator for both countries. As a cost-effective and highly efficient means of transporting raw materials and finished products to market, the MTS is essential to agricultural, mining, and manufacturing supply chains that frequently stretch across the US-Canada border and beyond. Yet management of the MTS is fragmented, with responsibility for various system components scattered across numerous federal agencies in both the US and Canada. This fragmentation results in a dearth of transparency, confusing and disjointed governmental authority, higher user costs, barriers to establishing new markets, and overall reduced system competitiveness.
