A Buddhist Sütra's Transformation Into a Daoist Text
A BUDDHIST SÜTRA'S TRANSFORMATION INTO A DAOIST TEXT Stephan Peter Bumbacher, Universities of Tübingen and Zürich for Robert H. Gassmann, at his 60th birthday Abstract Daoism and Chinese Buddhism interacted in complex ways over the last two millenia. However, the precise nature of this two-way exchange still awaits a systematic investigation. Since the early 1980s, the Buddhist impact on lingbao-Daoism has become evident. Recently, it was suggested that the developing Daoist monasticism of fifth century Southern China may also have been influ¬ enced by the then already existing Buddhist one. Of special interest are Daoist texts that predate the lingbao-corpus and show some form of Buddhist influence as they might have had an impact on the latter. As a possible point of departure, an analysis of Yang Xi's adaptation of the Buddhist Forty-two sections of Buddhist sutras is offered. It shows that already a generation earlier than Ge Chaofu's lingbao scriptures Daoists not only had first hand knowledge of Buddhism but even made verbatim use of their scriptures to their own ends. As a by-product of this analysis, it is even possible to emend the received version of the Forty-two sections of Buddhist sutras where it apparently is defective. 1. Introduction The first four centuries of the common era witnessed not only the arrival of some forms of Buddhism in China, this was also the formative period of several traditions of Daoism, the indigenous Chinese Hochreligion.1 Both were essen¬ tially different: whereas the Buddhists sought to get out of samsära by entering nirväna or final extinction, the Daoists aimed at becoming immortals - either earthly immortals who would live on on earth for centuries, now and then chang¬ ing their whereabouts and altering their social identities, or heavenly immortals who would ascend heaven in broad daylight in order to integrate themselves into the heavenly hierarchy. -

The Misrepresentation of Representation: In Defense of Regional Storytelling in Netflix’s The New Legends of Monkey KATE MCEACHEN The 2018 Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC Me), Television New Zealand (TVNZ), and Netflix’s coproduction of the original series The New Legends of Monkey (2018) is a fantasy-based television series that reimagines Monkey (1978), a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) dubbing of the Japanese television series Saiyūki 西遊記. Saiyūki was an adaptation of the historically significant Chinese novel Xiyou ji (Wu Cheng’en, 1592), known in English as Journey to the West. Monkey gained a cult following in Australia, New Zealand, and other international markets leading to the 2018 reboot The New Legends of Monkey, which, unlike Monkey, was released in the United States (Flanagan). This new iteration prompted cultural confusion from those largely unfamiliar with the preceding series, the contexts in which it was introduced to English-speaking viewers in Australia and New Zealand, or the cult response that resulted. This article presents the recent series with this background in mind and within the context of locally produced television in New Zealand, where The New Legends of Monkey was filmed. Analysis of online discussions exposes the interpretive differences arising from this lack of context regarding the show’s connection to Monkey and highlights the problems viewers face interpreting stories outside of their local production markets—an increasingly relevant problem as more regional productions become accessible to a wide range of audiences through transnational streaming services like Netflix. Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. Recording the West: Central Asia in Xuanzang’s Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions Master’s Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master Arts in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Laura Pearce Graduate Program in East Asian Studies Ohio State University 2018 Committee: Morgan Liu (Advisor), Ying Zhang, and Mark Bender Copyrighted by Laura Elizabeth Pearce 2018 Abstract In 626 C.E., the Buddhist monk Xuanzang left the Tang Empire for India in a quest to deepen his religious understanding. In order to reach India, and in order to return, Xuanzang journeyed through areas in what is now called Central Asia. After he came home to China in 645 C.E., his work included writing an account of the countries he had visited: The Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions (Da Tang Xi You Ji 大唐西域記). The book is not a narrative travelogue, but rather presented as a collection of facts about the various countries he visited. Nevertheless, the Record is full of moral judgments, both stated and implied. Xuanzang’s judgment was frequently connected both to his Buddhist beliefs and a conviction that China represented the pinnacle of culture and good governance. Xuanzang’s portrayal of Central Asia at a crucial time when the Tang Empire was expanding westward is both inclusive and marginalizing, shaped by the overall framing of Central Asia in the Record and by the selection of local legends from individual nations. The tension in the Record between Buddhist concerns and secular political ones, and between an inclusive worldview and one centered on certain locations, creates an approach to Central Asia unlike that of many similar sources. -

He went to a wise man to learn magic tricks and many other things. The wise man named him Sun Wukong. Needing a weapon, Sun Wukong took the Dragon King’s magic stick by force. For his crime, the Heavenly God brought him to heaven to do a lowly job, but Sun Wukong ran away. So Sakyamuni Buddha put him under a mountain. Five hundred years later, the monk Sanzang passed by and freed him. Sun Wukong then joined him on his trip to India to get some holy Buddhist books. Later they were joined by Zhu Wuneng and Sha Wujing. On the way, the group met two demon brothers who had a magic bottle. Anyone who said the word “what” would be sucked into the bottle. The demons tricked Sun Wukong into the bottle, but he escaped. Sun Wukong then tricked the two brothers into the bottle. Further along the way, Sun Wukong fought to get a witch’s magic fan to put out the fire on a mountain so they could cross the mountain. Finally, after fourteen years, Sanzang and his followers arrived at a monastery where Sakyamuni Buddha was staying. The Buddha gave Sanzang 5,048 scrolls. With the help of the Buddha’s guards, the group took only eight days to return home. Sanzang, Sun Wukong, and Zhu Wuneng eventually became Buddhas, and Sha Wujing became a worthy one. -

However, scholars are frustrated by the extremely fluid nature of the region’s ethnic, religious, and political composition, which makes research on the historical process of any specific period seem like an overwhelming task. Scholars of Central Asia’s Buddhist culture feel reluctant to deal with the region after the Islamic conquest, which occurred in the late seventh and early eighth centuries, while those who study its history after the Islamic conquest are perplexed by the persistent presence of many pre-Islamic languages and cultural traits in the region. Likewise, scholars who are familiar with the Chinese historical literature on Central Asia often hesitate venturing into the deep ocean of Persian and Arabic literature on the region. Further- more, in the last two decades, the discovery of many documents writ- ten in various versions of Greek alphabets in the region that once was Bactria makes the task of treading through literary sources even more daunting. -
Chan Buddhism During the Times of Venerable Master Yixuan and Venerable Master Hsing Yun: Applying Chinese Chan Principles to Contemporary Society
《 》學報 ‧ 藝文│第三十二期 外文論文 Chan Buddhism During the Times of Venerable Master Yixuan and Venerable Master Hsing Yun: Applying Chinese Chan Principles to Contemporary Society Shi Juewei Director, Humanistic Buddhism Centre (Australia) Linji Venerable Master Yixuan 臨濟義玄 (d. 866) and Fo Guang Venerable Master Hsing Yun 佛光星雲1 (1927–), although separated by more than a millennium, innovatively applied Chan teachings to the societies in which they lived to help their devotees discover their humanity and transcend their existential conditions. Both religious leaders not only survived persecution, but brought their faiths to greater heights. This paper studies how these masters adapted Chan Buddhist teachings to the woes and conditions of their times. In particular, I shall review how Venerable Master Yixuan and Venerable Master Hsing Yun adapted the teachings of their predecessors, added value to the socio- political milieu of their times, and used familiar language to reconcile reality and their beliefs. Background These two Chan masters were selected because of the significance of their contributions. Venerable Master Yixuan was not only the founder of a popular 1. In this paper, I use the more popular “Hsing Yun” instead. 170 Chan Buddhism During the Times of Venerable Master Yixuan and Venerable Master Hsing Yun: Applying Chinese Chan Principles to Contemporary Society Linji2 school in Chan Buddhism but was also posthumously awarded the title of Meditation Master of Wisdom Illumination (Huizhao Chanshi 慧照禪師)3 by Emperor Yizong 懿宗 of the Tang dynasty (r. 859–873). Venerable Master Hsing Yun, a strong proponent of Humanistic Buddhism, is the recipient of over 30 honorary doctoral degrees and honorary professorships from universities around the world.4 To have received such accolades, both Chan masters ought to have made momentous contribution to their societies. -

Tang Xuanzang: The World Famous Buddhist Pilgrim as He is known in Thai Art and Literature Assf.Prof.Dr.Sudarat Buntoakul Faculty of Buddhism Abstract The research indicates that Tang Xuanzang was introduced to Thais as a Buddhist pilgrim in the novel Journey to the West, which was published by Printing Press Books in the mid-nineteenth century, although it had been translated into Thai at the beginning of that century. The story became better known to Thais after the advent of television in Thailand in the mid-twentieth century and many versions were broadcast. Illustrations from Journey to the West at Wat Kuti, Petchaburi, Thailand were examined. Representations of Xuanzang and his three protectors appear on the outer wall of the Main Hall, along with illustrations that depict ten incarnations of Gotama Buddha in teak woodcarvings. The artwork clearly shows evidence of Indian and Chinese cultural influences. The temple with these reliefs is today preserved as an archeological site in Thailand. Though the Great Tang Records of the Western Regions is an historical account, it has only been translated into Thai and published recently. Furthermore, one must master the twelve channel systems, the three locations and nine positions of pulse diagnosis, the system of the five zang and the six fu organs, the concept of surface and interior, the acumoxa points, as well as the materia medica in the form of single herbs, herb pairs, and the classic formulas presented in the writings of Zhang Zhongjing (fl.150-219, author of theShanghan zabing lun), Wang Shuhe (fl.210-286, author of the Maijing), Ruan Henan (4th century, author of the Ruan Henan yaofang), Fan Dongyang (fl.308-372, author of the Fan Dongyang fang), Zhang Miao (4th century), Jin Shao (4th century) and other masters. In addition, one should have a masterful grasp of the science of determining the Yin-Yang of destiny (yinyang lu ming), all schools of physiognomy (xiangfa), and the divinatory technique of interpreting the five omens in fire- cracked turtle shells (shaogui wuzhao), as well as the skill of Book of Change divination utilizing the system of the heavenly stems and earthly branches forming a cycle of sixty years (Zhouyi liuren). It is imperative that one masters all of these methods with the depth of an expert, only then can one become a great physician.
