Douglas Rushkoff The Simpsons are the closest thing in America to a national media literacy program. By pretending to be a kids’ cartoon, the show gets away with murder: that is, the virtual murder of our most coercive media iconography and techniques. For what began as entertaining interstitial material for an alternative network variety show has revealed itself, in the twenty-first century, as nothing short of a media revolu tion. Maybe that’s the very reason The Simpsons works so well. The Simpsons were bom to provide The Tracey Ullman Show with a way of cutting to commercial breaks. Their very function as a form of media was to bridge the discontinuity inherent to broadcast television. They existed to pave over the breaks. But rather than dampening the effects of these gaps in the broadcast stream, they heightened them. They acknowledged the jagged edges and recombinant forms behind the glossy patina of American television and, by doing so, initiated its deconstruction. They exist in the outlying suburbs of the American media landscape: the hinter lands of the Fox network. And living as they do—simultaneously a part of yet separate from the mainstream, primetime fare—they are able to bear witness to our cultural formulations and then comment upon them. -

Islands in the Screen: the Robinsonnade As Television Genre Des Îles À L’Écran : La Robinsonnade Comme Genre Télévisuel Paul Heyer
Document generated on 09/24/2021 6:24 p.m. Cinémas Revue d'études cinématographiques Journal of Film Studies Islands in the Screen: The Robinsonnade as Television Genre Des îles à l’écran : la robinsonnade comme genre télévisuel Paul Heyer Fictions télévisuelles : approches esthétiques Article abstract Volume 23, Number 2-3, Spring 2013 The island survivor narrative, or robinsonnade, has emerged as a small but significant television genre over the past 50 years. The author considers its URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1015187ar origins as a literary genre and the screen adaptations that followed. Emphasis DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1015187ar is placed on how “island TV” employed a television aesthetic that ranged from an earlier conventional approach, using three cameras, studio locations, and See table of contents narrative resolution in each episode, to open-ended storylines employing a cinematic style that exploits the new generation of widescreen televisions, especially with the advent of HDTV. Two case studies centre the argument: Gilligan’s Island as an example of the former, more conventional aesthetic, and Publisher(s) Lost as an example of the new approach. Although both series became Cinémas exceedingly popular, other notable programs are considered, two of which involved Canadian production teams: Swiss Family Robinson and The Mysterious Island. Finally, connections are drawn between robinsonnades and ISSN the emerging post-apocalyptic genre as it has moved from cinema to television. 1181-6945 (print) 1705-6500 (digital) Explore this journal Cite this article Heyer, P. Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. Delineating Boundaries Between 'Us' and 'Them'
Delineating boundaries between 'us' and 'them' $UHFHSWLRQVWXG\RIWKHUHSUHVHQWDWLRQRI Muslim characters in the television serial 24 5ROI+DOVH Dissertation for the degree philosophiae doctor (PhD) at the University of Bergen Abstract This thesis presents an examination of the US television serial 24’s representation of Muslim characters, and it explores to what extent the perception of these characters can be determined by the cultural and ethnic belonging of the audience. The present thesis shows how 24 participated in forming an arena in which representations, mental images, social relations, and boundaries between ingroup members and outgroup members are constructed and negotiated. The main reason for choosing to study 24 exclusively is that after 9/11 the serial played a central role in the public debate about whether Muslims are being stereotyped in US television entertainment. Hence, the thesis examines whether the critics of 24 have a valid point with regards to the show’s portrayal of negative stereotypes. It also assesses to what extent the serial’s effort to introduce Muslim counter-stereotypes proved to be an adequate response to the criticism. A qualitative research approach is used for examining 24 by combining textual and audience reception analysis. Close readings of selected episodes of the TV serial is carried out, and the crux of the analysis centres on whether, and if so in what respects the representation of the characters are stereotypical/counter-stereotypical. Moreover, it is examined how different interpretive communities of young adults, mainly from Norway, but also from the United States, read and perceive the portrayal of Muslim characters in the same television texts. -
