The theories of Butler (1990) and Pennycook (2004) are used to investigate how language is used to perform identity. Using transcripts of the Afrikaaps theatre production and an interview with an Afrikaaps performer, Emile Jansen (also known as Emile YX?), the themes of self-knowledge as opposed to shame within the Coloured community are investigated. Also pertinent to this discussion are the themes of hybridity and marginality. Furthermore, the theatre production’s emphasis on the legalisation of Kaaps is further explored in this thesis. A discussion of the methodology and data collection instruments follows.

Elvire Fabry | senior research fellow at the Jacques Delors Institute SUMMARY Two years after the start of negotiations for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) in July 2013, the evolution of French public opinion is intriguing. THE EVOLUTION OF FRENCH PUBLIC OPINION It was expected that opposition to TTIP would come primarily from France, IS INTRIGUING” where public opinion is traditionally wary of trade liberalisation. But in November 2014, when 59% of Europeans and 25 of 28 member states said they were in favour of TTIP, 50% of French held a favourable opinion while the Germans had become the leading opponents of TTIP. The shift in German public opinion in spring 2014 had not been anticipated, considering that the German econ- omy has turned towards exports and that the German government itself was active in supporting the launch of negotiations. Public debate over TTIP has only truly manifested in France during the European election campaigns of May 2014, when the minor parties opposed to negotiations put the spotlight on the sanitary, phytosanitary, and environmental issues of the negotiations. The two major political groups adopted a more cautious and even evasive approach, waiting until autumn 2014 to clearly state their positions. In summer 2014, meanwhile, the inclusion of a mechanism to resolve disputes between investor and state has imposed itself as a source of more mobilising fears and has united a cross-partisan opposition which has con- tributed to growing doubts over the benefits of the agreement.

The full statement of work is appended. The key issues were stated as: The purpose of this review is to provide an objective, independent, external scientific peer review of the information in the proposed rule. The proposed rule is 246 pages long and synthesizes the existing best available scientific and commercial information regarding the status of various gray wolf populations and subspecies that occur within portions of the lower 48 States where the species is currently listed. Factors to be addressed in the peer review include the scientific merit of the proposed rule’s primary analysis components (i.e., gray wolf taxonomy and status) which provide the basis for the proposal. The peer reviewers should confirm that any scientific uncertainties are clearly identified and characterized by the Service, and the potential implications of the uncertainties for the technical conclusions drawn are clear. He's actually the only president we've had in all of American history so far who spoke English as his second language. He comes from a modest family. His father owns a farm and a tavern. Taverns at the time, though, were the main places that people would gather to talk politics -- so, he's exposed to politics from a very early age and gets involved at the local level. Van Buren works his way up the political ranks from the local level to the state level to the national level. He eventually becomes the main strategist for Andrew Jackson's successful presidential run in 1828. By Jackson's second term, Martin Van Buren is appointed vice president.

Dr. Nicole Koenig | Senior research fellow, Jacques Delors Institut – Berlin Marie Walter-Franke | Research associate, Jacques Delors Institut – Berlin SUMMARY The Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) has become one of the most dynamic fields of European inte- gration. The destabilisation of the EU’s neighbourhood, Brexit, and uncertainty in the transatlantic security partnership were important drivers behind this revitalisation. France and Germany reacted by jointly propa- gating the vision of a European Security and Defence Union. However, the CSDP is a policy area that has often been characterised by a gap between vision and action. This paper therefore offers a cautious assessment of the current window of opportunity, based on two questions: First, is the necessary condition for deeper defence integration, a unified Franco-German leadership, really met? Second, is it a sufficient condition for the development of an ambitious Security and Defence Union? The review of new drivers and old constraints offers a mixed picture. Despite a degree of strategic conver- gence between France and Germany, long-standing differences in terms of political culture and public percep- tion persist. While Brexit means that a key veto player on CSDP matters is leaving the EU stage, recent experi- ence has shown that it is not the only one. Not all EU member states are keen to follow the Franco-German lead. This mixed assessment explains why the EU has so far only taken cautious steps towards a European Security and Defence Union. Some of the more ambitious measures that entail sharing risks, delegating sov- ereignty, or pooling resources are still in the pipeline.
