[v] Acknowledgments If I’ve learned anything in the last seven years, it’s that ideas live less in the minds of individuals than in the interactions of communities. The ideas in this book are no exception: they owe their origin to a far-flung network of extraordinarily generous teachers, colleagues, friends, and interviewees, to all of whom I’m very grateful. I first began thinking about the Whole Earth network and the politics of information technology while I was a PhD student in the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego. My professors there offered me an ideal mix of direction and freedom. They consistently demanded that I reach across disciplinary boundaries, pursue difficult questions, and find my own voice on the page.Asmyearlyinterestsgelledintoadissertation,ProfessorsMichael Schudson, Robert Horwitz, Chandra Mukerji, Geoffrey Bowker, Lev Manovich, Philip Agre, and Steven Epstein each introduced me to new literatures, read multiple drafts of chapters, and patiently helped me frame my fascination with the Whole Earth Catalog in analytical terms. Together, they offered me a model of what a life devoted to engaged, public-minded scholarship and committed teaching could be. Three years into my work at UCSD, I moved to Boston and began teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. MIT is the kind of place where you can be hired to play in one intellectual sandbox and suddenly find yourself jumping into others; fortunately, that’s what happened to me. There I had the [ vii ] [ viii ] Acknowledgments incredible luck to find three new teachers: Professors JoAnne Yates, Pablo Boczkowski, and Joe Dumit. They introduced me to much of the literature in the fields of organizational sociology and science and technology studies that informs this book. Sloan also allowed me to teach with a highly experi- enced and delightful group of colleagues, including Lori Breslow, Neal Hartman, Leigh Hafrey, and Melissa Raffoni, all of whom made coming to work a treat. At the same time, I found my way to MIT’s Comparative Media Studies Program, where Professors Henry Jenkins, William Uricchio, and David Thorburn taught me a great deal about the dynamics of digital media and contemporary culture. So did three graduate students with whom I worked: David Spitz, Anita Chan, and Zhan Li. I also want to thank Catherine Friedman, then head of MIT’s Dewey Library, and her staff for going to exceptional lengths to keep my office bookshelves well stocked. Since 2003 I have been happily housed in the Department of Communi- cation at Stanford University. Writing this book at Stanford has been a de- light for a number of reasons. For one, many of the events I have written about took place within shouting distance of my office. Thus I have been al- lowed to enjoy one of the peculiar pleasures of those who study the past: the chance to walk through a landscape and in the same moment to see it as it is and imagine it as it used to be. North, Chair Stewart Brand’s Whole Earth publications (The Whole Earth Catalog, The Supplement to the Whole Earth Catalog, CoEvolution Quarterly, The Whole Earth Review, and Whole Earth) were well known not only for showcasing alternative approaches to technology, the environment, and Eastern mysticism, but also for their tendency to juxtapose radical and seemingly contradictory subjects in an “open form” format. They have also been the focus of notable works of scholarship in the social sciences. Areas of exploration include their relationship to the development of the personal computer, the environmental movement and alternative technology, the alternative West Coast publishing industry, Space Colonies, and Nanotechnology. What is perhaps less well known is Brand’s interest in the Beat poetry of Jack Kerouac, Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso, Robert Creeley, David Meltzer, and Peter Orlovsky beginning with CoEvolution Quarterly in 1974. Brand’s decision to include ecologically based free-verse Beat poems is also indicative of ii a particular way of seeing science and technology. The term “coevolution” itself is biological in origin and refers to the evolutionary relationship between predator and prey: a lizard may turn green to fade into the grass, but an eagle, with its highly developed vision, will be able to spot the lizard hiding among the green blades.

    Manhood in the Age of Aquarius Chapter 5 Tim Hodgdon Chapter 5 "We Here Work as Hard as We Can": The Farm's Sexual Division of Labor In the spring of 1975, Patricia Mitchell, her preschool son, and her lover, Don 1 Lapidus, arrived at the entrance to The Farm, hoping to join. They had read about the burgeoning commune in its book-length recruitment brochure, Hey, Beatnik, and after much discussion, had packed their possessions in their car. At the front gate, a man with a clipboard described the hippie village as a monastery of householder yogis where Stephen Gaskin's teachings guided daily labor and family life. Gaskin's students, he said, agreed to live together nonviolently, to consume a strictly vegan diet, and to hold all money and property in common. After some time at the gate, the three were admitted as "soakers," soaking up the new life that was The Farm.1 A member of the gate crew drove the new soakers to their host households. The 2 Mitchell-Lapidus trio were welcomed into a structure consisting of a large army tent (recall the frame–and–canvas structures in the television comedy M*A*S*H) flanked by two Caravan-vintage school buses, where twelve people made their home. For the duration of their time as soakers, the family slept on a couch in the tent.2 They arrived in time to help with preparations for dinner. Patricia joined women in the kitchen area of the tent, washing potatoes from the previous year's harvest.3 Over dinner, their hosts reminisced about The Farm's beginnings.

This article is available in communication +1: http://scholarworks.umass.edu/cpo/vol3/iss1/1 Vagt and Sprenger: Introduction Under the impression of today’s planetary crises, the rise of ecological thinking, as well as technologies of smart, ubiquitous systems and the impression of global interconnectedness, there appears a new desire to excavate the remnants of the past. To investigate the historical and epistemological foundations of current systems thinking promises to lead to an understanding of the current condition that we are in – and its technological groundings. When system-oriented thinking emerged within biological contexts in the first half of the 20 th Century, it came along with universal pretensions: the concepts of ecosystems (Tansley) and general systems theory (von Bertalanffy) were both immersed in longstanding struggles between materialism and holism.
