Foreword Celebrating 150 years of the Cadets The Cadet Forces have, not unnaturally, come a long way from their 1860s origins. They have evolved into unique voluntary youth organisations, offering young people opportunities to develop themselves, to try new adventures and activities, and to learn key lessons in citizenship and the importance of society. But their links to the Armed Forces are as strong as ever. In many areas of the country they are the only face of the Services in the community. They take pride in the values and ethos of the Armed Forces and the lessons of good citizenship and responsibilities these bring. Their essential links with the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Associations, which help administer and support them, are equally strong. None of this would be possible without the Adult Volunteers, whose commitment, leadership and example underpin the development and success of the Cadet Movement. Their reward Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, is to see the cadets change for the better as they are given a Chief of the Defence Staff head-start in life, and as they develop links with the community in which they live. -

Department for Transport: New Assistant Chief of the Air Staff Appointed to the Board of the Civil Aviation Authority
Mar 18, 2010 10:49 GMT Department for Transport: New Assistant Chief of the Air Staff appointed to the Board of the Civil Aviation Authority The Secretary of State for Transport has today appointed Air Vice-Marshal Barry North OBE MA RAF to the Board of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), on the nomination of the Secretary of State for Defence. He replaces AVM Tim Anderson, whom he succeeded as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff on 1 March 2010. The CAA is responsible for the regulation of civil aviation in the United Kingdom and is the Government’s principal advisor on civil aviation matters. It has specific responsibility for airspace policy, aviation safety, consumer protection and the economic regulation of the industry. AVM North will act as a non-executive member of the Authority, with particular responsibility for national security matters. His role at the CAA is unsalaried. NOTES FOR EDITORS 1. Air Vice-Marshal North joined the RAF in 1982 and trained as a transport helicopter pilot. He flew Wessex, Pumas and Chinooks and saw service in Northern Ireland and the Falkland Islands. He became Senior RAF Officer Northern Ireland in 2003 and after promotion to Air Commodore in 2006 took command of all UK air operations within the Gulf region and Afghanistan. After a period overseeing RAF planning activity he was promoted to Air Vice- Marshal in 2009, becoming Air Officer Commanding 22 Group and Chief of Staff Training at HQ Air Command. 2. As Assistant Chief of the Air Staff, AVM North is a member of the Air Force Board and Head of the Service’s Operations Support Branch. -

Press Release 5th February 2009 FURTHER test firing success for ROYAL NAVY’S SEA VIPER AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM Sea Viper, the Royal Navy’s new advanced naval air defence system, was successfully test fired for a second time on 4th February from the trials barge Longbow at the French DGA’s CELM (Centre d’Essais de Lancement des Missiles ) test range near the Ile du Levant off the French coast. The successful firing marks a further key step in the demonstration of the maturity of the Sea Viper system, known until recently in the UK as PAAMS (S), in the lead up to the missile system entering service onboard the Royal Navy’s new Daring class Type 45 destroyers. The trial comprised the firing of a single Aster 15 missile launched against a Mirach target simulating a low level attack by an anti-ship missile. All aspects of the system behaved as expected with the Aster missile intercepting the target at very close range. Nick Neale, PAAMS Project Director in the Aster Systems Programme directorate, said: “Following on from the successful first firing in June last year, this second firing success kicks off our 2009 programme of work in the best possible way. We look forward with pride to completing the remainder of the system qualification programme and to the entry of the system into service on board the RN’s new Type 45 destroyers”. Antoine Bouvier, MBDA’s CEO, said: “This second successful firing is another important milestone for PAAMS and MBDA’s Aster missile system family. It provides a clear demonstration of the performance leap that the PAAMS system will bring when it enters service.” All the Sea Viper system elements have been set to work on the first of class Type 45, HMS Daring. -

Allied Command Transformation Office of the Chief of Staff Norfolk, Virginia | USA Vice Admiral Guy Robinson OBE Chief of Staff Guy Robinson joined the Royal Navy in 1986 as a warfare officer. His seagoing career has been primarily spent in frigates and destroyers, serving as a bridge watchkeeping officer, navigator and then Principal Warfare Officer. He has been fortunate to command three warships: the patrol vessel HMS GUERNSEY, the Type 42 Destroyer HMS EDINBURGH and the Type 45 Destroyer HMS DARING. In 2003, he commanded EDINBURGH during the combat phase of the 2nd Gulf War and was subsequently awarded a Mention-in-Despatches. In 2008 he operated from the Iraqi Khawr al Amaya offshore oil terminal as Commander Task Group 158.1, running operations in the Northern Arabian Gulf. In 2012, he took DARING on the first operational deployment of a Type 45 to the Middle East. From 2015 through 2016 he was the Deputy Commander of United Kingdom Maritime Forces, the Royal Navy’s high readiness battle staff. During that assignment he assumed duties as Commander of Combined Task Force 150, the counter-terrorism task force operating in the Indian Ocean. In his most recent command assignment (2017-21) he was Deputy Commander at Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) based at Oeiras, Portugal; a deployable Joint battle staff whose primary role is the integration of high-end U.S. maritime capabilities into NATO operations. During assignments ashore, Vice Admiral Robinson has served in the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), working as the financial programmer in the above water equipment capability area. -
