Just one of many commemorations around the World to mark one hundred years since the end of The Great War. Another major piece of art, formed a focal point as the UK commemorated 100 years since the end of the First World War. The ‘Shrouds of the Somme’ brought home the sheer scale of human sacrifice in the battle that came to epitomize the bloodshed of the 1914-18 war – the Battle of the Somme. Artist Rob Heard hand stitched and bound calico shrouds for 72,396 figures representing British Commonwealth servicemen killed at the Somme who have no known grave, many of whose bodies were never recovered and whose names are engraved on the Thiepval Memorial. Each figure of a human form, was individually shaped, shrouded and made to a name. They were laid out shoulder to shoulder in hundreds of rows to mark the Centenary of Armistice Day at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from 8-18th November 2018 filling an area of over 4000 square metres. -

It is one of a series that the Commons Library is publishing on the Integrated Review (hereafter the review) and the command paper. 1. Why tilt to the Indo-Pacific? The Government says the UK needs to engage with the Indo-Pacific more deeply for its own security. The review describes the region as being at the “centre of intensifying geopolitical competition with multiple potential flashpoints.” These flashpoints include unresolved territorial disputes in the South China Sea and East China Sea, nuclear proliferation, climate change as a potential driver of conflict, and threats from terrorism and serious organised crime. -

NAVY NEWS WEEK 35-1 26 August 2018 Australian submarine HMAS Sheean returns from three-month Indo-Pacific deployment The Royal Australian Navy’s Collins-class submarine HMAS Sheean returned home to Fleet Base West after almost three months of operations in the Indo-Pacific. The navy did not reveal which exercises the submarine joined and how many port visits the crew made. The only known port visit was the one to Malaysia, which took place in July. Photo: RAN Commodore Buckley, who exercised operational control of Sheean throughout the deployment, is also a previous Commander of the Submarine Force. ―It‟s been a few years since I stood here to welcome back one of our boats, and I am delighted to be here today,‖ he said. ―HMAS Sheean performed exceptionally well in their recent theatre deployment. “The deployed presence of RAN submarines in the Indo-Pacific underpins their vital role as the national maritime strategic deterrent capability.‖ Commander Submarine Force Captain Geoff Wadley also acknowledged the importance of an effective submarine force and noted the hard work put into the submarine enterprise by both military and civilian organizations. ―It’s been a busy year for our boats, which has resulted in significant submarine activity around Australia and overseas,‖ he said. ―It‟s important and gratifying to see everyone in the submarine community, no matter what they do, contribute to providing Australia with a potent and reliable submarine capability.‖ Source: Naval Today Royal Navy sailors recognized for accomplishments under “missile threat” HMS Daring accompanying USNS Brittin. -

MDAA Region Brief: Europe Summer 2016 Addressing the Air and Ballistic Missile Threat to Europe: Cooperating in a Shifting Strategic Environment Introduction Next month’s Warsaw Summit could prove to be one of the most consequential for the alliance since the end of the Cold War as leaders from member states convene to discuss a myriad of threats. NATO Summits are convened on an ad-hoc basis, as required by the evolving political and security situation. In recent years, summit locations have held some thematic significance. This year’s summit in Warsaw is indicative of the increasing threat the alliance faces from the east, particularly in regards to the air challenge. The proliferation of ballistic missile technology also continues to demand the attention of NATO members. In May of this year, two key milestones were achieved in the deployment of European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA) capabilities, the plan put in place by the Obama Administration to protect Europe from a ballistic missile attack originating from Iran. On May 12 Phase II of the EPAA, the Aegis Ashore site in Deveselu, Romania, was deemed operationally certified. The following day on May 13, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for Phase III of the EPAA, an Aegis Ashore site in Redzikowo, Poland. When the work in Poland is complete, Phase 3 will provide the necessary capabilities to provide ballistic missile defense coverage of all NATO European territory and populations in the 2018 timeframe against intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Defending the air above NATO member states also remains a challenge, particularly from an increasingly modern Russian military. -
