This Conference was a special event for our Programme. Benedykt Dybowski was a person, whose life is connected with Poland, Belarus and Ukraine. He was one of those people, whose genius knew no borders and his scientific heritage is of global significance. The Conference is one of the several events commemorating the 15th anniversary of CBC Programme Poland-Belarus-Ukraine and as such, it has symbolic meaning for us – scientists from the three countries had an opportunity to meet together and discuss the topics, which are beyond the borders. Benedykt Dybowski, his extraor- dinary life and his research work were topics which joined these people. In addition to this, for many of them, being able to literary "touch" the results of B. Dybowski’s work, visit the places where he lived and worked was an important and unique ex- perience. Taking the opportunity, I would like to thank the Lviv Ivan Franko National Univer- sity, which hosted the event, in particular, to the people working in the Zoological Museum, who continue the traditions of its founder, Benedykt Dybowski. We are also grateful for the input of our partners and co-organizers - John Paul II Catholic 7 University of Lublin and А. М. Shirokov Institute of Modern Knowledge (Minsk) as well as of all our speakers and participants. We hope that in future our Programme will continue cooperating with high schools and academic communities of the three countries. Sincerely Yours, Paweł Słowikowski Head of the Joint Technical Secretariat Cross-border Cooperation Programme Poland-Belarus-Ukraine 2014-2020 8 Among many Poles deported by the Tsarist Russia in the 19th century to Siberia, there were those who used the difficult situation of exile in order to carry out research acti- vity. Bronisław Piłsudski led pioneer ethnographic studies among the Ainus. Wacław Sieroszewski described the life of the Koreans, Ainus and Jakut communities. Edward Piekarski was examining the language of these all above-mentioned populations. Ewa Felinska conducted ethnographic observations of Ostiaks and Samogitians. The- se are just examples of exiles who saved tribal cultures from oblivion, which without these unique researches would not be able to revive their identity after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Benedykt Dybowski, a naturalist and doctor, the researcher of Lake Baikal, the Far East and Kamchatka was one of these explorers. Being in exile, he began his research in Siberia in 1865. It started near Sivakova not far from Chita, then continued in Da- rasunia on the slopes of the Yablonovy Mountains and in the village of Kultuk on the Baikal Lake. Then he investigated the Amur, Ussuriysk and Nadmorski areas, conduc- ted fauna research in the Onon and Argun river valleys, crossed the northern part of the Mongolian Chubsugul lake, traveled along the Argun and Amur, reached the lakes of Chanka and Vladivostok, and finally got to know the fauna of the Ussuri River. Even before he began working at the Department of Zoology of Lviv University, and after obtaining a permit for returning to Poland, he carried out an expedition to Kamchatka and nearby Commander Islands including the Bering Island. It was too much for one person, several biographies could have been written abo- ut his life. When he was arrested for underground activity, he was imprisoned in the X Pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel and sentenced to death by hanging, he was to be 9 forgotten by the history. The death penalty was changed to 12 years of exile, which paradoxically opened a new chapter of life before Dybowski, the fruits of which we still benefit from. I would like to thank the conference organizers and editors of this publication devo- ted to this extraordinary person for taking up issues that are so important both for science and for the history of our nation.
