Students will be provided performance and classroom opportunities not typically offered at the high school level. The Instrumental strand offers a program which exceeds state and national music standards and is led by faculty artists who are dedicated to a high standard of excellence and integrity in Instrumental music, as well as being professional performers in their field. The program offers a structured curriculum aimed at developing and advancing skills in instrumental technique, musical literacy, and musical expression/creativity through diverse experiences in musical performance. In addition, students will be able to study and participate in areas such as: conducting, world music and culture, music history, music technology, composition and arranging, musician health/anatomy/physiology. __________________________________________________ HOW TO APPLY Application Process can be found at the following link: https://academyapplication.vbcps.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f Complete the application on-line for the art area(s) in which you are interested in auditioning by Friday, January 8, 2021. If you do not have access to a computer and internet, please contact your Homeschool Guidance Department for assistance. You will be notified via email of the virtual audition process, including a link to submit videos and a link to schedule a time for your live Zoom sight reading audition. Sight Reading appointments will be in mid February. Please email Mr. Kalinauskas to rescheDule your sight reaDing appointment (for extenuating circumstances only). __________________________________________________ AUDITION PROCESS The audition experience is similar to that of Junior District Band, Junior District Orchestra, and Solo & Ensemble. Because of COVID-19 and health and safety guidelines, all auditions will be virtual. Students will record a video, unedited and without splices, and submit via a link (to be sent out after registration). The videos will be shared with a panel of judges and will be graded on various instrument-specific techniques and literacy skills. Students will all be required to read a sight reading etude (live, via Zoom), as well as perform a prepared solo of their choice (see specifications below). To best prepare, students should have a reliable recording device (cell phone works great) and be shown fully in frame. Sight reading appointments are asked to log-in 10 minutes before their audition time and should be on a device with a large screen for reading music comfortably (laptop or Chromebook). While this is not a formal audition, appropriate dress is expected (smart casual). Eligible instruments into the Academy are core MS Band/Orchestra instruments (winds, brass, and percussion). We do not Rock Band instrument such as accept drum set, electric guitar, or electric bass. In order to maximize students learning and engagement, Piano and Classical Guitar are accepted as a secondary instrument only, however students must pass a successful audition on their core band/orchestra instrument. Prepared solos for piano or guitar must be a classical piece from the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), or Trinity College exam lists, minimum of Grade 4. Work with your music teacher to explore these pieces, which can be found in their syllabi on their websites. o ABRSM: https://us.abrsm.org/en/our-exams/ o RCM: https://www.rcmusic.com/learning/examinations/academic-resources-and-policies/syllabi-look-any-syllabus-below o Trinity College: https://www.trinitycollege.com/qualifications/music/grade-exams Woodwinds, Brass, Strings Band students will be asked to play two major scales and their chromatic scale; Strings will be asked two major scales and a melodic minor scale; All instruments will be asked to perform the prepared piece, and a separate live sight reading via Zoom. All range, rhythms, and tempo requirements are taken from the latest VBODA II Junior District specifications. All scales are to be performed from memory. Since neither Junior SRO or Junior District Band were not offered this year, students may choose to perform a prepared solo from this folder (for their respective instrument) or from the VBODA Music List, minimum level 3. Percussion Students will be asked to play two major scales (memorized), their chromatic scale (memorized), three snare rudiments, prepared piece, and a separate live sight reading via Zoom. The audition is broken into two areas of technique, mallet and snare drum. All range, rhythm, and tempo requirements are based on the latest VBODA II Junior District requirements. Sight reading will incorporate both mallets and snare drum. Since neither Junior SRO or Junior District Band were not offered this year, students may choose to perform a prepared solo from this folder (for their respective instrument) or from the VBODA Music List, minimum level 3 (ignoring any Timpani sections). o Mallets: Students will be asked to play two major scales and their chromatic scale o Snare Drum: Students will be asked to perform three rudiments from the Percussive Arts Society “40 Rudiments” o All rudiments open-closed-open o Double Stroke Roll, Single Paradiddle, Flam Tap Piano (Secondary instrument only, must pass audition on primary) Students will be asked to play two major scales (memorized, two octaves, hands together, parallel motion), their chromatic scale (C to C, two octaves, hands together, parallel motion), a harmonic progression (I-IV-I-V7-I) in three keys, and a live sight reading via Zoom. Prepared solos must be a classical selection from the ABSRM, RCM, or Trinity College exam lists, minimum Grade 4 (see above for links to lists). Guitar (Secondary instrument only, must pass audition on primary Students will be asked to play two major scales (memorized) using the full range of the instrument, starting on the 6th string. In addition, students will be asked to play various chord shapes including 1st position “CAGED” shapes, and Barre chords on the E and A strings. Students will be asked to read a live sight reading via Zoom which incorporates written notation and lead sheet style examples. A prepared solo must be a classical selection from the ABRSM, RCM, or Trinity College exam lists, minimum Grade 4 (see above for links to lists). .
