The Reagan Legacy Foundation Liberty Education Tours US Tour 2011 Washington D.C. • Illinois • Southern California August 1-14, 2011 The U.S. Tour begins Tuesday, August 2nd for 13 days and 12 nights. Prior to our departure, each student will receive a copy of our Reagan Legacy Foundation’s Readings and Reflections on the Legacy of Freedom as well as an Educational Syllabus and Personal Journal. There will be daily discussion groups during the tour centered on these materials. There will be an emphasis on tangible and meaningful experiences, and for the students to form an emotional and intellectual investiture in perpetuating the principles of freedom and liberty President Ronald Reagan held so dear. Day 1: Students travel to Washington D.C. After settling into our hotel and dinner at Union Station we will participate in our first discussion group centered on our book of Readings and Reflections and Educational Syllabus. Days 2: U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, Mt. Vernon Our day begins with a VIP tour of the U.S. Capitol and then a visit to the Supreme Court Building to listen to the Justices hear oral arguments. In the afternoon we will tour Mt. Ver- non, home of our nation’s first president, George Washing- ton. U.S. Capitol. Washington D.C. Day 3: White House, Arlington National Cemetery, Ford’s Theatre, and other sites. Evening illuminated tour of memorials and monuments. We begin the day touring the White House. For more than 200 years, the White House has been more than just the home of the Presidents and their families. Throughout the world, it is recognized as the symbol of the President, of the Presi- dent’s administration, and of the United States. Arlington Na- tional Cemetery was established in 1864 and is where veterans from all the nation’s wars are buried; from the American Revo- lution through Iraq and Afghanistan. We will also visit Ford’s Theatre (the place President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Booth in 1865), the Newseum and Holocaust Muse- ums. In the evening we will embark on an “Illuminated Tour of the Memorials and Monuments” of D.C. Days 4: National Mall We will spend our last day in Washington DC on and around the National Mall visiting the Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and more. We will also Washington Monument visit the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum along with the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Reagan Legacy Foundation: Liberty Education Tours Day 5: Depart for Illinois, Ronald Reagan Day at Wrigley Field where Michael Reagan will throw the “First Pitch” After arriving in Chicago, we will have lunch at the famous Ball Park Buffet across from Wrigley Field. FYI, Wrigley Field was built in 1914 playing host to Major League Baseball for the 97th season and the Cubs for the 95th year. It is the second-oldest ballpark in the majors behind Boston’s Fenway Park (1912). The students will watch Michael Reagan follow in his father’s footsteps when he throws the “First Pitch” at Wrigley Field. In 1988 President Reagan threw out two First Pitches and then participated in the radio broadcast of the game for 1¼ innings. After the game we drive to Dixon, Ronald Reagan’s boyhood hometown. For the next few days we will tour the “Ronald Reagan Trail”, visiting where he was born, grew up and went to college – Reagan’s roots in Illinois. “I am proud of my Illinois roots. This is where I learned about the values of faith and family and work.” - President Reagan, August 20, 1984 Day 6: Tours of Fulton and Tampico, Illinois This morning we visit the Martin House Museum and other sites in Fulton, the town where Ronald Reagan’s parents, Nel- lie and Jack Reagan, were married in 1904. We then travel to the Ronald Reagan Birthplace and Museum in Tampico, where Ronald Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 in an apartment above a bakery (later First National Bank). In the Ronald Reagan’s Boyhood Home, Dixon, IL afternoon we cool off in the hotel pool… We will enjoy Din- ner at Bogey’s restaurant at the Timber Creek Golf Course (formerly Dixon Country Club) were Ronald Reagan was a caddie in his youth. Day 7: Dixon Area Sites We will spend the morning at Lowell Park where Reagan worked as a life guard for seven summers and saved seventy-seven lives. While at the waterfront park stu- dents will be able to hike around the park and tour the Rock River on a pontoon boat. Upon returning to Dixon we will visit Freedom Park (honoring President Reagan and his contributions to the fall of the Berlin Wall) and visit historic sites along “Reagan Way”. After lunch at the Next Picture Show Gallery we visit the Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home and Visitor’s Center where our 40th president played football, worked in the family garden and helped raise rabbits with his older brother, Neil from 1920-1923. Day 8: Eureka College and Reagan Museum, Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum In the fall of 1928 “Dutch”, as Ronald Reagan was known in his youth, enrolled as a freshman at Eureka College and graduated four years later. We will tour the Eureka College campus and Ronald Reagan Museum. We spend the afternoon learning about our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Li- brary and Museum in Springfield studying, among other things, the last months of his presidency, during which he wins re-election, the 13th amendment to the Constitution is passed ending slavery, and the Civil War finally ends. The Reagan Legacy Foundation: Liberty Education Tours Day 9: Travel to Los Angeles, Southern California Travel day from Chicago to Los Angeles to Camarillo. Day 10: Tour of Los Angeles, Hollywood and Beverly Hills, Join with European Tour students, “California Welcome Dinner” We are off early for a VIP tour of Los Angeles, Hol- lywood and Beverly Hills with lunch at the Los An- geles Farm- er’s Market. In the after- noon stu- dent from all three summer of 2011 RLF tours will come together and enjoy an after- noon of swimming, volleyball and relaxing. In the evening we will enjoy a sumptuous “California Welcome Dinner” to kick off the final segment of all three tours. Day 11: Santa Barbara, Reagan Ranch Center, Rancho del Cielo In the morning we drive to the YAF’s Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara for seminars given by outstanding speakers. After lunch we will tour Rancho del Cielo (Ranch in the Sky), also known as the “Western White House”, where President Reagan spent his most treasured days riding his horses, clear- Ronald Reagan and El Alamein 1985 ing brush, and chopping wood. Day 12: Ronald Reagan Presidential Library: Workshops and tours. Evening Farewell Banquet and Graduation Ceremony We spend the day at the Ronald Reagan Presi- dential library participating in workshops and tours. In the evening all students (European and American), parents and guests will partici- pate in the Farewell Banquet and Graduation Rancho del Cielo Ceremony where the students will be awarded Santa Barbara certificates officially identifying them as Free- dom Fellows. Michael Reagan, the President’s son, will entrust them with the charge to represent Ronald Reagan’s legacy in their future endeavors. Day 13: Students depart for home.
