Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 2 ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to investigate whether the Reagan administration was influenced by ‘New Right’ ideas. Foreign policy issues were chosen as test cases because the presidency has more power in this area which is why it could promote an aggressive stance toward the United Nations and encourage withdrawal from UNESCO with little impunity. Chapter 1 deals with American society after 1945. It shows how the ground was set for the rise of Reagan and the New Right as America moved from a strong affinity with New Deal liberalism to a new form of conservatism, which the New Right and Reagan epitomised. Chapter 2 analyses the New Right as a coalition of three distinctive groups: anti-liberals, New Christian Right, and neoconservatives. -

Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen. -

It has done so by investigating Reagan and his administration’s views on the USSR and the nuclear threat during his first term in office and by examining the rhetoric and foreign policies Reagan and his administration undertook in that first term. This was done to create a frame in which the thoughts behind the need for such a defense could become clear. Reagan changed his rhetoric from an aggressive and confrontational nature into a tone that was more open towards discussion between the United States and the Soviet Union. Thereby, showing that Reagan feared the possible consequences of a nuclear war and thought of the SDI as a way of making nuclear weapons impotent and obsolete. -

Moodie 3 The Iran-Contra Affair An Interview with Dr. David Abshire By William Moodie Alexando^ Hai^t February 12.2007 Moodie 4 Statement of Purpose United States presidents face challenges on a daily basis and they are forced to make decisions regarding a multitude of issues that could affect the lives of millions of people. President Ronald Reagan faced one of these challenges during the second term of his presidency when he was confronted with news that his administration had covered up illegal procedures regarding weapon sales to Iranimi terrorists and illegal funding of Nicaraguan Contras. The purpose of this oral history project is to gain extensive knowledge of how the President's administration hmidled the Iran-Contra scandal, through an interview with Dr. David Abshire. Interviewing Dr. Abshire, who was a key special advisor to President Reagmi during the investigation, will provide a lesson in civility, truth, and honesty in difficult times. Moodie 5 Biography Dr. David Manker Abshire was bom on April 11, 1926 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he lived until he was accepted at The United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1951 and then fought in the Korean War as a Company Commander. Upon returning home, he became an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, from which he established a small non-profit organization in 1962, called the Center for Strategic mid International Studies (CSIS) (He received his doctorate in History from Georgetown University). Dr. Abshire served as an Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations from 1970 to 1973. -

ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: The President’s Pen: A Literary History of American Presidential Autobiographies Allen Fletcher Cole, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Robert Levine, Department of English Approximately half of American presidents have produced either a full or partial narrative record of their lives, and recent presidential autobiographies have been released to full-scale media attention. Yet, despite the genre’s familiarity, there has been no comprehensive analysis of this set of presidential autobiographies. The goal of this project is to examine a selected number of presidential memoirs in order to chart the development of this genre. Aside from considering the merits of the individual texts through extended readings, this dissertation will trace the history of the publication, marketing, and reception of these texts. In addition, it will trace the formal changes and development of the presidential memoir in the context of the changing relationships between the president and the American people, popular conceptions of public and private, and the confluence of politics and celebrity. In order to achieve these goals, the dissertation is arranged chronologically and centers on selected texts that mark the genre’s evolution. The first chapters are devoted to the earliest presidential autobiographies, those of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe. These three works demonstrate a careful delineation between public and private and ostensibly serve public ends. The second chapter focuses on books by James Buchanan and Ulysses Grant, both of whom sought to market their life narratives in order to reach the broadest possible audience. The third chapter takes up the autobiographies of Theodore Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge, two presidents who used the expansion of technology to project carefully constructed public characters to the American electorate. -

Pach This dissertation examines how 1980s antinuclear activists utilized popular culture to criticize the Reagan administration’s arms buildup. The 1970s and the era of détente marked a decade-long nadir for American antinuclear activism. Ronald Reagan’s rise to the presidency in 1981 helped to usher in the “Second Cold War,” a period of reignited Cold War animosities that rekindled atomic anxiety. As the arms race escalated, antinuclear activism surged. Alongside grassroots movements, such as the nuclear freeze campaign, a unique group of antinuclear activists—including publishers, authors, directors, musicians, scientists, and celebrities—challenged Reagan’s military buildup in American mass media and popular culture. These activists included Fate of the Earth author Jonathan Schell, Day After director Nicholas Meyer, and “nuclear winter” scientific-spokesperson Carl Sagan. -

National Press Club Archives In the week following his first triumph in a campaign for public office—a stunning two-to-one victory in the Republican primary for governor of California— Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) traveled east to confer with the national party chairman, California’s Republican representatives in Congress, and leading industrialists. Not only had Reagan become the favorite in his bid to unseat two- term Democratic Governor Edmund G. “Pat” Brown, politicians and pundits now considered him a major national figure and future contender for the presidency. Feared as an extremist by some, Reagan visited former President Dwight D. Eisenhower at his farm in Gettysburg and gained his support. One day later, Reagan appeared before a capacity crowd at the National Press Club in Washington, where he delivered, in the opinion of a Los Angeles Times reporter, a “witty, deft, engaging performance in his debut in one of the capital’s chief forums.” This period of Reagan’s political ascendancy coincided with the beginning stages of a seismic shift in American politics: the decline of modern liberalism and entrance of the conservative right into the political mainstream. Two years earlier, President Lyndon B. Johnson had trounced conservative Senator Barry Goldwater after a raucous Republican convention split the party into warring factions. Democrats secured resounding majorities in both the House and 1 Senate. With a clear mandate, Johnson began his new term with the announcement, “We’re on our way to the Great Society,” invoking the near- utopian vision for the U.S. -

For the commander-in-chief, his first inauguration represented the culmination of a life and career dedicated to the pursuit of a better future for himself, his country, and, ultimately, the entire globe. Born on February 6, 1911, in an obscure flat in Tampico, Illinois, Reagan learned from an early age that the world held no guarantees, and in order to survive and triumph, he would have to rely on his unbridled optimism, perseverance, and a little bit of luck. His father, Jack Reagan, was an Irish-American Catholic who spent most of his life as a store clerk and failed businessman. -

Young Ronald Reagan forms the West Side Alley Gang. c. 1920, Dixon, Ill.: The Reagan family moves to Dixon. 1927, Dixon: Ronald Reagan becomes a life guard at Lowell Park in the summer of 1927. He works there for six summers from 1927-1932, often working 12-hour days. His duties include carrying heavy blocks of ice from nine blocks away to the concession stand. 1928, Dixon: Ronald Reagan graduates from Dixon High School. 1928, Eureka, Ill.: Ronald Reagan attends Eureka College, joining the football team and the TKE drama fraternity. 1932, Davenport, Iowa: Ronald Reagan broadcasts from the WOC Radio studio where he was hired by Peter MacArthur, State Center ILLINOIS program director. Cedar Rapids Dixon 39 1933, Des Moines, Iowa: Ronald Reagan takes the microphone at WHO, Des Moines, in the spring of 1933. Reagan, then California governor, visits alma mater Eureka College. He receives the key to the city Des Moines Sept. 28, 1967, Eureka: Quad-Cities from former classmate and president of the Chamber of Commerce, John Kraus.
