Kam Williams, “The “12 Years a Slave” Interview: Steve McQueen”, The new journal and guide, February 03, 2014 Artist and filmmaker Steven Rodney McQueen was born in London on October 9, 1969. His critically-acclaimed directorial debut, Hunger, won the Camera d’Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. He followed that up with the incendiary offering Shame, a well- received, thought-provoking drama about addiction and secrecy in the modern world. In 1996, McQueen was the recipient of an ICA Futures Award. A couple of years later, he won a DAAD artist’s scholarship to Berlin. Besides exhibiting at the ICA and at the Kunsthalle in Zürich, he also won the coveted Turner Prize. He has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Documenta, and at the 53rd Venice Biennale as a representative of Great Britain. His artwork can be found in museum collections around the world like the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Centre Pompidou. In 2003, he was appointed Official War Artist for the Iraq War by the Imperial War Museum and he subsequently produced the poignant and controversial project Queen and Country commemorating the deaths of British soldiers who perished in the conflict by presenting their portraits as a sheet of stamps. Steve and his wife, cultural critic Bianca Stigter, live and work in Amsterdam which is where they are raising their son, Dexter, and daughter, Alex. Here, he talks about his latest film, 12 Years a Slave, which has been nominated for 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Contact: [email protected] Somewhere in the Night (Fox Home Entertainment, 9.6.2005) Unlike the other two recent entries in Fox’s film noir series, The House on 92nd Street and Whirlpool, Somewhere in the Night is unequivocally the real thing. With Norbert Brodine’s atmospheric lighting, rain-slicked streets (though set in Los Angeles), a swanky nightclub, a sultry torch singer, a villain with a foreign accent, a muscle-bound lug, and moral ambiguity to burn, Somewhere in the Night is a terrific example of the genre. George Taylor (John Hodiak) wakes up in a military field hospital in the Pacific with no memory of who he is. Returning to Los Angeles, Taylor, who instinctively knows this is not his real name, finds an old letter from his friend Larry Cravat and tries to track down Cravat to find out who he really his. With the help of singer Christy Smith (Nancy Guild), nightclub owner Mel Phillips (Richard Conte), and cop Lt. Donald Kendall (Lloyd Nolan), Taylor learns that Cravat and another man were involved in stealing $2 million in loot shipped to the United States by a Nazi officer.

The Museum Of Modem Art For Immediate Release June 1987 PARAMOUNT PICTURES: 75 YEARS July 10, 1987 - January 4, 1988 Marlene Dietrich, William Holden, Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray, and Mae West are among the stars featured in the exhibition PARAMOUNT PICTURES: 75 YEARS, which opens at The Museum of Modern Art on July 10. The series includes films by such directors as Cecil B. De Mille, Ernst Lubitsch, Francis Coppola, Josef von Sternberg, and Preston Sturges. More than 100 films and an accompanying display of film-still enlargements and original posters trace the seventy-five year history of Paramount through the silent and sound eras. The exhibition begins on Friday, July 10, at 6:00 p.m. with Dorothy Arzner's The Wild Party (1929), madcap silent star Clara Bow's first sound feature, costarring Fredric March. At 2:30 p.m. on the same day, Ernst Lubitsch's ribald musical comedy The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) will be screened, featuring Paramount contract stars Maurice Chevalier, Claudette Colbert, and Miriam Hopkins. Comprised of both familiar classics and obscure features, the series continues in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters through January 4, 1988. Paramount Pictures was founded in 1912 by Adolph Zukor, and its first release was the silent Queen Elizabeth, starring Sarah Bernhardt. 7th Heaven By Aubrey Solomon In the years between 1926 and 1928, Hollywood ex- perienced a maturation which blended art and indus- try to a new level of cinema. Influenced heavily by the experiments of foreign talents, largely German, new concepts of cinematography, lighting, set de- sign, and special effects known as “trick shots,” per- meated American film-making methods. The somber and sometimes morbid themes of German cinema also seeped into their films, often to the chagrin of American exhibitors who preferred their own exuber- ant optimism and happy endings. “7th Heaven” characterizes a perfect blend of opti- mistic romantic fantasy and German influenced pro- duction design. It also became one of the most pop- ular films of the late silent era.
