Sailing School 2020 SEATTLE YACHT CLUB SAILING SCHOOL 2020 Open to Non-Members www.SeattleYachtClub.org Class Descriptions Classes are distinguished by boat type, sailor age, and sometimes sailor weight. All classes are suitable for beginner sailors. Lil’ Luffers Ages: 7-9 Boats: Vanguard 15 or 420 This class introduces our youngest sailors to fun and safety on the water in an unintimidating way. Students sail with one or two peers and an instructor in a Vanguard 15 or 420 sailboat, allowing for hands-on learning with instructor guid- ance close by. This class covers sailing terminology, indicators of wind direction, rigging basics, tacking & jibing, steering with a tiller, and other foundational boating skills through fun games and activities. Honing skills learned throughout the week, students may earn the chance to sail an Opti on the last day of class. Overboard Optis Ages: 8-12 Boats: Optimist Our most popular class, Overboard Optis offers students a chance to learn or expand their knowledge of sailing as well as gain confidence sailing solo. Throughout the week, students learn about Opti rigging, basic sail trim, launch- ing & docking, tacking & jibing, righting a capsize, and more through a variety of fun activities. While Overboard Optis is many students' first time sailing solo, instructors can offer advanced instruction for more experienced sailors. Junior Jibers Ages: 10-13 Boats: Vanguard 15 or Laser This class is an excellent opportunity for students to learn to sail or improve their skills as a sailor and team player. Students sail with a peer in a Vanguard 15 or solo in a Laser, and may switch between boats. This class is suitable for all levels of experience. Please note weight minimum of 100 lbs. because it allows for comfortable and safe handling of a Vanguard 15 or Laser. Overboard Optis is a great alternative if your sailor does not meet the weight minimum. High School Ages: 14-17 Boats: Vanguard 15 or Laser This class is similar to Junior Jibers, but catered towards students in or entering High School. Students sail with a friend in a Vanguard 15 or solo in a Laser, and may switch between boats. At the beginning of the session, the class may be broken up into groups based on skill level. In some segments of the class, all skill levels will sail together so they can have fun and learn from their peers. A variety of skills will be covered and this class is suitable for all levels of experience. LEARN-TO-RACE CAMP Optimist:Ages 9-13 Vanguard 15*: Ages 10-17 Laser*: Ages 13-17 July 6-10 only For one week each summer, Sailing School focuses on introducing students to sailboat racing in an unintimidating way. Classes are divided by boat type, each covering rules of racing, typical race courses, starting, basic racing tactics, and more. The week concludes with a fun regatta. Must have taken at least 1 class at SYC Sailing School, or be comfortable demonstrating basic sailing maneuvers including steering, tacking/jibing, and docking. *Weight minimum 100 lbs. Sailing shoes, Aqua Socks or Teva-type sandals are okay. Flip-flop sandals not recommended. • Bring lunch or plan to purchase lunch from the SYC Snack Shack. Every Student Will Receive… • Photos commemorating their experience. • Certificate to recognize course completion. • T-shirt with 2020 Summer Sailing School design. • Little Red Book. This book is part of U.S. Sailing’s certification system. As the sailors progress, instructors will sign off on the skills Kick-Off Barbeque Monday, June 22, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. $15 per person See the boat your child will be sailing and meet the instructors! Burgers, hot dogs, and salad will be served on the lawn at SYC. The summer sailing staff will be on hand to introduce themselves and answer questions about the SYC Sailing School. Instructors SYC’s Sailing School instructors are experienced sailors, and hold a US Sailing Level 1 Instructor certification. Low & Jessica Zacher Pandya Abstract: In this article we highlight analyses conducted in two qualitative literacy studies to discuss various implications of a blended, or hybrid, approach to multimodal analysis. By investigating several prominent frameworks commonly used together for the purpose of analyzing multimodal data, and describing our own experiences blending these frameworks, we determine& that a hybrid approach is not necessarily ineffective at producing data interpretations, but that it is insufficiently reflexive of the role researcher positionality plays in multimodal analysis. We conclude the article by offering recommendations for supplementing hybrid analytical approaches through data co-construction and increased attention to researcher positionality. You may have to raise the line bags to locate the eyestraps. Make sure your knot is very tight; shockcord easily unties itself. Assembling the mast The mast comes already rigged except for the spreaders, which are taped to the mast. Remove all tape, and untie the halyards; secure them loosely around the mast so they won’t be lost when stepping. Before you install the spreaders, make sure the hoist end of the main halyard (which comes off the aft side of the masthead sheave) is aft of the spreader brackets and all other rigging is forward.

    Blast Reaching at the NSW States Photos Neil Waterman © Volume 153 June 2006 NS14 Bulletin President’s Message First of all I would like to introduce myself to those who don’t know me as by virtue of being elected NSW President I am also the National President under the current constitution. This will change under the proposed revisions to the constitution whereby the President will be elected. I have been in NSs for 20 years mainly based at Northbridge although I have moved in and out of the Association as Hugh and Penny’s boat interests have changed (eg FAs, Lasers, MGs, 29ers, 16’ skiffs, and yachts). This has allowed me to have some exposure as to how other classes are run. For the last couple of seasons we have had three NSs in the family and I am keen to see the class get back to the strength it had a number of years ago. In this context I would like to outline a number of actions I think we need to take to help rejuvenate the class and bring the numbers participating at a class level back to where we used to be. There is no doubt there is a lot more competition for people’s time nowadays, but I feel that we have an opportunity to position this class as a great way for people to use the time they have. The key challenges are to get people sailing in regattas and to get people building new boats again. First, I think we need to market the NS14 using the strengths of the class to demonstrate that this class will suit a broad spectrum of sailors.

    2019 One Design Classes and Sailor Survey [email protected] One Design Classes and Sailor Survey One Design sailing is a critical and fundamental part of our sport. In late October 2019, US Sailing put together a survey for One Design class associations and sailors to see how we can better serve this important constituency. The survey was sent via email, as a link placed on our website and through other USSA Social media channels. The survey was sent to our US Sailing members, class associations and organizations, and made available to any constituent that noted One-Design sailing in their profile. Some interesting observations: • Answers are based on respondents’ perception of or actual experience with US Sailing. • 623 unique comments were received from survey respondents and grouped into “Response Types” for sorting purposes • When reviewing data, please note that “OTHER” Comments are as equally important as those called out in a specific area, like Insurance, Administration, etc. • The majority of respondents are currently or have been members of US Sailing for more than 5 years, and many sail in multiple One-Design classes • About 1/5 of the OD respondents serve(d) as an officer of their primary OD class; 80% were owner/drivers of their primary OD class; and more than 60% were members of their primary OD class association. • Respondents to the survey were most highly concentrated on the East and West coasts, followed by the Mid- West and Texas – though we did have representation from 42 states, plus Puerto Rico and Canada. • Most respondents were male.
