Norbury Hollow Level Crossing and Lever Frame are situated at Milepost 3.60.

The signaller is able to listen in to bell codes between Hazel Grove and Furness Vale but not interact with them. In the up direction, the IBH signal (HG26) is controlled by Hazel Grove but will not clear until confirmed by Norbury Hollow. This is achieved when the signaller closes the gates and then replaces a brown “slot” lever into the frame. He then pulls the confirmation lever for HG26 which places the signal at clear. It will not clear unless both HG and NH concur with each other and will return to danger if either boxes return the controlling lever. In the Down direction, Norbury Hollow controls two semaphore signals— a distant (NY4) and protecting the crossing, a home signal (NY3). Upon seeing “Train on Line” from Furness Vale to Hazel Grove, the signaller waits for an indication from an enunciator which is positioned at the down exit of bridge 21 on the approach to Disley station. Again after closing the gates, the brown “slot” lever is placed back into the frame thus unlocking the signals and allowing them to be cleared. The gates will always be kept closed to road traffic until a train required to stop has come to a stand at NY3

PASSING SIGNALS AT DANGER

Authority to pass HG 26 will be given by HAZEL GROVE.

Authority to pass NY 3 will be given by the crossing keeper at NORBURY HOLLOW.

After having received verbal authority to pass either of these signals at danger you may receive a yellow hand signal from Norbury Hollow crossing keeper. As of the June amendments to the Rule Book this is no longer needed.

Network Rail will be carrying out a risk assessment on the method of work at Norbury Hollow and when it is complete this page will be amended accordingly

Local Instructions Trains detained at Norbury Hollow must first try to contact Hazel Grove box by using the SPT. If it has failed, the driver must try the phone at Norbury Hollow box. If that phone has also failed, the driver must ensure the gates are secure before passing the signal at danger in accordance with Rulebook Module S5 Part B Section 2. Norbury Hollow
