    The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair­ banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

He was revered as a great mathematician and physicist, an inventor, and the greatest prose stylist in the French language. He was a defender of religious freedom and an apologist of the Christian faith. He was born June 19, 1623, at Clermont, the capital of Auvergne, which was a small town of about nine thousand inhabitants. He was born to Etienne and Antoinette Pascal. Blaise had two sisters, Gilberte, born in 1620, and Jacqueline, born in 1625. Blaise was born into a very influential family.

    California Teachers Association Advocate for Students and Public Education

    HONOREE CALIFORNIA TEACHERS ASSOCIATION ADVOCATE FOR STUDENTS AND PUBLIC EDUCATION The California Teachers Association is the state’s larg- est professional employee union, representing more than 325,000 public school teachers, counselors, psychologists, social workers, librarians, nurses and education support professionals, among others. It has become one of the nation’s strongest advocates for students and educators, and is also a leading proponent of civil rights and economic equality. CTA has been a strong supporter of living wage policies, including LAANE’s 2008 LAX hotel living wage law. CTA has won many landmark victories in its 150-year his- tory, from legislation providing free public schools and free textbooks for all of California’s children to laws banning child labor in the state. In the 1940s, the union was one of a handful of organizations to protest the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. CTA led the critical campaign in 1988 to pass Prop. 98, the law guaranteeing minimum funding for K-12 schools and community colleges. CTA also played a pivotal role in defeating Gov. Schwarzeneg- ger’s 2005 ballot initiatives that would have cut school funding, undermined the due-process rights of educators and silenced the voices of public employees. Last year, CTA led the fight to pass Gov. Jerry Brown’s Proposition 30, which stopped $6 billion in education cuts to schools and colleges and will generate $47 billion for public schools, colleges and other essential services over the next seven years.

Beyond providing for our national security, the military installations in Oklahoma (Altus AFB, Fort Sill, McAlester Army Ammu- nition Plant, Tinker AFB, and Vance AFB) have a tremendous economic impact in the state. They are economic engines that employ Oklahomans. Illustrating the importance of these installations: • Over 69,100 military personnel, federal civilian personnel and contractors were employed at Oklahoma’s military installations in FY 2010. • These jobs, and the operations at the installations, supported an additional 64,700 jobs in Oklahoma’s economy for a total employment impact of more than 133,800 jobs in the state. • Impacts on Oklahoma’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is value-added economic activity, totaled more than $9.6 billion in FY 2010, which was more than 7% of the size of the state’s entire economy.

Bertelsmann will own 53 percent, Pearson 47 percent. The closing of the transaction is scheduled to take place in the second half of 2013, following regulatory approval. The announcement of the combination was made today in Gütersloh, Germany by Thomas Rabe, Chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann, and in London by Marjorie Scardino, Chief Executive of Pearson. Upon closing, Markus Dohle, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Random House worldwide, will be CEO of the new group. John Makinson, Chairman and CEO of Penguin, will become Chairman of the Board of Directors. Additional senior executive appointments will be announced in due course. Bertelsmann will appoint five representatives to the group's Board of Directors, Pearson four. The new name will be Penguin Random House. Until the closing, the companies will maintain their current separate operations and continue conducting business independently. The new publishing group will include all the publishing divisions and imprints of Random House and Penguin in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, as well as Penguin's publishing company in China, and Random House's Spanish-language publishing operations in Spain and Latin America.
