Staff Report

Leaders at the Ohio departments of agriculture and health are reminding everyone to practice good hygiene when visiting live- stock exhibits this summer. “Ohio’s fairs are great places to enjoy some sum- mer fun, but visitors should remember some illnesses can be directly transmit- ted between animals and humans,” said Ohio Depart- ment of Health director Lance Himes. “Simple steps like good hand-washing can help stop the spread of any illness and make sure your fair visit is a safe one.” Visitors should always wash their hands with soap and water before and after petting or touching any ani- mal. Frequent hand-washing can lower your risk of get- ting sick from influenza, sal- monella, e. Coli, and other illnesses. Never eat, drink or put anything in your mouth in animal areas. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to leave strollers outside the animal exhibits and carry small children. Older adults, pregnant women, young children, and people with weakened immune systems should consider avoiding animal areas. “Fairs are the highlight of the summer in many com- munities for many families across Ohio and we want to ensure they stay that way,” said Ohio Department of Agriculture director David Daniels. “Maintaining healthy people and animals is our top priority, and we the fair.” monitor fair livestock and their animal may be sick who experience illness encourage all fair guests to In addition, Ohio’s fair poultry for clinical signs of should immediately contact should contact a medical follow posted signs and make veterinarians are trained illness. their barn manager and fair professional and their local smart decisions when visiting and encouraged to closely Exhibitors who believe veterinarian. Cool fair animal trivia!

Some horse owners have claimed their horses can do simple addition and subtraction, the most famous example being Clever Hans. Psychologists have debunked the idea, saying horses weren’t doing math, just watching their owners’ reactions and picking up on their cues. A male guinea pig is called a boar and a female is called a sow, just like regular pigs. We’re pretty sure neither actually speaks pig Latin.

Goats live about 15 years, and their age can be very accurately determined by their teeth, since their permanent incisors come through at specific ages. 14 Monday, August 14, 2017 LORAIN COUNTY FAIR 2017 Oberlin News-Tribune 41009755 Oberlin News-Tribune LORAIN COUNTY FAIR 2017 Monday, August 14, 2017 15 41009755 16 Monday, August 14, 2017 LORAIN COUNTY FAIR 2017 Oberlin News-Tribune 41010782 Oberlin News-Tribune LORAIN COUNTY FAIR 2017 Monday, August 14, 2017 17 Avian Bowl Senior Team headed to nationals Staff Report Donald Crawford of Wellington and Captain Lau- Justin Banaska of ren Fox of North LaGrange.
