  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

The Independent – Student – News http://www.independent.co.uk/student/news/bournemouth-graduates-celebrating-oscar- glory-for-their-work-on-gravity-9168893.html Bournemouth graduates celebrating Oscar glory for their work on 'Gravity' by JOE NERSSESSIAN on Tuesday 04 March 2014 Graduates from two Bournemouth Universities are celebrating this week after Gravity picked up seven Oscars at Sunday’s ceremony. 50 Animation and Film graduates from Bournemouth University (BU) and Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) worked on the visual effects part of the film for London-based company, Framestore. The work undertaken by the graduates was specifically recognised as the movie claimed a technical award for Visual Effects, and also won a BAFTA in the same category last month. Framestore, whose senior representatives collected the Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, are world leaders in visual effects and have an outpost on the AUB campus, where some of the work was completed. The outpost is “very important” to students' development, according to the lecturer in animation at BU, Adam Redford, who also spent six months working on the film. “It can be a great opportunity for graduates to get their first job, and first taste of proper industry experience by working there,” Adam told The Bournemouth Rock. ”I felt really proud to have been involved in a film that won so many awards, especially for the visual effects. It’s a good feeling to know that you have had some input, however small, into something that has been received so positively by the visual effects community and the general public,” said Adam.

DVDs and DVD Extras That Help Teach The Language of Film Copyright 2010, by Frank W. Baker – Media Literacy Clearinghouse This page is not intended to be an exhaustive, all-inclusive list, but rather a list of some DVDs that I am aware of and have watched that I think could be used in classes where “film literacy” and “film fluency” is being taught. There’s nothing like reading a book about film, but viewing, analyzing and deconstructing are best when you have access to films, and extras, that will help your students better understand the languages of film. The spectacle of high- velocity 3D detritus raging past terror-struck, puny-looking astronauts stranded in space turned the Earth’s orbit into not only a site of horror but also a wasteland of hyperobjects,[1] with discarded electronics and satellite parts threatening everything that lies in the path of their ballistic whirl (see Figure 1). While the film made no environmental commentary on the long-term effect of space debris on communication systems or the broader ecological problem of long-lasting waste materials, it nevertheless projected a harrowing vision of technological breakdown, which found a thrilling articulation in the projectile aesthetics of stereoscopic cinema.

CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE FILM REVIEW AGGREGATORS AND THEIR EFFECT ON SUSTAINED BOX OFFICE PERFORMANCE SUBMITTED TO PROFESSOR DARREN FILSON AND DEAN GREGORY HESS BY NICHOLAS KRISHNAMURTHY FOR SENIOR THESIS FALL / 2011 November 28, 2011 Acknowledgements I would like to thank my parents for their constant support of my academic and career endeavors, my brother for his advice throughout college, and my friends for always helping to keep things in perspective. I would also like to thank Professor Filson for his help and support during the development and execution of this thesis. Abstract This thesis will discuss the emerging influence of film review aggregators and their effect on the changing landscape for reviews in the film industry. Specifically, this study will look at the top 150 domestic grossing films of 2010 to empirically study the effects of two specific review aggregators. A time-delayed approach to regression analysis is used to measure the influencing effects of these aggregators in the long run. Subsequently, other factors crucial to predicting film success are also analyzed in the context of sustained earnings.
