PROGRAMME - Spring 2020

10th March- When God Calls-I’m Not Listening! -Becky Hancock

7th April - From Copper to Shepherd - Sue Woodcock

‘Villages Together’ meetings are usually held on every 4th Tuesday afternoon. A nominal charge of £3 is made per session which includes tea or coffee and biscuits. Do come and join us in Mattersey Church Hall (unless otherwise stated) at a usual starting time of 1.45pm. Villages Together is supported by Blue Skies Community Initiative Telephone Sue Hughes on 01777-818880 or 07921-132889 for further information. In February we were entertained by Pat Hodges who sang songs from the 1940s and 50s. Her humorous anecdotes made for a very enjoy- able afternoon. Her background story is truly inspirational. Following an horrendous accident in a shop and subsequent brain injury she turned her life around by using her singing voice to help herself as well as others, particularly those with dementia, in various parts of the UK . People look forward to her visits and she feels rewarded by seeing others enjoy and benefit from the old songs whose words they can recall. 7

THANK YOU …

Just before Christmas a request was made for donations to gifts for young people leaving care. Mattersey residents very kindly sent a box of gifts and Cty Cllr Tracey Taylor has sent the following:

“I’m sharing the thank you message as received, but I’d like to add my own thanks to all of you who took this request to heart and supported it with such generosity and enthusiasm. The number and range of gifts was remarkable, and very well received by the young people, as evidenced by the comments/quotes included below. Thank you all so very much.”……..

The response to the appeal exceeded all expectations; all care leavers received at least one special gift and chocolates. We were also able to donate some spare gifts to our local semi-independent accommodation providers for young people.

The gifts were very well thought-out and perfect for the age range of our care leavers. The response from the care leavers was very positive, with comments including:

"Thank you – I LUV my present" and "Thank you so much - I have eaten the chocolate already!"

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for the Christmas presents they were amazing…I was not expecting anything like that they were lovely I feel awful I would have gotten you something if I'd had enough money. Thank you again” 11

BASSETLAW LOCAL PLAN

Unfortunately by the time you receive this newsletter the consultation period will have ended for the Local Plan (26th Feb) but below is a brief resume of the most important features:

 A minimum of 9,087 homes need to be built in Bassetlaw by 2037  47 rural settlements will grow by up to 20% and able to grow further with local community involvement  Neighbourhood Plans will continue to provide communities with the opportunity to influence development in their local area – Mattersey & Mattersey Thorpe Neighbourhood Plan has already been adopted  Cottam Power station site will create a new large rural settlement  The former High Marnham Power station is proposed for renewable energy generation and low carbon related uses  There will be a new Garden Village east of A1/A57 junction at Upper Morton More details can be found on the District Council website: https://www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/media/5315/draft-bassetlaw-local-plan- 2020-final.pdf

PARISH COUNCIL BUDGET

The budget has now been confirmed by the Parish Council and the tax base from the District Council have enabled the calculations to be made for the effect on Band D properties. The figure amounts to £55.59.

This will allow the Parish Council to carry out essential works to the cemetery, Millennium Green, maintain the grass verges, preserve the War Memorial clock within the Church, plant flower tubs, support local groups, maintain relevant insurance, audit and admin costs, represent the residents’ views on consultations, ensure the clerk and councillors receive appropriate training and have sufficient funds to react to unexpected events.

FLY TIPPING – HELP PUT A STOP TO IT

Rural areas are becoming increasingly blighted by fly tipping and the costs of clearing it up are increasing. The District Council are keen to ensure offenders are prosecuted and need residents’ help. If you see anything suspicious please make a note of the registration number of the vehicle. With the latest ANPR cameras any vehicle can be tracked. Fly tipping is a serious crime which carries a fine of up to £50,000, up to five years in jail, seizure of vehicles – just a taster of what can happen to anyone who fly tips waste. It costs the Council around £100,000 a year to clear up fly tipped waste and dispose of it – a cost passed on to local taxpayers and landowners. Help put a stop to this awful practice. Go to the Council website to report any incidents. Remember also to check that any trader that you employ has a waste carrier’s licence. Householders are now required to check that anyone they allow to remove their waste is authorised to do so. Contact the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 and ask for a waste carriers check – it’s that easy!

CRIME & INCIDENT REPORTING

If you have need to call the Police for a non urgent report Dial 101 : and listen carefully to the automated response to ensure that the call has been correctly routed to the “Nottinghamshire” team. If not, tell the call handler straightaway, in order to be transferred to the correct call centre

13

CAR REGISTRATION REPORTING

Recently, there have been a series of burglaries and thefts in the surrounding villages. Police believe these to have been carried out by West Yorkshire thieves driving into this area and moving around the villages. There is a ring of ANPR cameras on all major roads into Bassetlaw, so if you see a suspicious car, PLEASE REPORT IT. You won’t be wasting anyone’s time, because the ANPR system can automatically search and locate any car registration captured on camera, link them together and identify the burglars’ route, in order to spread the word among neighbouring forces and hopefully catch them. This has worked in the past and with your help could do so again.

15 Beware of the Scammers Scammers are still very active trying to hack our accounts. A recent report (11th Feb) from a Mattersey resident reported that an unsolicited phone call, allegedly from Microsoft, was received looking for a licence-fee payment of £4.95. The “very plausible” caller asked for bank account details....and the resident ended the call. Add this to the frequent reports of calls from “BT” saying your internet is going to be terminated and “Amazon” that your Prime account is about to be charged an annual 39.99 ”subscription fee”. Beware of any phone call from an “organisation” you haven’t initiated contact with and never, never give bank account details out. They are at the very least looking for you to call back on an expensive phone line and in the worst case trying to access your computer and/or bank account. As I write this I have just received an email from “Netflix “ saying they will suspend my membership if I don’t contact them within 72hrs — and I have never ever seen a programme on Netflix ! So suspend me ! (please) Steve Digby — on behalf of a Mattersey resident

NEW #MENTALHEALTHY CAFES TO OPEN IN WORKSOP FOR AFTER-HOURS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT People in Bassetlaw will benefit from an exciting new pilot project of a mental health ‘crisis café’ #MentalHealthy following recent funding from NHS Bassetlaw Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). #MentalHealthy has been set up in partnership with Mind - shire and Talkzone, funded by NHS Bassetlaw CCG to pilot this new venture which will commence on Monday 3rd February 2020. This community based project will be trialled for 12 weeks to offer a drop-in service to support individuals to reduce any immediate crisis they may have, signpost them to local services, and develop a safety plan to improve their resilience to cope at difficult times. Mind Nottinghamshire will run three café sessions per week for the next twelve weeks at The Crossing Centre on Newcastle Street in Worksop on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings during the hours of 5pm – 9pm. The late night cafés will be a ‘mental healthy safe space’ offering support to Bassetlaw people if they find themselves with nowhere else to turn if other services are closed. It will work on a drop-in basis where adults are invited to head along, find a safe space, and get help from mental health professionals without the need for an appointment. Catherine Huby, Head of Urgent & Emergency Care for NHS Bassetlaw CCG said “we are delighted to have the opportunity to test out this new service in the community for the people of Bassetlaw, provide support for people in crisis, and to help reduce social isolation.” “We hope that people at the point of an emerging mental health crisis will contact or come to the #MentalHealthy Café as an alternative to calling 999 or attending A&E.” “The NHS Long Term Plan has reiterated the ambition of the NHS to meet the needs of people who require help when they experience mental ill health. As a CCG we continue to look at opportunities to further improve on the services available to people, and to offer different ways to access services. We know that one size does not fit all.” For more information search ‘Better in Bassetlaw’ on Google or join in on the conversation using #BetterInBassetlaw and #MentalHealthy. 19 ONE KIND OF POVERTY At our February meeting Marian Tasker spoke of the problems of girls and women not being about to source sanitary products in Malawi and Zambia. She has been responsible for setting up workshops in both of these countries making sustainable sanitary wear which can be washed and reused. One of the materials used is made from bamboo. This has been a great success not only enabling girls to be able to attend school every day but also enabling women to make a living and thus support their families. Malawi, in particular, is a very poor country, suffering floods on a regular basis. She is always looking for sewing machines, material, cottons and good sewing scissors to enable her to continue this work. If you could help Marion with any of these items, please let a Wl member know and we will ensure Marion gets them. This is a talk that everyone needs to hear as we are so unaware of these problems for women and girls. At our meeting we also held our AGM and reported in a very busy and enjoyable 2019. We said thank you to Marjorie Gibson and Margaret Wiles for their time on Committee and welcomed Hazel Mellish and Margaret Hustwick who were joining. We also celebrated the 90th birthdays of 2 of our members, Marjorie Campion and Beth Dale. We have a very busy and interesting year planned and always welcome new members and visitors.

EVERTON GARDEN HOLDERS LIVE FAST, DIE YOUNG The wind may have been howling outside and there was snow, rain and floods all-around us, but Everton Gardeners were given a promise of things to come at our meeting in February. Pam Tatum from Hall Farm came with her Live Fast, Die Young talk - all about colourful annuals for our gardens. 20

Slides to cheer us all up with promises of what we can achieve with packets of easily grown annuals, riots of colour for not a lot of pennies. So we all went off much happier into the winter evening, knowing we would all have very colourful gardens this summer and autumn. It was also our chance to celebrate the four score years and ten of two of our members, happy special birthdays to Marjorie and Beth. Our meeting in March is a visit from William Murch an expert on azaleas and camellias, so please come along and join us for another excellent talk. We look forward to seeing you there.
