h- L-L ACROSS THE FIELDS TO SCROOBY "There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood leads on to fortune. 11 Ours is the fortune. Sally F. Dawes ' ACROSS THE FIELDS TO SCROOBY "There is a tide in the affairs of men, .*3 Which taken at the flood leads on to fortune." Ours is the fortune. ;;,vj Oliver Herford deplores the fact that God gives us our relatives. Oliver Wendell Holmes somewhere advises that we choose our own ancestors; and Maeterlinck in The Blue-bird * presents the idea of selecting one's parents, Grantea that we had this power and this privilege, how many of us of Bradford and Brewster descent would care to exchange our God-given ancestors - men who have been described as "the true progenitors of the west ward march of the Anglo-Saxon race" - care to exchange such ancestors for any of our own choice? Could we find men with repu- tations more to our liking? "Men whom the Lord, and not the King made great; And who, themselves, were both a church and state." And these men were the product of an England which Emerson describes as 'no lotus-garden, no paradise of serene sky and roses and music and merriment all the year round, but a cold, foggy mournful country, where nothing ^ rew well in the open but robust men and i *r virtuous women. True it is tc-day a 'cold, foggy, mournful country' much of the year, and most cold, and most foggy, and most mournful in the midlands from which came Bradford and Brewster.

  • ANNUAL REPORT 2010-11 -.: Nottinghamshire ASA
ANNUAL REPORT 2010-11 NOTTS COUNTY SWIM SQUAD and Nova Centurion Swimming Club Report of the Swim Squad Administrator As was communicated to parents and swimmers earlier this year, the reduction in local government finance has resulted in cuts to funding and services and Nottinghamshire County Council Sports Department was not immune to this. Since the inception of their Leisure Services Department in 1976, Nottinghamshire has supported the County Swim Squad both financially and through its employment structures. However, at the beginning of January we were informed that this will ultimately be significantly reduced. In recognition of the importance of the Swim Squad, time was given for us to re-structure and to raise increased funding to cover the reduction in finance. Now as from April 2012 the County Council will no longer manage the Swim Squad, though they have agreed that they will still provide a not-insignificant amount of grant aid. This resulted in us looking at all alternative options, and having discussion with Mansfield and Bassetlaw District Councils who would no longer receive their grant aid from the County Council towards the coaching posts. When Notts County Council first took on the Swim Squad it was being run by Notts ASA and it is now planned that the Swim Squad will return to being run by Notts ASA as from April 2012, with Nova Centurion SC continuing as the competitive outlet for the swimmers. So, while there has been, and still is, much to be done to implement the required structural changes, it is the intention that the Swim Squad will continue in a similar format and that the swimmers will see little change.
