ANNUAL REPORT 2010-11

NOTTS COUNTY SWIM SQUAD

and

Nova Centurion Swimming Club

Report of the Swim Squad Administrator

As was communicated to parents and swimmers earlier this year, the reduction in local government finance has resulted in cuts to funding and services and County Council Sports Department was not immune to this.

Since the inception of their Leisure Services Department in 1976, Nottinghamshire has supported the County Swim Squad both financially and through its employment structures. However, at the beginning of January we were informed that this will ultimately be significantly reduced. In recognition of the importance of the Swim Squad, time was given for us to re-structure and to raise increased funding to cover the reduction in finance. Now as from April 2012 the County Council will no longer manage the Swim Squad, though they have agreed that they will still provide a not-insignificant amount of grant aid.

This resulted in us looking at all alternative options, and having discussion with Mansfield and Bassetlaw District Councils who would no longer receive their grant aid from the County Council towards the coaching posts.

When Notts County Council first took on the Swim Squad it was being run by Notts ASA and it is now planned that the Swim Squad will return to being run by Notts ASA as from April 2012, with Nova Centurion SC continuing as the competitive outlet for the swimmers. So, while there has been, and still is, much to be done to implement the required structural changes, it is the intention that the Swim Squad will continue in a similar format and that the swimmers will see little change.

We have always been aware that because of the significant contribution that we have received from the County Council, our fees have been able to be extremely competitive for the number of hours training available and the standard of coaching, but there will now need to be a phased increase in fees up to 2013 so that by then we are working from a sound financial base.

The pending change in structure did, however, enable us to respond to a request from many people who returned the Squad evaluation form at the end of last year, and introduce standing orders for the collection of fees for the Squads.

During the past 12 months, we have had a change in coach for the Development Squad in Nottingham. Dave Wright retired from this post in April after a number of years giving a sound start to swimmers on the Development Squad and seeing many progress to great achievements. Our thanks go to Dave and we also welcome Grant Robe who has taken on this role.

My thanks go to those people who during the past year have continued to help with the administration of the various Squads - David and Margaret Holder in Nottingham, Sandra Hull and Ivan Colton in Mansfield and Sue Lefley in Bassetlaw.

It is particularly pertinent this year, on behalf of the clubs and swimmers in the County to thank particular local authorities in Nottinghamshire who make it possible for the Squad to exist. Mansfield District Council and Bassetlaw District Council continue to provide both facilities and support for staffing, and Nottingham City Council assist us with access and support for pool time in the City. We are also grateful to Nottingham University for their support and help in accommodating sessions. We are also appreciative of the help from Newark, Southwell, Hucknall and Sutton-in-Ashfield where we also hire facilities.

It has been even more obvious this year that Notts County Swim Squad is based on effective teamwork and our thanks go to all the partners who are part of this, including all our base clubs, Notts ASA, ASA East Midland Region the ASA and as well as our kit sponsor Speedo. 2

It goes without saying that our thanks go to the one organisation whose support has been vital as the backbone to our Squad system - Nottinghamshire County Council. We are extremely grateful for their unprecedented support over the past 35 years, and we are appreciative of their help now in granting time for us to adjust to our new circumstances, for their help in providing advice, and for their commitment to continue to provide financial aid.

Competitive Highlights A full list of events and results is included at the end of this report. I am pleased to report the following highlights.

Midland Championships The first Central Zone Meet was held in Corby in January our swimmers were the top Midland club winning 13 Gold 8 Silver and 7 Bronze. At the Midland Age Groups held over two weekends in June our younger swimmers produced excellent results taking 26 Gold 20Silver and 25 Bonze. Importantly many new National qualifying times were achieved and the squad placed swimmers in 3 every individual final. Again Nova was top of the medal table. The Midland Youth Championships also saw Nova as top club with a medal count of 24 Gold 22 Silver and 12 bronze.

Domestic Events Our swimmers have enjoyed many racing opportunities. Meets have been arranged for all training groups and ages and every effort is made to provide quality racing experience, which improves competitive ability. Importantly meets must fit both the training cycle and provide swimmers the chance to achieve qualification for Midland and National events.

National Championships and Major Games Trials In this Olympic cycle the governing body has decided to go with two selection meets for major games. The first trials held at the Manchester pool in March proved difficult for many of Britain’s top swimmers following so closely from a long last season ending with a late Commonwealth Games. Rebecca Adlington was the star of the trials winning the 200/400/800 Freestyle. Her times in both the 400/800 ranked her number one in the World rankings securing her selection for the World Championships. Other finalist at the event were Jess Sylvester, Sasha Matthews, Harry Needs, Emma Bird and Georgia Hohmann.

In the disability events Andrew Zawadzki, Charlotte Henshaw and Andrew Meanwell all produced outstanding swims.

Sam van de Schootbrugge and Fiona Donnelly hit qualification standards for the European Junior Championships and Matthew Watkinson and Karl Morgan hit the standard for the European Youth Olympic Team.

The second trial event held in June at Sheffield was not well attended as it clashed with the main exam dates for many swimmers. Again Rebecca Adlington produced world quality times to win both the 400 and 800 Freestyle despite training through the meet. Jess Sylvester was 3rd in the 100 Butterfly and Sasha Matthews, Georgia Hohmann Emma Bird, Natasha Hofton and Harry Needs produced good swims to make finals.

The Scottish Championships at Glasgow in July provided our senior and youth swimmers with a final racing opportunity before the major end of season events. Rebecca Adlington took the 200 and 800 titles. Jess Sylvester was 2nd in the 100 Freestyle and took two Bronze medals. Sasha Matthews won the 400 Freestyle. Emma Bird took the 200 Breaststroke title and a bonze in the 100, and Georgia Hohmann won the 200 Backstroke with Natasha Hofton taking the Silver. Altogether our swimmers took 5 Gold 2 Silver and 4 Bonze, making 30 finals.

National Age Groups Our younger swimmers were in excellent form winning 6 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze medals at the meet. Congratulations to Rosie Rudin who took the top girl award for her age group with 5 Gold medals and one Bronze in the pool and then took Silver in the 1,500 Open Water swim. William Gayne was the other Gold medallist. Nova was placed second overall on number of medals won.

National Youth Championships Except for the last day, we were without two of our big hitters, Matthew Watkinson and Karl Morgan who were on international duty, but when he came Karl Morgan made up for this by taking Gold in the 50m Freestyle. In total Nova had 1Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze medals with 29 finalists, finishing 3rd in the Top Girls Club and 4th in the Overall Top Club.

4 Disability Events The main disability event this season was the DSC Long Course Trials held during April. Charlotte Henshaw and Oliver Hynd produced great swims both gaining selection for the IPC European Championships. Andrew Zawadzki was selected to the IPC British Development Team.

International Events The World Championships held in Shanghai at the end of July were eagerly awaited as an indication of which swimmers will be contenders for Olympic titles next year. I am pleased report Rebecca Adlington won the 800 Freestyle World crown. This was the first Freestyle gold medal ever won by a British swimmer. Rebecca is now the only British woman in history to hold Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic titles. Rebecca also took the silver in the 400 event, providing GB with half its medal count. My congratulations on this historic achievement.

At the IPC European Championships Oliver Hynd produced a string of great swims taking 1 Gold 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals. Charlotte Henshaw was also in top form with a Silver medal in the 100 Breaststroke.

Oliver Pratley swam for GB at the World Downs Syndrome Swimming Championships in Taiwan, which was self funded, during which he claimed 4 Junior World records and 5 European Records, he was the youngest GB swimmer there at 15. Oliver also competed at the European DS Championships in Southampton where although he lost a couple of his World records he gained others in different events to take his tally to 5 Junior World and 7 Junior European records. At the Learning Disabilities Championships at Ponds Forge at the beginning of August he broke 2 more World and European Junior records which gave him 7 junior World and 9 junior European records.

Sam van de Schootbrugge and Fiona Donnelly produced personal best times at the European Junior Championships, Sam making the semi final and Fiona narrowly missing out on a medal as part of the GB 4x200 Freestyle team.

Matthew Watkinson and Karl Morgan gained their first international experience at the European Youth Olympic festival and returned with a silver medal each as part of the GB 4x100 Freestyle team.

Swimmers of the Year Sam van de Schootbrugge and Oliver Hynd are this year’s recipients.

Sam Has produced consistent performances throughout the season and maintained a high level of training despite taking final exams prior to University entrance. He has developed into one of the top 10 ranked male 200 Butterfly swimmers in GB making the difficult transition from age group to senior rankings.

Oliver has had a fantastic year and is now pressing his more established brother very hard for international honours. His 5 medal count at the European IPC Championships confirmed his great potential to challenge for Paralympics glory next year.

Partners Can I thank all the partners who contribute to the existence and smooth running of the Nova programme, Nottinghamshire County Council, Bassetlaw District Council, Mansfield District Council, Nottingham City Council, Notts ASA and Nottingham University.

May I also thank swimmers, parents, coaches and volunteers who have contributed so much. I thank Jose Grange who has worked tirelessly on the restructuring package for the squad. Suzi Cleveley, Margaret Holder and the Nova and Management committees. 5

We have a great team of coaches, Cathy Prichard and her team in Bassetlaw, Glenn Smith and his team in Mansfield and Jamie Main, Tom Wilkinson, Dave Sankey, Tom O’Reilly in Nottingham. Following the recent retirement of Dave Wright, who has been a dedicated coach with the Nottingham Development Squad for many years, Grant Robe has joined us and is already doing sterling work with this Development group. Also Mike Peyrebrunne has been a real asset as our sport scientist working with our performance swimmers. Finally I would like to thank Steve Bradley and Chris Rolle from Notts County Council for their continued support.

I am pleased to report the squad is in a healthy position and can look forward to an exiting next 12 months.

7 Report of Mansfield Squad Coach

Introduction The 2010/2011 Season has been very successful for the squad in Mansfield, and I am pleased to say the squad continues to ‘punch’ well above its expectations, and we continue to produce swimmers who compete at the highest level.

This year the squad has hit new heights in terms on International success and completed the year with some outstanding results at the ASA National Age and Youth Championships.

That said, the year has been challenging for both the squad and myself, especially following a family bereavement, and the news that the Nottinghamshire County Council would be reducing its financial support to the squad over the next three years. Initially the reduction in funding did cause some anxiety, however I’m pleased to say that Mansfield District Council are still very supportive of the squad, and swimming development in general, and for at least the short term the squad will be secure. We did have to raise squad fees in April 2011, and the Council will have to review these again in 2012/13.

Mansfield Leisure facilities are also currently undergoing a market testing process and it is likely that a private contractor will be operating the facilities from the beginning of 2012. This should not have too much impact on the squad but there may be some new challenges from 2012/13.

Squad General Comments Both A and B Squad are currently full to capacity and our Development Squad is now also full after a recent trial. The standard of all three squads continues to improve year by year. Our A Squad can now boast four International swimmers, while the majority of A Squad having either National or multiple Midland qualification standards.

Attendances continue to improve, however, there is always room for more improvement, and swimmers need to understand that consistency is the key to progression. Maintaining training volume over the season is really important if performance goals are to be met. Here are five things that swimmers can focus on in preparation for the coming season. a) What decisions will you make today that will have a performance impact? Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do to improve today. b) Do the small things well so that the bigger things can take care of themselves c) Do you control the “controllables” and avoid wasting time and energy on the “uncontrollables” d) What have learned this year that you are putting in place to be ready for this season? e) How can you consistently do the ‘’right things’’ that will bring about performance improvements.

Squad Performance A full diary of events are listed in the chief coaches report for 2010/2011, however there are a few that are worthy of noting in this report.

International Success Both Charlotte Henshaw and Oliver Hynd qualified for the IPC European Championships which took place in Berlin, Germany in July. Charlotte swam stroke for stroke with her great rival Liz Johnson, for 95 metres of their SB6 Category 100m Breaststroke, with Liz just getting the touch and Charlotte taking a fantastic Silver Medal.

Ollie Hynd swimming in his first major championships had an excellent week starting with an unexpected Bronze in the Men’s S8 Category 100m Backstroke and the took a Silver Medal 8 behind brother Sam in the S8 400 Freestyle both in new best times. He then went on to swim a fantastic race to take the Gold medal in the SM8 200m Individual Medley, in a new European Record, and capped the week off of by taking another bronze as part of the 34 Point Medley Relay squad. This took our medal tally to 5, an outstanding achievement.

Both swimmers will now be turning their thoughts to Paralympics in London next year, and the trials which start on 3rd March 2012.

Karl Morgan had a great season, firstly qualifying for the British Team for the European Youth Olympics at the British Trials, and backed this up with some scintillating times at the Youth Olympics in Turkey in July. Karl was swimming as part of the Boys 4x100m Freestyle team, and swam an outstanding leg (sub 52 seconds) to help his team mates to a superb Silver Medal. Following the championships Karl flew back to the UK and went straight to the ASA National Youth Championships, where he competed in the Boys 50m Freestyle, and promptly took the Gold medal in the 15/16yrs Age Group, to complete an fantastic two weeks.

Andrew Zawadzki, has continued to improve all season and got his reward by being selected to represent the Great Britain Disability Development team at the German Open in May. Andrew, swam extremely well to take a Gold Medal in the Junior Category 200m Individual Medley, and a Gold in the Junior 400m Freestyle. Andrew will also be focusing this season on those Paralympic trials in March 2012.

ASA National Championships At the ASA National Age Group Championships, Shannon Brown swam as part of the Girls 4x100m and 4x200m Freestyle teams and was unlucky not to pick up a medal in the 4x200m event. Shannon swam a best time on the front leg and the team fought hard to be placed an excellent 4th. Callum Murray and Luke Carnell were also part of the Boys 4x200m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley teams, both swam great legs in both races recording some fantastic splits but the team just failed to make both finals, but gaining good experience in the process.

At the Youth Championships, as well as Karl’s Gold in the 15/16yrs 50m Freestyle, we also had some outstanding performances. Oliver Hynd backed up his European Championship success with an outstanding performance in the MD 400m Freestyle to take the Gold in a faster time than he did in Berlin, and he also took the Gold Medal in the MD 200m Individual Medley. Charlotte took the Gold in the MD 100m Breaststroke again in a faster time she did in Berlin, and Ollie Hynd also took a third medal, a bronze in the MD 100m Freestyle.

Daniel Timms, knocked 3 seconds off his 200m Breaststroke best time from heats, semi and final where he was placed 7th. Lewis Steptoe did best times in the 17/18yrs 200m & 400m Freestyle and then knocked 20 seconds off his previous best in the 1500m Freestyle to be placed 9th overall in the 17/18yrs age group. Imogen Gould had a great week making the semi finals in both the Girls 14/15yrs 100m & 200m Breaststroke. and Kieran McGinley had two solid swims in the Boys 15/16yrs 100m & 200m Butterfly, as did Seb Smith in the 15/16yrs 100m Backstroke.

Andrew Zawadzki, also had a good week, taking 4th .place in the MD 200m Freestyle and made a big improvement in the MD 100m Breaststroke to be placed 9th.

Conclusion The squad could not run without the help of assistant coaches and volunteers. My thanks to Jackie Musgrove and Gail Stockton for their support and excellent work with B and Development Squads. Thank you also to Jill Barlow for her great work with her group on A squad and to Callum Lawson for his assistance and support during our morning sessions and for covering in my absence. To my casual coaches, Roy Ross, Barry Tindall, Ivan Colton, Dave Baguley, and Paul Black, a big thank you for all your help this past season. 9

My thanks also to the staff of all the facilities in Mansfield and to Mansfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, without their support the squad would not function.

The squad must now build on the success of 2011 and look forward with excitement for 2012. Their will be challenges in the next 12 months, but I’m confident the squad is in ‘’good shape’’ to meet any obstacles.

Good Luck to all in 2012.

Report of Bassetlaw Squad Coach

Introduction and overview

The Bassetlaw Swim Squad has had some great performances this season, international selections and big improvements from individual swimmers. Across the board some swimmers have stepped up to the mark and more than exceeded expectations, whereas others have not; making it, in many ways, a squad of two halves.

The promise and possibilities referred to in last year’s report have been stifled partly by the on- going tightening of qualifying times for Championship events. Swimmers across the swimming fraternity, particularly at Age Group level, found the times challenging. This has therefore shown in the number of squad member achieving the necessary qualifying times. In Bassetlaw we had a large number of swimmers who were very close to making the cut but in the end just ran out of opportunities.

Membership of the squad this season peaked at 69 members; since then some members have come off the squad, but we are confident that numbers will be back up to the same level in the next month or so.

For the first time for a few years, the Bassetlaw Swim Squad has an achievement at International level to celebrate. Matthew Watkinson represented GB at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Turkey at Trabzon. Matt competed in both the 100m Freestyle and 4x100m Freestyle Team.

He did himself proud by making the final in a personal best time of 52.80 breaking the 53 barrier for the first time. He was placed 6th in the final, shaving a further five hundredths off his heat time. The climax of the meet for both Matt and Karl Morgan (from the Mansfield Squad) was winning silver in the 4x100m Freestyle Team with both splitting under 52 seconds.

Congratulation to both Matt and Karl on their first international success.

11 Competitive highlights for 2010/11.

Midland Short Course Once again it was Matt Watkinson who had something to celebrate when he won a table full of silver wear at Corby. He won the junior awards in the 50m 100m and 200m Freestyle together with the 200m Backstroke and Individual Medley. In doing so, he also broke a number of Nottinghamshire and Midland records. In addition Matt Dobson won the 1500m Freestyle.

Midland Youth Championships Eleven swimmers competed at these championships and made twenty two finals in total. The most successful of these were: Matt Watkinson who won both the 100m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke and was a finalist in 200m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle, he was also a part of the three winning Nova relay teams. Matt Dobson won silver in 1500m Freestyle, Bronze in the 200m Freestyle and was a finalist in the 400m Free. Alex Hunter won Bronze in 1500m Free, which was a great result for him. He also was a finalist in 400m Free and 400m Individual Medley. Josh Stephenson-Ganner, Beth Davies, Megan Berridge and Corey Mead were also in the top eight in their respective events.

Midland Age Group Championships Just six Bassetlaw swimmers, competed in thirty events between them over the two age group weekends. The most successful of these were: Kristian Duke who made eight finalist places and came 6th in the overall 12 year old boys BAGCAT, Ben Palmer had four top eight places including a third in the 400m Freestyle and Lucy Ambrose was also place 4th in the 100m Butterfly. Other swimmers were: Lewis Illsley, Asha-Jo Anthony and Owen Roberts.

National Youth Championships Bassetlaw had just four National qualifiers this year but Matt Watkinson was away at European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) for most of the completion.

The best results came in the 4 x 200m Freestyle Team and 4 x100m Medley Team which both made finals and were places 8th and 6th respectively. Matt Dobson was in the Freestyle Team and Matt Watkinson led off on Backstroke in the Medley Team in a personal best time. Matt Watkinson also came 6th in the final of the 50m Freestyle in a best time of 24.48.

Other good performances came from Alex Hunter in the 1500m Freestyle who improved on his best time by 3.5 seconds and was 14th overall and 4th fifteen year old. Matt Dobson was in the same event and was placed 10th. Megan Berridge competed in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke and was slightly outside her best time on both.

Other competitions were: British Swimming Championships Two Bassetlaw swimmers competed at this event. Matt Watkinson’s main event was the 100m Freestyle, from this he was able to qualify for selection for the EYOF. Matt Dobson competed in the 1500m Freestyle where he was placed 23rd. To make the qualifying time for this event was in itself an achievement, as only a small number of swimmers make it.

Zonal Meet This meet was new for 2011. The competition included the three regions in central England and it worked surprisingly well providing some great competition at Corby. Only a small number of the Bassetlaw swimmers embraced it, but it worked for those who competed.

12

Scottish Nationals A selected group of swimmers attended the Scottish Nationals in Glasgow, again it provided those who went with a good and different experience to what they are used to. The junior swimmers benefited from getting a number of second swims in semi-finals and finals and produced some great performances.

General comments and conclusion In the last decade swimming has moved on dramatically and moving goal posts are now the norm. It can be taken as read that qualifying times will get quicker and generally there are more swimmers doing the right things to make the grade. It therefore naturally follows that it is not an option just to do more of the same if you are to be successful.

The Bassetlaw swimmers need to take stock and check if they are doing the following: 1. Maintaining a high and consistent level of attendance. 2. Training to the best of their ability and demonstrating skills throughout the set. 3. Attending the correct type of competitions throughout the season to enable them to qualify for key championship events. 4. Setting clear and realistic goals. Swimmers should not be complacent about their place on the squads. There is no shortage of swimmers wanting to become Squad members and many of them have already achieved a good level of training and competitive ability. Thank you My thanks go to the three coaches who helped sustain the functioning of the Swim Squad through the last season. Carole has done a sterling job coaching Development Squad and co-coaching B Squad along with Andy Thompson. Andy took over from Graham Allen at the end of last season and has made a great contribution to the squad. Matthew Greenwood has also worked with us, as a support coach, whilst working on his level 3 qualification. Matt is about to leave us and transfer to Coventry to go to University, so our special thanks go to him and we wish him well for the future. Also, thanks go to my line manager Tony Wright for his on-going support at Bassetlaw District Council, and finally, but not least, thanks go to the BPL staff who are always very accommodating and helpful to the squad.

I am looking forward to a more successful and fulfilling season for 2011/12.

Report of Disability Squad Coach

The last 12 months has just seemed to have flown by and during this time the swimmers have continued to achieve personal best times, medals and meet their own personal goals.

This time last year, I reported that we would soon have 3 Down Syndrome swimmers swimming for GB at the World Swimming Championships in Taiwan, Clare Crawford, Andrew Banks and Oliver Pratley all equipped themselves very well indeed and came back with a host of medals, personal bests and in Oliver’s case Junior World and European records.

During the last 12 months Cambell Plant represented East Midlands at the UK School Games in Sunderland and came a creditable 4th and 5th in her events and was part of the winning Central team, Adam Meanwell was again selected for the Home Nations Regional Talent Programme.

14

Because of the various classifications we have within the squad it is difficult to list everybody’s achievements in detail but please be assured the squad are training and swimming at a level I know other squads outside of the county are envious of and some are trying to replicate.

This time last year I mentioned within my report Andrew Zawadzki who was starting to show some potential, Andrew is now training with Glen at Mansfield and this is starting to pay dividends with his swimming.

Oliver Pratley has gone from strength to strength in the last twelve months and as detailed within this report now holds 7 World and 9 European records. A great achievement. Well done Oliver.

Before I close I would like to thank the following, who without their support this Squad would not be able to function, Steve, Grant Cashmore, Mikenda Plant, thank you for your help and for volunteering it is greatly appreciated.

Thanks also to the staff at the pools at Nottingham University, Portland and Hucknall and the people at home and the staff at Nottinghamshire County Council, Communities Department, through what has been a difficult time for them.

15 Report of the Newark & Sherwood Squad Coach

The last 12 months have seen a significant change in members of N&S Development Squad and we have had an encouragingly high standard of new-comers following Counties 2010 and a squad trial. The new members have settled in well and the Squad is looking strong.

We are currently busy setting individual and Squad goals for the coming months. The targets we set are time based, but underlying that it is important to see these times achieved whilst also controlling skills.

In training swimmers should constantly work on skills and be disciplined – good habits learnt now should stay as a swimmer progresses. Every time the whole squad completes a warm up demonstrating the skill(s) asked for, it is a step in the right direction. Every time a swimmer holds that skill throughout the set, they start to set themselves apart from the rest. This is the justification for my constant ‘nagging’ and ‘repeat practices’. Take time out at competitions to watch the best senior swimmers and you will see the effect of years of good training practices.

A swimmer’s full potential is unlocked slowly, and over time skill, discipline and self belief are key factors in determining the success of a swim career. A combination of these three qualities will serve a swimmer proud in the long term.

Secretary’s Report

This year has been a more challenging one for the club; in the pool, as other clubs have improved their performance, and out of the pool, as we have had to reorganise the way the club is run. However, it has been great to see that all our members have succeeded in both these areas, despite the more difficult circumstances, and as this report shows our club remains at the top of the podium.

It really has been a year of hard work for the committee as they have had to make important decisions about the club’s future and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their time and energy which they give voluntarily. Ongoing roles during 2010/11 include Josie Grange (Chairman), Matt Earp (Treasurer), Colin Walton (Workforce Development Co-ordinator), Dave Palmer (Welfare Officer), Margaret Holder (Competitions Secretary) and Elaine Richards (Kit Manager). Other committee members were Wendy Coles, Carole Johnson, Ivan Colton, Helen Hynd, Roy Ross, Sue Lefley and Amanda Scotney. Thanks also to Sheila Donnelly for arranging accommodation at meets, Helen Gorman who updates our website, and Karen Oates who has this year produced newsletters which are on the website.

The preparations that we have had to make regarding the pending change in the management of the Squads have been greatly assisted by club members who have volunteered their expertise and thanks go to Ivan Colton and Nicki Hay who have helped with Human Resources advice, Helen Gorman who has been looking at sponsorship, and also staff from Notts County Council and the ASA.

One of the other areas of work this year has been our Swim21 re-accreditation which comes around every four years. As part of this and in preparation for some of the changes in the management of the squad and the role for the club, various changes to the club constitution are proposed by the Committee to the AGM. Approval of these proposals will bring our constitution in line with the ASA model constitution and also provide the flexibility to be able to manage the pending re-organisation.

Another area that was discussed this year was the impact of social networking sites and enclosed is an extract from the ASA advice on this for swimmers and parents of swimmers which we feel may be useful.

Earlier this year Speedo invited some of our swimmers, together with our Chairman, Josie Grange to attend the opening of the new Speedo headquarters in Nottingham. This is the centre of their global business and when they moved to new premises the company took the decision to remain in Nottingham. The offices were formally opened by HRH the Princess Royal and Danielle Binks presented her with a bouquet. Also attending from the club were Tom Roberts, Charlotte Henshaw, Fiona Donnelly and Luke Howdle. We have had links with Speedo since the squad started in the mid 1970’s and they are now increasing their support of the club by providing a link to purchase Speedo goods at a reduced price from the Nova section of the Notts ASA website - an arrangement which will also financially benefit the club. Look out for this starting soon!

Suzi Cleveley Secretary

26 Treasurer’s Report

Following a long period of financial support for the squad, for which I would like to express my gratitude, Notts County Council announced in January that the level of their financial contribution going forwards would be cut significantly, a consequence of the unprecedented reductions that have been required to local government expenditure.

These changes have resulted in a significant increase to the subscription fees received by the club, as from 1 April 2011 we have been collecting the Notts County Council element of the squad fees in addition to the club element. However, this has come at the expense of an increase in pool hire expenditure, as the club has now taken on board all of the squad’s costs in this area, and is likely to result in further increases in expenditure going forward.

Other areas of income and expenditure that have changed materially during the year include mentoring income; which has increased by £1,400, a result of the fact that the current financial year is the first full year for which we have received these payments and the Notts County Council Contribution; which has changed from an expense of £4,875 to income of £1,125, following the cessation of any requirement to pay these costs going forward and a reversal of the accrued contribution included in last year’s accounts. Admin costs have also increased, principally due to increases in room hire costs for the various committee meetings that have been held throughout the year and training camp expenditure has fallen. A consequence of the fact that two youth camps fell within the previous accounting period, rather than the single camp that has been subsidised in the current year.

Overall, this has resulted in a surplus of £11,196 for the year. However, the changes to the club’s structure and the further phased withdrawal of much of the Notts County Council’s remaining financial support over the next few years - which will lead to further increases in costs for the club - means that further increases to fees are likely over the medium term.

Matt Earp Treasurer
