  • ANNUAL REPORT 2010-11 -.: Nottinghamshire ASA
ANNUAL REPORT 2010-11 NOTTS COUNTY SWIM SQUAD and Nova Centurion Swimming Club Report of the Swim Squad Administrator As was communicated to parents and swimmers earlier this year, the reduction in local government finance has resulted in cuts to funding and services and Nottinghamshire County Council Sports Department was not immune to this. Since the inception of their Leisure Services Department in 1976, Nottinghamshire has supported the County Swim Squad both financially and through its employment structures. However, at the beginning of January we were informed that this will ultimately be significantly reduced. In recognition of the importance of the Swim Squad, time was given for us to re-structure and to raise increased funding to cover the reduction in finance. Now as from April 2012 the County Council will no longer manage the Swim Squad, though they have agreed that they will still provide a not-insignificant amount of grant aid. This resulted in us looking at all alternative options, and having discussion with Mansfield and Bassetlaw District Councils who would no longer receive their grant aid from the County Council towards the coaching posts. When Notts County Council first took on the Swim Squad it was being run by Notts ASA and it is now planned that the Swim Squad will return to being run by Notts ASA as from April 2012, with Nova Centurion SC continuing as the competitive outlet for the swimmers. So, while there has been, and still is, much to be done to implement the required structural changes, it is the intention that the Swim Squad will continue in a similar format and that the swimmers will see little change.

  • Nova Squad Book August 2019
NOTTS COUNTY SWIM SQUAD and Swimming Club www.novacenturion.co.uk 08/19 NOTTS COUNTY SWIM SQUAD History The Squad began in September 1973 and was called the Notts ASA Training Scheme. The Notts ASA employed a part-time coach and training sessions were held in Nottingham in the early mornings and early evenings. Initially the scheme was started as a six-month pilot scheme to give time for the Notts ASA to approach the local authority to support it. Unfortunately, owing to local government reorganisation, it was necessary to continue the scheme on a part-time basis until July 1975. During this time, negotiations with the newly formed Nottinghamshire County Council Leisure Services Department proved successful and the scheme was adopted by them in April 1975. In May 1975 the first full- time coach was appointed and this policy was continued when the present coach, Bill Furniss, took up his post in August 1980. During this period the name was changed to the present Notts County Swim Squad and the first attempts to form a link squad in the Mansfield area were made. In the early 1990's the squad was extended to the Bassetlaw area and a coach/ development officer post was created on a jointly funded basis between Notts County Council Leisure Services and the Bassetlaw District Council. Shortly after this the Mansfield District Council came on board with a similar arrangement for funding a similar position in Mansfield, taking responsibility for the Squad in that area. Later a Development Squad was formed to cover the Newark & Sherwood District.

  • The Works Brass Band – a Historical Directory of the Industrial and Corporate Patronage and Sponsorship of Brass Bands
The works brass band – a historical directory of the industrial and corporate patronage and sponsorship of brass bands Gavin Holman, January 2020 Preston Corporation Tramways Band, c. 1910 From the earliest days of brass bands in the British Isles, they have been supported at various times and to differing extents by businesses and their owners. In some cases this support has been purely philanthropic, but there was usually a quid pro quo involved where the sponsor received benefits – e.g. advertising, income from band engagements, entertainment for business events, a “worthwhile” pastime for their employees, corporate public relations and brand awareness - who would have heard of John Foster’s Mills outside of the Bradford area if it wasn’t for the Black Dyke Band? One major sponsor and supporter of brass bands, particularly in the second half of the 19th century, was the British Army, through the Volunteer movement, with upwards of 500 bands being associated with the Volunteers at some time – a more accurate estimate of these numbers awaits some further analysis. However, I exclude these bands from this paper, to concentrate on the commercial bodies that supported brass bands. I am also excluding social, civic, religious, educational and political organisations’ sponsorship or support. In some cases it is difficult to determine whether a band, composed of workers from a particular company or industry was supported by the business or not. The “workmen’s band” was often a separate entity, supported by a local trade union or other organisation. For the purposes of this review I will be including them unless there is specific reference to a trade union or other social organisation.
