EDITORIAL THE WHOLE FANZINE CATALOG 11/12 BRIAN EARL BROWN 16711 BURT R 07 it's late DETROIBMI . USA ■Well,I think this is a late issue since I intended tci .get it out about three weeks ago, which would have been 6 weeks after the last issue of hlofan should have been out. That was delayed,too.... That's one . reason why, if you'll check the indica below, you'll see that WoFan is now listed as a bimonthly publication TABLE OF CONTENTS There's a lot of bother to publishing an issue and I want to cut -bock a little on that bother. CHANGES Editorial page 2 In fact WoFan is going to be changing a lot in the Booksellers page A next few issues, a fact that you probably won't notice Clubzines page A because it's been different every time its come out. The most noticable difference is that starting with Newszines page A this issue, it's being mailed by via bulk mailing. Coraiczines page 5 There are currently about 150 US copies which isn't the magical 200 copies that the post office requires, Genzines but it's cheaper to mail out 200 by Bulk than it is to Australia page 6 mail 150 copies by fir,st class mail, and even more . with a double-sized issue like this. The 50 extra Canada page 7 copies will be mailed back to myself, then pi-obably England page 7 mailed overseas. It's kind of nasty of my to mail overseas fans 'used' fanzines, but I've been trying fr France page 7 from the first to find ways to make WoFan a breakeven Neu Zealand page 8 publication and I certainly can use the savings in postage that a bulk mailing will allow. -
Azazel Historically, the Word Azazel Is an Idea and Rarely an Incarnate Demon
Azazel Historically, the word azazel is an idea and rarely an incarnate demon. Figure 1 Possible sigil of Azazel. Modern writings use the sigil for the planet Saturn as well. Vayikra (Leviticus) The earliest known mention of the word Azazel in Jewish texts appears in the late seventh century B.C. which is the third of the five books of the Torah. To modern American ( וַיִּקְרָ א ) book called the Vayikra Christians, this books is Leviticus because of its discussion of the Levites. In Leviticus 16, two goats are placed before the temple for selection in an offering. A lot is cast. One Goat is then sacrificed to Yahweh and the other goats is said to outwardly bear all the sends of those making the sacrifice. The text The general translation .( לַעֲזָאזֵל ) specifically says one goat was chosen for Yahweh and the for Az azel of the words is “absolute removal.” Another set of Hebrew scholars translate Azazel in old Hebrew translates as "az" (strong/rough) and "el" (strong/God). The azazel goat, often called the scapegoat then is taken away. A number of scholars have concluded that “azazel” refers to a series of mountains near Jerusalem with steep cliffs. Fragmentary records suggest that bizarre Yahweh ritual was carried out on the goat. According to research, a red rope was tied to the goat and to an altar next to jagged cliff. The goat is pushed over the cliff’s edge and torn to pieces by the cliff walls as it falls. The bottom of the cliff was a desert that was considered the realm of the “se'irim” class of demons. -

Media Industry Approaches to Comic-To-Live-Action Adaptations and Race
From Serials to Blockbusters: Media Industry Approaches to Comic-to-Live-Action Adaptations and Race by Kathryn M. Frank A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in the University of Michigan 2015 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Lisa A. Nakamura Associate Professor Aswin Punathambekar © Kathryn M. Frank 2015 “I don't remember when exactly I read my first comic book, but I do remember exactly how liberated and subversive I felt as a result.” ― Edward W. Said, Palestine For Mom and Dad, who taught me to be my own hero ii Acknowledgements There are so many people without whom this project would never have been possible. First and foremost, my parents, Paul and MaryAnn Frank, who never blinked when I told them I wanted to move half way across the country to read comic books for a living. Their unending support has taken many forms, from late-night pep talks and airport pick-ups to rides to Comic-Con at 3 am and listening to a comics nerd blather on for hours about why Man of Steel was so terrible. I could never hope to repay the patience, love, and trust they have given me throughout the years, but hopefully fewer midnight conversations about my dissertation will be a good start. Amanda Lotz has shown unwavering interest and support for me and for my work since before we were formally advisor and advisee, and her insight, feedback, and attention to detail kept me invested in my own work, even in times when my resolve to continue writing was flagging. -
Marvel-Phile: Über-Grim-And-Gritty EXTREME Edition!
10 MAR 2018 1 Marvel-Phile: Über-Grim-and-Gritty EXTREME Edition! It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It 90s, but you’d be wrong. Then we have Nightwatch, a was a dark time for the Republic. In short, it was...the bald-faced ripoff of Todd MacFarlane’s more ‘90s. The 1990s were an odd time for comic books. A successful Spawn. Next, we have Necromancer… the group of comic book artists, including the likes of Jim Dr. Strange of Counter-Earth. And best for last, Lee and hate-favorite Rob Liefield, splintered off from there’s Adam X the X-TREME! Oh dear Lord -- is there Marvel Comics to start their own little company called anything more 90s than this guy? With his backwards Image. True to its name, Image Comics featured comic baseball cap, combustible blood, a costume seemingly books light on story, heavy on big, flashy art (often made of blades, and a title that features not one but either badly drawn or heavily stylized, depending on TWO “X”s, this guy that was teased as the (thankfully who you ask), and a grim and gritty aesthetic that retconned) “third Summers brother” is literally seemed to take all the wrong lessons from renowned everything about the 90s in comics, all rolled into one. works such as Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns. Don’t get me wrong, there were a few gems in the It wasn’t long until the Big Two and other publishers 1990s. Some of my favorite indie books were made hopped on the bandwagon, which was fueled by during that time. -

Kriz 2015 Abstract “The Uninteresting Majority” is a study of postwar American realist fiction written in the immediate postwar era and about the Second World War and the decade, the 1950s, that immediately followed it. The study views this period, and the novels under examination, as “post-realist.” The study defines post-realism as a way of defining reality only in terms of the present. In post-realism the past is wilfully ignored in favour of an all-encompassing present. -
Age of Apocalypse Watcher Datafiles
Apocalypse The past history of En Sabah Nur was very much similar to his Earth-616 counterpart, until the day David Haller (better known as Legion) travelled back in time. Legion wished to murder Erik Lehnsherr, in the hopes of changing history so that his father, Charles Xavier, could succeed in his goal of creating peace between humans and mutants. David was opposed by the X- Men of Earth-616, who succeeded in halting the assassination of Lehnsherr, but resulted in the death of Xavier. Their battle in Israel, years before super heroes such as the Fantastic Four and the Avengers would come to be, inspired Apocalypse to begin his conquest of the Earth and execute his belief in survival of the fittest decades before he had done so in the mainstream reality. In the end, David accidentally killed his father, changing the timeline and erasing David and the X-Men (with the exception of the time displaced Bishop) from existence. Lehnsherr went on to become Magneto and vowed to continue Charles's dream and form his own team of X-Men. During this time, Apocalypse sired a son named Nemesis. Apocalypse's first attempt at conquest was an attack on Cape Citadel, sending his Horsemen to take control of the nuclear missile facility for the intent to launch the nuclear weapons to decimate the human population. This plot was foiled by Magneto and his team of X-Men, when Apocalpyse attempted to kill the X-Men with his ship's weapons, Magneto stepped in and drove him and his Horsemen away.
