r is living proof god loves us and wants us to faehappy* --Benjamin Franklin Revenge of the Nerds III Hard rocking cover band brings their quirky style back to Stockton

Emily Wray The Argo Who would have thought that an evening with four nerds could be so fun? The comedy musical group The Nerds rocked and lit up the night at the Lakeside Center on November 29, 2000 at 9 p.m. While stu- dents were arriving the Board of Activities (BOA) handed out glow-in-the-dark necklaces to students. Admission was free. This is the third time The Nerds have graced Stockton with their geekiness. At nine, the lights dimmed. With people twirling their Lakeside suddenly had a club atmos- phere. The.Nerds jumped on stage wearing their mix- matched plaid and Converse All-Stars sneakers and 50's style glasses. At first, a few students were scattered in chairs, but once the first notes were played, students appeared out of nowhere and flooded the dance floor. The Nerds are a cover band, and played numerous popular songs, both old and new. Some of the songs included 3 Doors Down's "Kryptonite," Blink 182's "What's My Age Again," and Creed's "With Arms Wide Open." They also played a cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," which was their most well-received cover the first time Head Nerd Jim "Spaz" Garcia poses for the camera in the middle of rocking out to covers of popular and classic songs, they played Stockotn, actually invoking lighter salutes from several members of the audience. Students sang along, and those who were not on the dance floor could- n't keep still in their seats. As the show progressed, the crowd of people grew. During a short intermission, the band had a table set up where students could sign up to be on The Nerds' mail- ing list, and copies of one of their three CD's were avail- able. The Nerds are Jim "Spaz" Garcia, Peter "Stretch" Oltmanns, Jack "Biff' Yocam, and Mike "Mongo" Spiro. Garcia plays the bass and bongos and does vocals. Oltmanns plays guitar, and Yocan plays drums. Spiro plays keyboards, trumpet, tuba, kazoo, bongos and vocals.

In addition to being the most popular Jersey Shore Bar Band, the Nerds have appeared on MTV's "Ultimate Cover Band Contest." The Nerds play covers from all over the musical timeline, from Queen to 3 Doors Down. Heidi DeGroot went to the Nerds dressed to show off her appreciation for the band.

The young lady Ospreys team caved to early pressure and fell behind to their divi- sion rival Rowan in the first NJAC game

Shaun Reilly Lee Pickell The Argo The Stockton women's basketball team played solid for the first 10 minutes, but poor execution on offense and defense for most of the game aided Rowan to a 63-53 victory over the Ospreys in the debut of Big Blue on Nov. 21. "We are disappointed," junior guard Rosina Rachuba said. "We had a goal to come out and play our game, but we didn't execute. We shot poorly on offense and we didn't play that great on defense." The Ospreys grabbed an 18-10 lead over the Profs after a Lilah Ormond basket. Rowan countered with a 14-0 over the next 4 minutes, 39 seconds to give the Profs a 24-18 lead. Six-foot-two center Kathy Darling's domi- nance in the post was a major reason for that run. She made four consecutive baskets from less than 10 feet away from the basket. Two 3- pointers from freshman Staci Minuskin sealed the run. Darling had 13 points and 10 rebounds at the half. Rowan outrebounded Stockton 55- 38. However, Stockton did force 25 Rowan turnovers while only 13.
