GALLE FACE GREEN Galle Face Green is a magnificent place to witness a marvelous sun set over Sri lanka. Sri lanka travels always enjoys and cherish an evening by the Gall face green. It was laid out in 1857 by the governor Sir Henry Ward and one of the popular spot during sun set, hundreds of people come to fly kites, play cricket and to enjoy a nice walk along the green having ice cream. At the end of the green lies the magnificent Galle face hotel, an architectural marvel from the colonial era. The hotel was established in 1864 and it has given residence to many great royalties such as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and as memory the first car owned by him is placed in the hotel museum. SITE SEEN AND ACTIVITIES MUNNESWARAM TEMPLE Munneswaram temple is an important regional Hindu temple complex in Sri Lanka. It has been in existence at least since 1000 CE, although myths surrounding the temple associate it with the popular Indian epic Ramayana, and its legendary hero-king Rama. The temple is one of five ancient temples dedicated to Shiva in the region. SRI MAHA BODHI TREE The sacred bodhi tree is central to Anuradhapura in both a spiritual and physical sense. It was grown from a cutting brought from Bodhgaya in India and is said to be the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world, tended by an uninterrupted succession of guardians for over 2000 years. Today thousands of devotees come to make offerings, particularly on poya (full moon) days and weekends. Sunset is a magical time to visit. SITE SEEN AND ACTIVITIES MADHU CHURCH AT MANNAR Madhu is a mystic jungle shrine dedicated to Mother Mary lying on a remote area in Mannar. The church is one of the few churches which is visited by Buddhists as well as Hindus from all over the countryThe history of Madhu is interesting. The Portuguese invaded Sri Lanka in 1505 and missionaries started poring in to the country to convert the Buddhists and Hindus in to Catholicism by various means. Many on the coastal region converted to this new religion for favors from the new masters. MANNAR DUTCH FORT Built on the island of Mannar by the Portuguese in 1560, Mannar Fort surrendered to the Dutch on 22 February 1658 and was rebuilt by the Dutch in 1696. On 5 October 1795 the Dutch surrendered to the British. The Mannar Fort has four bastions and it’s still in good condition although the building inside the fort have not been properly maintained. Currently the Sri Lankan Police occupy this fort. SITE SEEN AND ACTIVITIES JAFFNA PUBLIC LIBRARY The Jaffna Public Library won the first place for the Best Public Libraries in Sri Lanka at the Swarna Purawara ceremony recently. The ceremony was organised by the Local Government and Provincial Councils Ministry with the University of Kelaniya Library and Information Science Department.The Jaffna Public Library functions under the Jaffna Municipal Council.The library was built in 1933 and burnt in 1981. During the early 1980s, it was one of the biggest libraries in Asia, containing over 97,000 books and manuscripts. It was burned down by miscreants during the District Development Council elections in 1982. In 2001, rehabilitation of the library was completed with new structures and new books even though old books and manuscripts could not be replaced NALLUR KANDASWAMY TEMPLE Temple History The historic Kandaswamy Temple stans at Nallur 1 1/2km from Jaffna on the Point Pedro Road. The temple was built in the 15th century, by Sanpaha Perumal the adopted son of Bhuvanekababhu, the king of Kotte, who led an expedition to the North and brought Jaffna under the suzerainty of Kotte. Having established himself as the ruler of the Jaffna Kingdom, Sanpaha Perumal set about the task of building the city and erecting the temple. SITE SEEN AND ACTIVITIES THIRUKKONESWARAM (KONESWARAM) TEMPLE Thirukkoneswaram (Koneswaram) Temple is situated on top of the Swami Rock within the Fort Fredrick. It is also known as the temple of thousand pillars. The primary deity is the Hindu God Lord Shiva in the form of Konesar. Koneswaram is one of the most ancient and holy Shiva shrines in the island with a recorded history from the 3rd century BCE and attracts Hindu pilgrims from all parts of the world. It was one of the richest temples in the South East Asia, and had in its possession large amounts of gold, pearls, precious stones, and silk. THE KANDYAN DANCE The Kandyan Dance was adapted for the stage by Chitrasena Dias in the 1970s. In several ballets he choreographed, he has used kandyan dance movements and features. In some ways his popularity also helped to reduce the caste barriers surrounding the dance, and made it more palatable to an urban, contemporary audience. To date one of the largest school for Kandyan dance is Chitrasena Dance School. Traditional and ritual Kandyan dance is still taught in some village dance schools like Madyama Lanka Nritya Mandalaya, Tittapajjala kalayatanaya in Kandy area. From about the 1920s, artists such as George Keyt, Harold Peiris, Lionel Wendt and John de Silva also helped to popularise the dance form with their support of contemporary masters such as Amunugama Suramba, Ukkuwa, Gunaya, Punchi Gura and Sri Jayana.[1] Others include A.H.E Molamure, Dr. Pani Bharatha and Ven. Rambukwelle Siddhartha. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country.
