Marko Antun De Dominis Vs. Faust Vrančić: Od Logike (1608) Do Nove Logike (1616)

The Idea of Pan-Slavic Ethnolinguistic Kinship and Reciprocity in Dalmatia and Croatia, 1477–1683
ISSN 2029-0225 (spausdintas), ISSN 2335-7185 (internetinis) http://dx.doi.org/10.7220/2335-7185.15.7 THE IDEA OF PAN-SLAVIC ETHNOLINGUISTIC KINSHIP AND RECIPROCITY IN DALMATIA AND CROATIA, 1477–1683 ASSOC. PROF. DR. VLADISLAV B. SOTIROVIĆ Mykolas Romeris University Faculty of Politics and Management Political Science Institute Email: [email protected] [email protected] This paper, as the main research task, sets out to examine and clarify historical deve- lopment of the ideological concept of Pan-Slavism, which was created by the writers of Dalmatia and Croatia at the time of the late Renaissance and early Baroque (from the end of the 15th century to the end of the 17th century). The literary works of that time by many of Dalmatia’s and Croatia’s writers deal with the ethnolinguistic aspect of Pan- Slavic unity, solidarity, kinship and reciprocity. Their writings established an ideologi- cal framework for making both Pan-Slavic common national identity and program of the united single national state of the South Slavs in the Balkans. This “ethnolinguistic” framework of Pan-Slavic, and especially South Slavic, national identity became in the 19th and the 20th centuries the cornerstone of national ideology of Yugoslavism and Pan-Slavism which ultimately led to the creation of Yugoslavia in 1918 and its recrea- tion in 1945. The main aspect of the ideology of Pan-Slavism and Yugoslavism that was developed in the literature and historical writings in Dalmatia and Croatia from 1477 to 1683 was based on the old domestic thought and tradition that all Slavs originated in the Balkans and that the South Slavs are autochthonous inhabitants of this peninsula. -

Otkriće Marcusa Popplowa Kad se sredinom 1990-ih Marcus Popplow usredotočio na proučavanje odnosa između povlastica dodijeljenih za tehničke izume i objelodanjenih teh- ničkih ‘slikovnica’, koje pripadaju kasnorenesansnom žanru theatrum machina- rum, njegovo je istraživanje urodilo važnim otkrićem: »Već 1595. godine dobio je on [= Faust Vrančić] venecijansku povlasticu (sl. 4) za ‘naprave odnosno strojeve za mljevenje, drobljenje itd.’, ‘koji se pokreću s pomoću vode, vjetra, teglećih životinja i čovjeka mnogo lakše nego obično i stoga donose veliku uštedu’.86«1 Pritom je njemački povjesničar tehnike objelodanio faksimil odluke Senata Mletačke Republike i u bilješci transkribirao samo onaj dio povlastice koji 1 Marcus Popplow, »Erfindungsschutz und Maschinenbücher: Etappen der Institutionalisie- rung technischen Wandels in der frühen Neuzeit«, Technikgeschichte 63/1 (1996), pp. 21–46, u poglavlju »Autoren von Maschinenbüchern als Empfänger von Erfinderprivilegien«, pp. 33–38, na pp. 35–37, na p. 37: »Bereits 1595 hatte er [= Fausto Veranzio] ein venezianischer Privileg (Abb. 4) für ‘Vor- richtungen bzw. Sweden and the Question of Poland's Independence (1914
FOLIA SCANDINAV1CA VOL 1 POZNAŃ 1992 SWEDEN AND THE QUESTION OF POLAND’S INDEPENDENCE (1914-1918) B e r n a r d P io t r o w sk i A b s t r a c t . The author claims that the question of Poland’s independence was of great political interest to the Swedes of World War I, especially to Swedish activists who collaborated with Germany. The Polish question was seen in the wider context of aspiration of the Baltic “oppressed peoples”. A number of eminent Swedes openiy demanded that the right to inde pendent state existence be granted to Poland. The author also discusses the role of various organizations (e.g. the League of Peoples Oppressed by Rus sia and Information Office “Polonia”) active in Stockholm at that time. Events of World War I, total in their character, should be con sidered from two perspectives, that of the tragic turmoil of military operations and that of mass propaganda of states involved in the war and those of the Entente. Effective actions of the propaganda machine taken by these military blocs were especially directed at two neutral states, Switzerland and Sweden. During World War: I, Scandinavian states, including Sweden, maintained strict neutrality. This was confirmed by north- European monarchs at a meeting in Malmö in December 1914. Both H. Hammarskjöld, the Swedish prime minister, and K.A. Wallenberg, the minister of foreign affairs, sought permanent and good contacts with Germany, the main recipient of Swedish iron ore and, a supplier of coal and food to Sweden.1 Various contacts with the ¡ Reich of Wilhelm were primarily favoured by the so-called Swedish activists, descending from conservative and peasant groups, from classes of great capital, wealthy farmers, officers’ corps and academic intellectuals of Lund, Uppsala and Stockholm, and partly from journalists, writers and artists. -
Marijana Borić: “Faust Vrančić: 400 Years After the Publication of His Work Machinae Novae”
Croatian Studies Review 12 (2016) Marijana Borić: “Faust Vrančić: 400 years after the publication of his work Machinae novae” Marijana Borić Department for History of Sciences Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Zagreb [email protected] Abstract Faust Vrančić (Šibenik 1551 - Venice 1617) was one of the most versatile Croatian humanists-polymaths who, with his scientific, intellectual and diplomatic-political activities during the transition from the 16th to the 17th century, left an indelible trace not only in Croatian but also European science and culture. Since his opus includes philosophical, linguistic, historical, hagiographical and natural scientific works in Latin and Croatian, he is the subject of research of a wide circle of experts from various scientific disciplines. This article presents, from several aspects, Vrančić’s most famous work, the techn(olog)ical manual Machinae novae and examines, in a scholarly manner, his importance for the development of technology and contribution to the European intellectual culture of that period. The article also explains Vrančić’s education and coming of age into one of the foremost techn(olog)ical writers of that period and analyses the most important characteristics of the structure and contents of Machinae novae through which Vrančić acquired worldwide fame. The methodology and content of the work is compared with the Western Renaissance scientific/scholarly and techn(olog)ical tradition. Key words: Faust Vrančić, Croatian scientific heritage, Renaissance, history of technology, inventions 45 Croatian Studies Review 12 (2016) Introduction The 400th anniversary of the publication of the book Machinae novae Fausti Veranti Siceni cum declaratione Latina, Italica, Hispanica, Galica et Germanica (Venice, 1615/1616), one of the capital works of Renaissance technology and the first techn(olog)ical manual written in territory of modern-day Croatia, is an opportunity to discuss the importance of this work and its author.
