Tasmanian Tertiary Foraminifera
Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania, Volume 108 (ms. received 16.3.1973) TASMANIAN TERTIARY FORAMINIFERA Part 1. Textulariina, Miliolina, Nodosariacea by Patrick G. Quilty West Australian Petroleum Pty. Limited, Perth, W.A. (with four plates) ABSTRACT Foraminifera of the Suborders Textulariina and Miliolina and the Superfamily Nodosariacea are recorded from samples of all known Tasmanian marine Oligo-Miocene sections. Thirteen species of agglutinated foraminifera are identified specifically and one category is left in open nomenclature. Thirty species of porcellanous foraminifera (including CrenuZostomina banksi n. gen., n. sp.) are recorded and there are eight open categories. The Nodosariacea is represented by 63 identified species (including Lagena tasmaniae n. sp.) and 10 categories in open nomenclature. Information on each species includes original citation, synonymy of Australian identifications, remarks where necessary and occurrence and age in Tasmania. All identified forms are figured. INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The stratigraphy of the Tasmanian Tertiary Marine succession has been reviewed by Quilty (1972). The results noted in that paper are based on foraminiferal studies conducted at the University of Tasmania. Localities, sample numbers etc., mentioned here are detailed further in Quilty (op. cit.) and this paper should be read in company with that paper. This paper is the first of a projected series of three papers documenting the Tasmanian Tertiary foraminifera. Classification adopted in these papers follows closely that proposed by Loeblich and Tappan (1964a) and reviewed by them (1964b) but differs in minor respects which will be indicated where necessary. Quilty (op. cit.) noted that the first record of Tasmanian Tertiary foraminifera was by Goddard and Jensen (1907). -

M. 1Department of Applied Geology and 2Department of Geology University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai 600 025, India Abstract: The Arabian Sea is one of the most productive regions of the world ocean and hence has been the focus of attention of micropaleontologists from all over the world. A 5.4-m gravity core was retrieved onboard the CRV Sagar Kanya from off Goa, Arabian Sea, and its uppermost 50 cm examined for foraminifers. The systematic paleontology of textulariid and miliolid foraminifera from this core segment is presented with relevant remarks and comments on their ecology and distribution. Introduction: The seasonal reversal of the winds caused by the alternate heating and cooling of the Tibet Plateau controls the circulation in the Arabian Sea. It has, therefore, been extensively studied with respect to diverse aspects of both benthic and planktic foraminifers. Between June and September (summer), offshore Ekman transport and intense upwelling along the Oman and Somalia margins (Shi et al., 2000) are caused by the strong south-westerly winds that blow across the Arabian Sea. This upwelling process brings cold, nutrient-rich waters from a few hundred meters depth to the surface and considerably increases the biological productivity in the euphotic zone, making the Arabian Sea one of the most productive regions of the world ocean (Qasim, 1977). -

AKINCI Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Roma, Italy (Received July 2, 2001; accepted December 21, 2001) Abstract - The 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake (Mw.=.7.4, USGS) occurred in the western part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone about 80 km east of Istanbul. The mechanism of the main event was almost a pure right-lateral strike- slip, and the aftershock distribution indicates that the rupture was located toward the western end of the North Anatolian Fault Zone. The earthquake affected a wide area in the Marmara region, as well as the city of Istanbul. Most of the damage and fatalities occurred in towns located on the narrow, flat shoreline of the Sea of Marmara. Since the broken fault segment traversed the densely populated and industrialized east Marmara region, damage was enormously high. Widespread liquefactions caused bearing capacity losses and consequent foundation failu- res in the Adapazari region, as well as extensive subsidence along the shoreline in Gölcük (Gulf of Izmit) and Sapanca. The earthquake struck also the western suburbs of Istanbul, the Avcilar region, causing severe damage on buildings even though the distance from the epicenter was about 80 km. In this study, we discuss the ground motion characteristics, as well as directivity and soil effects of recorded ground acceleration of the Kocaeli earthquake. Strong-motion data were obtained from the networks managed by the Bogaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute and by the General Director of Disaster Affairs, Earthquake Research Department. -
