AKINCI Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Roma, Italy (Received July 2, 2001; accepted December 21, 2001) Abstract - The 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake (Mw.=.7.4, USGS) occurred in the western part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone about 80 km east of Istanbul. The mechanism of the main event was almost a pure right-lateral strike- slip, and the aftershock distribution indicates that the rupture was located toward the western end of the North Anatolian Fault Zone. The earthquake affected a wide area in the Marmara region, as well as the city of Istanbul. Most of the damage and fatalities occurred in towns located on the narrow, flat shoreline of the Sea of Marmara. Since the broken fault segment traversed the densely populated and industrialized east Marmara region, damage was enormously high. Widespread liquefactions caused bearing capacity losses and consequent foundation failu- res in the Adapazari region, as well as extensive subsidence along the shoreline in Gölcük (Gulf of Izmit) and Sapanca. The earthquake struck also the western suburbs of Istanbul, the Avcilar region, causing severe damage on buildings even though the distance from the epicenter was about 80 km. In this study, we discuss the ground motion characteristics, as well as directivity and soil effects of recorded ground acceleration of the Kocaeli earthquake. Strong-motion data were obtained from the networks managed by the Bogaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute and by the General Director of Disaster Affairs, Earthquake Research Department. -

Newman1 Received 18 January 2005; revised 14 December 2005; accepted 27 December 2005; published 25 April 2006. [1] The catastrophic rupture of the North Anatolian Fault east of the Marmara Sea on 17 August 1999 highlighted a need for mapping the underwater extension of that continental transform. A new bathymetric map of Izmit Gulf indicates that the fault follows the axis of the gulf with a few minor bends. Submerged shorelines and shelf breaks that formed during the Last Glacial Maximum provide markers to quantify vertical deformation. Variable tilting of these horizons reveals that vertical deformation is highest just south of the fault. A correlation between vertical deformation of the southern fault block and distance to fault bends can be accounted for by a fault dipping steeply to the south. Hence subsidence (uplift) of the southern, hanging wall block would be expected where the fault strikes at a slightly transtensional (transpressional) orientation to relative plate motion. Subsidence reaches about 8 mm/yr west of the town of Golcuk and might be accommodated in 1–2 m subsidence events during large earthquakes. -

For centuries, inhabitants of coastal areas have suffered from the effects of tsunamis. Turkey, with a coastline of 8333 km, has experienced many tsunamis. Historical records reveal that, during the observation period over 3000 years, the coastal and surrounding areas of Turkey have been affected by more than ninety tsunamis. These tended to cluster around the Marmara Sea, the city of Istanbul and the gulfs of Izmit, Izmir, Fethiye and Iskenderun. Each of the tsunami occurrences surveyed in this paper deserves further individual study. The most extensive available information concerns the tsunamis associated with the Istanbul Earthquakes of 1509 and 1894, the Eastern Mar- mara Earthquake in 1963 and that of Izmit in 1999, which disturbed the Marmara Sea; the Earthquake of 1939 in Erzincan in eastern Anatolia; and the 1968 Bartın Earthquake, which affected Fatsa and Amasra on the Black Sea. -

Data Related to Natural Conditions 6.1.1. Topography (1) Topographic Map a. Maps Large-scale topographic data was necessary for the Study as basic data for the GIS database. This data was also necessary for the evaluation of slope stability. 1:1,000 scale paper maps and their corresponding 3D digital CAD files were created in Microstation format and then aggregated to 1:5,000 scale maps (472 sheets) by the Directorate of Photogrammetry, IMM in 1995 and 1997. Features are categorised into 62 levels. These series of maps cover the entire IMM jurisdiction area except Adalar District. Another series of maps compiled in 1987 covers the Adalar District. This series consists of 1:1,000 scale paper maps and their corresponding digital CAD files. İSKİ’s 1:50,000 maps, are used for areas outside of those covered in the IMM maps. Table 6.1.1 shows the topographic maps used by the Study Team. Their area covered by these maps is shown in Figure 6.1.1.
