H-Urban CFP: 'Urban Leisure, History and Heritage' (Sport and Leisure History Network Symposium) Discussion published by Dion Georgiou on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 BSSH North East and Yorkshire Sport and Leisure History Network Symposium Call for Papers: Urban Leisure, History and Heritage Teesside University, Middlesbrough Saturday, 14 November 2015 The British Society of Sports History North East and Yorkshire Network invites submissions for the Urban Leisure, History and Heritage Symposium, to take place at Teesside University, Middlesbrough on Saturday, 14 November 2015. The newly established regional network’s inaugural symposium seeks to explore the connections and interactions between the urban environment, leisure history and sports heritage. Middlesbrough has a rich sporting heritage intertwined with the emergence of the area as a Victorian ‘boom town’ centred upon iron and steel manufacturing. In recent decades the town has embraced its sporting heritage through developments including a sculpture trail on the former site of Ayresome Park, erection of the Brian Clough Memorial Statue, the historic Tees Transporter Bridge emerging as a leading hub for extreme sports, and the construction of a multimillion pound Sports Village. Papers are welcomed on themes including (but not limited to): • The role of leisure in shaping urban identities, interactions and space • Lost spaces and places of leisure • Industrial heritage, regeneration and sport • Sporting memories and memorialisation in the city • Archives, museums and urban leisure heritage Submissions from postgraduates, early career researchers, community historians and museum and heritage practitioners are particularly welcomed. Abstracts no longer than 500 words should be sent to [email protected] and [email protected] by Friday, 2 October 2015. Citation: Dion Georgiou.
