Truss bridges are one of the oldest types of modern bridges. The basic types of truss bridges shown in this article have simple designs which could be easily analyzed by nineteenth and early twentieth century engineers. Stephen James Abstract The dramatic expansion of the iron industry in Cleveland from 1850 propelled the district briefly to the position of the world’s largest iron-producing centre and brought about the formation of a major industrial cluster in a previously unindustrialised area. By the end of the 1870s, however, its prosperity was threatened by developments in steel-production technology and the growth of iron and steel output in the US and Germany. -

Stillwater Lift Bridge Management Plan Mn/DOT Bridge 4654 Report prepared for Minnesota Department of Transportation Report prepared by www.meadhunt.com and March 2009 Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) Historic Bridge Management Plan Bridge Number: 4654 Executive Summary The Stillwater Lift Bridge (Bridge No. 4654), completed in 1931, is a 10-span, two-lane highway crossing of the St. Croix River, between Stillwater, Minnesota, on the west and Houlton, Wisconsin, on the east. It is owned by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT). The bridge currently carries Minnesota Trunk Highway (TH) 36 and Wisconsin State Trunk Highway (STH) 64, in addition to pedestrian traffic. The bridge includes a counterweighted, tower-and-cable, vertical-lift span of the Waddell and Harrington type. The total structure length is about 1,050 feet. The bridge has seven, 140- foot, steel, riveted, Parker truss spans, including the vertical lift span. There are two reinforced-concrete approach spans on the west and a rolled-beam jump span on the east. At the west approach to the bridge is a reinforced-concrete circular concourse, about 94 feet in diameter, designed with Classical Revival architectural treatment. The concourse is integrated with the west approach spans in materials and design, including a continuous, open-balustrade railing. The bridge, including the concourse, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places (National Register). The concourse is included in the Stillwater Commercial Historic District (also listed in the National Register). The bridge and concourse are within the Stillwater Cultural Landscape District (determined eligible for the National Register). -

Corporate Ownership & Control / Volume 1, Issue 1, Fall 2003 CORPORATE BOARDS AND INCENTIVES: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM THE UK IN 1935 Marianne Pitts, Graham V. Sadler & Martin J. Conyon** Abstract We investigate boardroom governance using UK historical data for 1935. We demonstrate that there is a negative relationship between risk and incentives in this year. Prior research has produced anomalous results (Prendergast, 2002). Second, we show that average (median) board ownership of ordinary shares is about 7.95% (2.88%). Heuristically this figure is less than previously reported estimates for the US also using 1935 data. Finally, we show the phe- nomenon of multiple board membership. UK directors in 1935 hold many directorships – sometimes exceeding 10 concurrent memberships. Keywords: board membership, board ownership, board incentives 1. Introduction We investigate boardroom corporate governance using UK historical data for 1935. Relatively little is known about the structure of UK boards or the ownership of stock by board members at this time.1 Our contribution to the corporate governance literature is three-fold. First, we test for the existence of a negative association between incentives and risk. Principal-agent theory predicts that equilibrium risk and incentives are negatively correlated. However, empirical studies have often failed to detect this hypothesised relationship (Pren- dergast, 2002, page 1077). We isolate a robust negative relationship in our data set. We find that managerial ownership (incentives) and the volatility of returns (risk) are inversely related (demonstrated using OLS and quantile regression procedures). Second, we provide historical evidence on UK boardroom ownership in 1935. We find aggregate director ownership of ordinary equity shares on UK corporate boards in 1935 is about 7.95% of the total issued equity of their company. -

Historic Environment Audit for the S&DR 1830 Branch Line to Middlesbrough On behalf of Middlesbrough Council April 2018 The Stockton & Darlington Railway – Middlesbrough Branch Line Historic Environment Audit The Stockton & Darlington Railway – Middlesbrough Branch Line Historic Environment Audit Summary This report commissioned by Middlesbrough Council takes forward one of the recommendations from the S&DR Heritage Audit prepared in 2016 on behalf of the County Durham, Stockton and Darlington authorities to extend the project along the S&DR branch lines which dated between 1825 and 1830. The audit is designed to pull together key and core information to inform future development work along the route of the 1830 Middlesbrough branch line. The report also includes recommendations for heritage led regeneration along the 1830 corridor and the site of the world’s first planned railway town at St. Hilda’s; this includes enhanced access with interpretation along the 1830 route and distinctive high quality residential uses on the site of the planned new town and new sustainable uses for the surviving new town buildings such as the Old Town Hall, The former Ship Inn and the Captain Cook inn.
