Department of Special Collections and University Archives, Stanford University Libraries, Stanford, Calif. Biographical/Historical Sketch Wayne S. Vucinich joined the Stanford faculty in the Department of History in 1946, teaching courses on Western civilization and Russian and East European history until 1988. He earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in Slavic languages and history at the University of California-Berkeley. After graduating in 1941 he joined the Office of Strategic Services and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. Vucinich's many publications include Serbia Between East and West (1954), The Ottoman Empire: Its Record and Legacy (1965), The Peasant in 19th-Century Russia (1968), Contemporary Yugoslavia (1969), Russia and Asia (1972) and Eastern Europe (1973). He died on April 21, 2005. Description of the Collection Vucinich's papers were received in four accessions. The first accession consists primarily of typescript drafts of Vucinich's research, largely on the history of Yugoslavia and of Serbs in California. Most of the typescripts were done between 1977 and 1988, after which they were done on computers and are not dated. There is an occasional page in longhand, clipping, or other printed source material. Reprints of some of Vucinich's shorter works (1946-1995) are included. Of note are 5 questionnaires completed by Yugoslavs in California about their life in the old country and in the United States, 1977 and undated. There is no correspondence in this first accession. The second accession has two parts. Part 1 consists of typescript drafts of his research, with some source materials, on Bileca Rudine, Bosnia and Hercegovina, and the Bulgarian resistance during World War II, and includes Vucinich's correspondence during his time in the OSS, 1943-44. Part 2 pertains to the Joint Stanford-Yugoslav Trebisnjica Archeological Project (1967-69) and includes reports, sketches, maps, and photographs. The third and fourth accessions include biographical and career documents; further research and writing files on Bileca Rudine, Bosnia and Hercegovina, and the Bulgarian resistance during World War II; and additional sketches, maps, and photographs from the Stanford-Yugoslav Trebisnjica Archeological Project. Also included is an audio recording of a 1966 roundtable discussion on the collapse of Austria-Hungary. Guide to the Wayne S. • Byzantium's Balkan Frontier
This page intentionally left blank Byzantium’s Balkan Frontier is the first narrative history in English of the northern Balkans in the tenth to twelfth centuries. Where pre- vious histories have been concerned principally with the medieval history of distinct and autonomous Balkan nations, this study regards Byzantine political authority as a unifying factor in the various lands which formed the empire’s frontier in the north and west. It takes as its central concern Byzantine relations with all Slavic and non-Slavic peoples – including the Serbs, Croats, Bulgarians and Hungarians – in and beyond the Balkan Peninsula, and explores in detail imperial responses, first to the migrations of nomadic peoples, and subsequently to the expansion of Latin Christendom. It also examines the changing conception of the frontier in Byzantine thought and literature through the middle Byzantine period. is British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow, Keble College, Oxford BYZANTIUM’S BALKAN FRONTIER A Political Study of the Northern Balkans, – PAUL STEPHENSON British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow Keble College, Oxford The Pitt Building, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, United Kingdom The Edinburgh Building, Cambridge CB2 2RU, UK 40 West 20th Street, New York, NY 10011-4211, USA 477 Williamstown Road, Port Melbourne, VIC 3207, Australia Ruiz de Alarcón 13, 28014 Madrid, Spain Dock House, The Waterfront, Cape Town 8001, South Africa http://www.cambridge.org © Paul Stephenson 2004 First published in printed format 2000 ISBN 0-511-03402-4 eBook (Adobe Reader) ISBN 0-521-77017-3 hardback Contents List ofmaps and figurespagevi Prefacevii A note on citation and transliterationix List ofabbreviationsxi Introduction .Bulgaria and beyond:the Northern Balkans (c.–) .The Byzantine occupation ofBulgaria (–) .Northern nomads (–) .Southern Slavs (–) .The rise ofthe west,I:Normans and Crusaders (–) .

  • Serbian Medieval Towns and Their Tourist Potentials
Geographica Timisiensis, vol. 19, nr. 1, 2010 (pp. 189-196) ● SERBIAN MEDIEVAL TOWNS AND THEIR TOURIST POTENTIALS Rastislav STOJSAVLJEVIC, Miroslav VUJICIC, Bojan DJERCAN, Branislav DJURDJEV University of Novi Sad Abstract . Serbian medieval towns differed in the time and type of their formation. the time of Serbian medieval state, period that lasted almost 300 years, experiences the development and changes in society and thus in the towns as well. This work introduces main historical conditions for the formation of Serbian towns, their development and causes of their disappearance. However, they still have the possibility to revive themselves after many centuries but their function would not be a defending but a tourist one. This work presents their tourist potentials and compares them to an efficient tourist valorization that was carried out across Europe. The biggest problem is found in their poor conditions and lack of consciousness of Serbian cultural and historical heritage.

RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, INSTITUTE OF ECONOMICS “Thirty years after breakup of the SFRY: modern problems of relations between the republics of the former Yugoslavia” 15th independence anniversary of Montenegro: achievements and challenges Prof. dr Gordana Djurovic University of Monenegro 21 May 2021 1 An overview: from Doclea to the Kingdom of Montenegro (1) • During the Roman Empire, the territory of Montenegro was actually the territory of Duklja (DOCLEA). Doclea was originally the name of the Roman city on the site of modern Podgorica (Ribnica), built by Roman Emperor Diocletian, who hailed from this region of Roman Dalmatia. • With the arrival of the Slovenes in the 7th century, Christianity quickly gained primacy in this region. • Doclea (Duklja) gradually became a Principality (Knezevina - Arhontija) in the second part of the IX century. • The first known prince (knez-arhont) was Petar (971-990), (or Petrislav, according to Kingdom of Doclea by 1100, The Chronicle of the Priest of Dioclea or Duklja , Ljetopis popa Dukljanina, XIII century). In 1884 a during the rule of King Constantine Bodin lead stamp was found, on which was engraved in Greek "Petar prince of Doclea"; In that period, Doclea (Duklja) was a principality (Byzantine vassal), and Petar was a christianized Slav prince (before the beginning of the Slavic mission of Cirilo and Metodije in the second part of the IX century (V.Nikcevic, Crnogorski jezik, 1993). • VOJISLAVLJEVIĆ DYNASTY (971-1186) - The first ruler of the Duklja state was Duke Vladimir (990 – 1016.). His successor was duke Vojislav (1018-1043), who is considered the founder of Vojislavljević dynasty, the first Montenegrin dynasty.

  • The First Coronation Churches of Medieval Serbia
Jovanka Kalić* https://doi.org/10.2298/BALC1748007K UDC 94(497.11-89)"10/12" Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts Original scholarly work Belgrade http://www.balcanica.rs The First Coronation Churches of Medieval Serbia Abstract: The medieval ceremony of coronation as a rule took place in the most important church of a realm. The sites of the coronation of Serbian rulers before the establishment of the Žiča monastery church as the coronation church of Serbian kings in the first half of the thirteenth century have not been reliably identified so far. Based on the surviving me- dieval sources and the archaeological record, this paper provides background information about the titles of Serbian rulers prior to the creation of the Nemanjić state, and proposes that Stefan, son of the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty, was crowned king (1217) in the church of St Peter in Ras. Keywords: Serbia, corona regni, Stefan the First-Crowned, Sava of Serbia, Žiča monastery oronation sites of medieval monarchs hold an important place in the “cul- Ctural geography” of European nations. They are a major subject of every history because the rite of coronation sums up previous history and, as a rule, announces the one that lies ahead. The rite encompasses the totality of the cir- cumstances of a given community, political as well as religious, at that particular moment. In the context of such interrelatedness of phenomena, the coronation site carries multiple meanings. There is, of course, nothing random about it in a society based on the Christian view of the world and the monarch’s supreme au- thority.

  • Raška in Duklja (Srbija, Črna Gora)
RAŠKA IN DUKLJA (SRBIJA, ČRNA GORA) Po bizantinskem cesarju Konstantinu VII. Porfirogenetu obsegajo srbske dežele področja: - Raška (osrednja srbska pokrajina okoli Lima, zgornje Drine, Ibra in zahodne Morave), - Sol (okrog Tuzle), - Duklja (Skadarsko jezero, Zeta), - Travunija (primorje, od Boke Kotorske do Dubrovnika), - Zahumlje (od Neretve do Dubrovnika, porečje Neretve, Pelješac, Mljet), - Paganija (dan. Makarsko primorje do Splita, primorje med Neretvo in Cetino). Politično najbolj izoblikovane dežele so bile Raška, Duklja in Zahumlje.

Abstract A new genus and species of hydorbiid gastropod is described from a small karst spring at the right bank of Trebišnjica River in Gorica near Trebinje in Hercegovina. The taxon is clearly distinguished by the unique morphology of its male copulatory organ. Key words: Mollusca, new genus, new species, taxonomy, springs. Introduction Most of the hydrobiid genera and species can be reliably distinguished by the male copulatory organs (penis) morphology alone (Radoman 1983, Szarowska 2006, Glöer et al. 2010, Glöer and Pešić 2014, Georgiev and Glöer 2018). The senior author found a species in Hercegovina with a so far unknown penis shape. Due to unique penis shape the new species is described herein as a new genus. Materials and methods The studied material was obtained by sieving of the sandy sediments of Studenac and Vruljak 1 karstic springs in Gorica near Trebinje (Fig. 1) using microhabitat preference and sampling method according to Grego et al. (2017). The gastropods were sieved and sorted out from the sandy sediments, and fixed in 70–80 % ethanol. The live specimens were transfered to 80% analytical ethanol.
