  • Catalogue February 2014 UNDERSTANDING BORDEAUX
BORDEAUX SALE CATALOGUE FEBRUARY 2014 UNDERSTANDING BORDEAUX To start the journey of exploring Bordeaux, you need to fi rst start with the classifi cation system. In 1855, being lovers of red tape, the French ‘authorities’ created what became known as ‘The Classifi ed Growths of the Médoc ’. A fi ve-class classifi cation of 61 of the leading Médoc Châteaux (as well as two from Graves). This formalised lists that were already in place, based on each Châteaux relative quality as expressed by the prices of each individual estate. These growths, or ‘Crus’ range from fi rst (Premier) through to fi fth (Cinquièmes). Over the years that have passed since, there has been very little change to the 1855 classifi cation other than Château Mouton Rothschild moving from second growth to fi rst in 1973 - Baron Philippe de Rothschild reportedly saying “First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change”. Château Cantamerle was added as a fi fth growth in 1856 and Château Dubignon, a third growth, was absorbed into Château Malescot St Exupéry. Saint-Émilion added its own classifi cation system in 1955, which has subsequently been frequently amended. Pomerol has never been classifi ed, although the greatest wine from this region, Château Petrus, is generally spoken of in the same hushed tones as the fi ve fi rst growths of the Médoc . THE MÉDOC FIRST GROWTHS: • Château Lafi te-Rothschild (Pauillac) • Château Margaux (Margaux) • Château Latour (Pauillac) • Château Haut-Brion (Graves) • Château Mouton-Rothschild (Pauillac) Whilst much of the classifi cation system holds true today, the inherent problem with the system is that some of the Châteaux have improved out of sight since it was fi rst introduced, while oth- ers are considered to have rested on their laurels, smug in the knowledge that their wines will al- ways fetch high prices, as this was what the clas- sifi cation was based on in the fi rst place.

Château Giscours 2016 CSPC# 758854 750mlx12 13.2% alc./vol. Grape Variety 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot Appellation Margaux Classification Third Growth. Troisieme Grand Cru Classe in 1855. Website http://chateau-giscours.com/en/ General Info The first written reference to the domain of Giscours, a deed confirming the sale of the Estate for 1,000 Pounds, dates from 1330 and refers to a fortified keep. Records of Giscours' vineyards go back to 1552. Giscours early reputation for fine wine became increasingly apparent as time went on. A century later, Giscours charmed the palate of the "Roi Soleil" Louis the 14th, who is said to have had a particular inclination for the wine. Subsequent owners came and went. The most noteworthy was the Count de Pescatore, a leading Parisian banker. In 1847, he laid the cornerstone of the remarkable chateau that still exists today. It was built in order to receive Empress Eugénie in the Renaissance style to which she was accustomed. 1855 was another landmark year, in which the wine of Château Giscours was officially recognized as a 3rd growth Margaux. Then, the domain had a number of other owners and the estate was purchased by Nicolas Tari after the Second World War. He undertook a modernisation programme. In 1995, the Société Anonyme d'Exploitation was acquired by Eric Albada Jelgersma. He immediately began investing in vineyard and cellar renovation. He also put together a new winemaking team in the spirit of generations of winegrowers who made this Estate the famous great growth it is today. Giscours is run with brio by Dutch manager Alexander Van Beek.

Le Rosé de Giscours 2019 CSPC# 843938 750mlx6 13.0% alc./vol. Grape Variety 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot Appellation Margaux Classification Appellation Bordeaux Rosé Controlée Website http://chateau-giscours.com/ General Info Classified Third Cru in the 1855 classification, the exceptional quality of Château Giscours wines is still at the top of the Margaux appellation! Under the leadership of Alexander Van Beek, the cru continued its incredible rise, thanks in particular to significant progress in the vineyard and in the cellar. This rosé is also a great success from the estate! Bordeaux Rosé: In Gironde, only the regional Bordeaux appellation is available in rosé. Thus, it is possible to produce Bordeaux rosé and Bordeaux claret on the territory of the five hundred and three communes located in the geographical area of the department. Light red obtained by a weak maceration of red grapes, Claret is none other than the worthy descendant of French Claret, which, already in the Middle Ages, the English were fond of. Terre de Vin used the title of "War and Peace" to describe the 2018 vintage in Bordeaux so much the winegrowers feared the worst and obtained the best. In the end, we discover superb wines. Winemaker Lorenzo Pasquini Vintage The 2019 Margaux appellation on the whole shared much of the same growing conditions as experienced by the other appellations in the Medoc. The vintage in the Left Bank got off to a slow start with April, May and June having problems, due to a lack of sun and too much rain. Flowering began at the end of May.

COMMUNE: Lestiac Sur Garonne Château Giscours’ boasts a lengthy, rich history that can be traced back the 14th century. At that time the estate was merely a defensive tower which overlooked a wild, SIZE OF THE ESTATE (Hectares rather unwelcoming terrain. In 1552 Pierre de Lhomme, a wealthy Bordeaux draper, or Acres): 247 acres purchased a nobleman’s house called “Guyscoutz.” He revitalized the property and SOIL TYPE(S): Clay-gravel and converted it into a vast estate, planted vines, and soon after, wine production began. As the years passed, little by little, Pierre’s successors added their own contributions Clay-limestone to the estate.
