Catalogue February 2014 UNDERSTANDING BORDEAUX
BORDEAUX SALE CATALOGUE FEBRUARY 2014 UNDERSTANDING BORDEAUX To start the journey of exploring Bordeaux, you need to fi rst start with the classifi cation system. In 1855, being lovers of red tape, the French ‘authorities’ created what became known as ‘The Classifi ed Growths of the Médoc ’. A fi ve-class classifi cation of 61 of the leading Médoc Châteaux (as well as two from Graves). This formalised lists that were already in place, based on each Châteaux relative quality as expressed by the prices of each individual estate. These growths, or ‘Crus’ range from fi rst (Premier) through to fi fth (Cinquièmes). Over the years that have passed since, there has been very little change to the 1855 classifi cation other than Château Mouton Rothschild moving from second growth to fi rst in 1973 - Baron Philippe de Rothschild reportedly saying “First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change”. Château Cantamerle was added as a fi fth growth in 1856 and Château Dubignon, a third growth, was absorbed into Château Malescot St Exupéry. Saint-Émilion added its own classifi cation system in 1955, which has subsequently been frequently amended. Pomerol has never been classifi ed, although the greatest wine from this region, Château Petrus, is generally spoken of in the same hushed tones as the fi ve fi rst growths of the Médoc . THE MÉDOC FIRST GROWTHS: • Château Lafi te-Rothschild (Pauillac) • Château Margaux (Margaux) • Château Latour (Pauillac) • Château Haut-Brion (Graves) • Château Mouton-Rothschild (Pauillac) Whilst much of the classifi cation system holds true today, the inherent problem with the system is that some of the Châteaux have improved out of sight since it was fi rst introduced, while oth- ers are considered to have rested on their laurels, smug in the knowledge that their wines will al- ways fetch high prices, as this was what the clas- sifi cation was based on in the fi rst place. -

With more than 1,500 years of cultivation, it is hard to argue against the Musique et Vin festival by holding an auction for special bottles donated by winemakers this belief. However, to The Wine Forum, Burgundy is more than just pure, scholarly wine. To us, whom we will be visiting and splitting the proceeds equally between these two worthy causes. Burgundy represents all that we as a group stand for—that is, that fine wine is not a right, but a And what a tour we have lined up! We commence with a Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru tasting privilege. Speaking with the region’s very top winemakers, they resolutely believe they are merely the current custodians of cherished plots, and that their role is to make the best wines possible at the Château du Clos de Vougeot on the final night of the 2014 Musique et Vin Festival. This and pass on the vineyard in the best condition possible to the next generation. Working the soil fabled region hosts 9 Grand Cru vineyards, the most of any in Burgundy. -
New Stars of Burgundy Tasting
NEW STARS OF BURGUNDY A TASTING AT ROBERSON WINE THURSDAY JULY 17th 2008 NEW STARS OF BURGUNDY THE DOM AINES Domaine Roulot (Meursault): This is a domaine that has grown rapidly in stature over the past 20 years, although that is not to say that Roulot hasn’t long been considered to be one of Meursault’s very best domaines. Guy Roulot was the driving force behind the creation of the estate and married into the Coche family (of Coche-Dury fame), which brought him plenty of prime terroir.Today the domaine is run by his son Jean-Marc - undoubtedly one of Burgundy’s top white winemakers. Roulot is a domaine that believes in terroir, and they produce 7 cuvées from different vineyards around Meursault. Indeed, Guy was a pioneer in seperately bottling the village appellation climats known as ‘deuxième crus’, and the wine that we will taste tonight is one of the best examples of this – ‘Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir’. Domaine Leflaive (Puligny-Montrachet): Not many beacons of Burgundian winemaking shine brighter than Do- maine Leflaive – this estate is the doyen of Puligny-Montrachet, not to mention a leading pioneer and promoter of biodynamic viticulture. Today’s Leflaive is run by Anne-Claude Leflaive and Pierre Morey, who form a formidable team. Taking the mantle from Anne-Claude’s father Vincent Leflaive was always going to be a difficult task (he was one of Burgundy’s best loved figures), but the wines from this domaine have continued to improve over the last 15 years and they are undoubtedly befitting of an estate that owns vines in all of Puligny’s top climats. -

TAGS: Highlights (http://www.decanter.com/tag/highlights/) News Home (http://www.decanter.com/tag/news-home/) California (http://www.decanter.com/wine/wine-regions/california/) wine and balance This article first appeared in Decanter magazine’s January issue. Subscribe here (https://subscription.decanter.com/subscriptions/decanter-subscriptions/). This ‘balance’ thing is going to run and run in California. We’ve had wine writer Jon Bonné and his book on The New California. And we’ve had sommelier Rajat Parr and Co with their ‘In Pursuit of Balance’ campaign, which was so successful it has now disbanded after its final tasting in November in San Francisco. Why this success? Because it touched a raw nerve. And these balance advocates weren’t the first ones either. Cathy Corison has been practising balance at her Napa winery for nearly 30 years. Jim Clendenen at Au Bon Climat has been talking this language since the 1980s and is a bit miffed that the new flag-wavers are claiming the balance idea is all theirs, when he’s been banging the drum for 35 years. -
Catalog, Make This One of the Best Sales in Which I Have Been Involved in My 30 Year Career in the Wine Business
An Auction of Finest & Rarest Wines Saturday, April 8 at 9:00 am At the Chicago Athletic Association 12 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago Those bidding or sending inquiries should refer to this auction as Sale #0604 “MIA” March, 2006 Dear Client: In 2005 I began a partnership with long time auction experts Michael Davis and Paul Hart, forming Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. with a shared goal to create the best and most trusted venue in the United States for buying and selling fine and rare wine. We are deeply gratified by the response that we have received among collectors and restaurateurs worldwide. Here are some of the highlights of our first year: • $9.5 million of wine sold at auction • 97% of auction lots sold • Bids received from 36 states and 14 countries. • Our September 2005 auction broke the record for the largest wine auction ever held in Chicago, besting auctions held by Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Davis & Co.! We proceeded to shatter this record once again in November. 2006 promises to be even more exciting. Our first auction in January sold 96% of the lots offered totaling more than $2.1 million. The wines in our extraordinary April auction, as showcased in this catalog, make this one of the best sales in which I have been involved in my 30 year career in the wine business. Within these pages, you will find consignments of impeccable provenance from some of the most important collectors in the world. I hope that I will see you at the auction on April 8th. -

2016 Vintage Release
2016 VINTAGE RELEASE “If one shall sadly remember 2016 as a vintage of frost and low yields, we appreciate its results as intense, pure and long living wines.” THIBAULT JACQUET January 2018 INTRODUCTION Bonneau du Martray changed hands in January 2017, for only the fourth time in over twelve centuries... A majority stake in the domaine was purchased by American vineyard proprietor and businessman E. Stanley Kroenke. The 2016 vintage therefore marks the end of the highly successful tenure of Jean- Charles le Bault de la Morinière and the beginning of an exciting new era. Jean-Charles took over from his father Jean and 4 managed the domaine from 1994 to 2017. He wisely 5 replanted several plots of Pinot Noir (Corton Grand Cru) to Chardonnay (Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru), whilst bringing about a marked increase in the quality of the domaine’s red wine. Bonneau du Martray’s new manager, who has barely had a chance to get his feet under his desk, is Thibault Jacquet, previously of Laurent-Perrier in Asia. Thibaut is young, dynamic and imbued with the spirit of this great domaine. The Jacquet family are friends of the le Bault de la Morinières, making for an auspicious beginning and meaning that the handover has been achieved smoothly... no mean feat at a domaine with this weight of history. Armand de Maigret will assist Thibault Jacquet, supervising the domaine, alongside the other vineyard holdings of Stan Kroenke. These include the Californian estates Screaming Eagle, Jonata and The Hilt. Look out of your car’s right hand window and you Beaune in 1443.
