Hamm Spiceland Monthly Meeting was set off from Duck Creek Monthly Meeting and first held First Month 23, 1833. Friends settled in the area and began holding meetings in 1824. The meeting was originally called Sharon. The meetinghouse has always been located near the present site at the west edge of the town of Spiceland. When Spiceland Monthly Meeting was established, it consisted of members living on the east side of Blue River; those on the west side remained part of Duck Creek. Some Friends who lived near Knightstown were uncertain where their membership should be. In Fourth Month 1833 a committee reported that “Friends on the west side of Blue River wish to be considered members of Duck Creek, except Jehu Stewart and Barbnabas Springer, who have a choice of belonging to Spiceland.” In 1835 these “Friends in the lower settlement of Spiceland and Duck Creek preparatives request[ed] the privilege of holding a meeting for worhsip and a preparative.” The preparative was named Elm Grove and was established in First Month 1836, with its members attached to Spiceland Monthly Meeting. It was transferred to Raysville Monthly Meeting in 1870 and laid down in 1876, although a long-abandoned graveyard remains at the site. When Duck Creek Monthly Meeting was laid down in 1837, its members were attached to Spiceland until Duck Creek was reestablished in 1840. In that period, Spiceland laid down the preparative meeting at Fall Creek in Madison County and established another preparative meeting at Sommerton in Richland Township, Madison County. In 1839, “because of distance and difficulty of crossing high waters,” Sommerton Preparative Meeting was transferred to Back Creek Monthly Meeting in Grant County. Quaker Records: Spiceland Monthly Meeting Births and Deaths (Henry County) In 1841 a meeting for worship was set up in the town of Raysville. It became a preparative meeting in 1846 and was set off as a monthly meeting in 1857. Other preparative meetings under Spiceland included Dunreith (1867–1931) and Ogden (1875–1880). Spiceland was long considered a major Quaker community. The Spiceland Academy attracted students from all over Indiana and the Midwest. An excellent history is Richard P. Ratliff’s The Quakers of Spiceland, Henry County, Indiana (1968). The volumes listed below are in the Yearly Meeting Archives in the Friends Collection at Earlham College. Those searched for this publication are indicated with an asterisk (*). They have been supplemented by inscriptions from tombstones in the cemeteries at Spiceland and Elm Grove.
