TODAY’S FOCUS: Today in God’s Word Jesus reveals himself as the Lord’s Anointed with the power and authority to call us to serve as his messengers. He calls us to fish for people. It is our privilege and responsibility to cast the gospel net and then joyfully sit back and watch as the Spirit brings in the catch.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

M: Let us pray.

Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON Isaiah 6:1-8 l NIV

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! SECOND LESSON Romans 10:12-17 l NIV

For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” 16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

M: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

M: Eternal God, you are holy and mighty, and great is the majesty of your glory. As you once cleansed the guilty lips of Isaiah and sent him forth to call your people to repentance and to speak hope in your name, cleanse us and send us forth with your Word, that many may hear and believe. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

M: Glorious Father, in your great mercy you sent forth your Son to atone for the sins of the whole world, and he established a Church by his blood. Renew your Church and strengthen the resolve of your people in difficult and dangerous times, that they may be faithful in every circumstance. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

M: O merciful Lord, you have called pastors and missionaries to fish for people by proclaiming the whole counsel of your Word. Guard them in their task, and give them courage and zeal. Bless us through their faithful preaching of your law and gospel, that we may be set free through forgiveness to serve you with our whole heart, mind, body and strength. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

M: Almighty God, all things are yours and all authority has its source in you. Bless us with good leaders in government and enable us to be good citizens, both working together for the common good of all people. Bring your peace to places where war, violence and terrorism threaten, and protect those who defend us. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

M: Loving God, as your Son bestowed the healing gifts of your grace, so bestow upon the sick, the suffering, the wounded in spirit and the dying the fullness of your grace (especially …). Give to the suffering relief and the sick healing, according to your will, and give them patience under the burden of their afflictions until that day when we shall no more be troubled by the weakness of flesh and shall see our bodies made new as Christ’s own glorious flesh in the resurrection of the dead. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.
